I just saw a segment on my local news station that said their are concerns over listeria contamination in the hard boiled eggs that are sold in the supermarket. I didn’t get any specific brands, but I know some of you use them on occasion so you might want to check it out.

Thanks for the egg tip. I use Egglands Best and another brand on occasion. I almost bought a bag today. I’ll have to a Google it and find out the brands.

DH also uses Egglands Best hard boiled eggs. Guess I'd better google it for him although if true he'll freak.

The CDC released a nationwide alert this week. The product has not been recalled. Almark Foods hard-boiled eggs sold directly to consumers and those hard-boiled at stores or restaurants are not included in the alert.
"It's important to note that the product in question was shipped to food service distributors, restaurants and other wholesale outlets and does not involve eggs in packages on shelves for consumer purchase at retail stores," Almark said in a statement to CNN.

I checked and the brand is Almark Brands. The eggs in question were sold to restaurants and food service outlets. The ones sold in stores to consumers were okay. I’ve never heard of that brand. It’s a GA company.

I grew up in a town of 500 people. There were two other girls in my grade who lived on the same street. We went through school together. Got married within a year or two of each other. One stayed put; one ended up in Alaska (of all places), and I ended up in Baltimore. Christmas cards/letters only once we were adults. Well, I got a fairly shocking Christmas letter from the one who stayed put. Her husband of 46 years left the house after his affair was revealed. Didn't move out. His stuff is still there (although neighbors have seen him enter the basement; boy, I'd be changing the locks yesterday). She doesn't know where he is. She's having trouble getting him into court. The children have all taken her side. What a sad Christmas story!

Maryanne, wow! That’s a sad story for sure. I’m with you about the locks. I’d have changed them the day he disappeared. Hard to believe that in a town that small no one knows where he is.

I’d check the girlfriend’s house if I cared enough to look for him. Good riddance to bad rubbish. And I’m with you on changing the locks. Wow, what a betrayal after all those years.

The news tonight expanded on the story about eggs. They said the reason there is no recall is because the CDC has no authority to do so. That would have to come from the FDA and supposedly they are considering issuing one, whatever that means. Our news outlet indicated that the CDC was warning against all precooked, packaged hard boiled eggs, not just the Almarck brand. It doesn’t affect me since I boil my own eggs when I need them. I’m just passing on the info because I’d hate for any of you to get listeria. There have been some deaths due to contaminated eggs recently, so it can be pretty serious.

Maryanne--What a sad story. Yes, the locks need to be changed. Call it a Christmas gift to herself!

I haven't figured out buying hard boiled eggs. I use an egg cooker that makes perfect hard boiled eggs with no damage when the shell is peeled off. That is one of the few non-lazy things I do.

I just started a new and different spreadsheet for getting back on track after the holidays. It's time! Well, if you asked my cardiologist, I'm sure she'd say it's past time!!

I've started getting back in the habit of buying and having handy raw veggies. Baby steps!

She says rumor has it he's moved on to yet another person.

In the last several years, they bought a retirement home in one of those neighborhoods where they do your yard work for you, the houses are one story, etc. (Although apparently they have basements, LOL!)

Based on your info, I’ll hold off on the pre-Packaged boiled eggs.

I’d check the bank accounts ASAP to be sure he hadn’t cleaned them out. Next step would be talk to a lawyer to find out what steps she needs to take to protect herself. That’s sad that she has to deal with this at Christmas, when the family should be having loving get together. Her husband is a skunk.

She's got a lawyer. He's got a lawyer. Apparently it's hard to get him in court for which he's gotten a scolding from a judge (I'm not clear on whether that was in person or through his lawyer).

I’m exhausted but happy with what I’ve accomplished. In the past 3 days I’ve made 3 different kinds of candy, a large batch of chocolate chip cookies, a smaller batch of decorated sugar cookies, and a large batch of cinnamon rolls. My house is a mess, but at least most of my baking is done! I’d still like to make a couple more different types of cookies, but that will depend on how I’m feeling tomorrow or Sunday.

I got some sad news about a dear friend this week. She’s been complaining of hip pain for several months and the last time I saw her about 2 weeks ago she was limping badly and in obvious pain. A CT scan this week revealed a mass in her lower abdomen near her hipbone and several lesions on her lungs. None of this was present on a CT scan she had in September, so whatever this is, it’s very aggressive. In addition, they found several pelvic fractures. She was treated 20 years ago with radiation for colon cancer and the oncologist thinks this may be a consequence of the radiation. They are still evaluating and testing and working out a treatment plan at this point, but she was told not to travel and that she will likely begin chemo by the first of the year. They had planned to leave Sunday to visit their son and grandchildren in Chicago, but are now having to cancel those plans.

On the plus side, my cousin who has had 2 brain surgeries this year got some good news this week. His recovery from his last surgery has been much more difficult than the first, and he’s recently been having a lot of weird symptoms that apparently were caused by one of his medications working too well. They will be discontinuing that one and starting a new one and expect many of the symptoms he has been experiencing to abate. And best of all, they found no evidence of any cancer recurrence.

Pam, you got an amazing amount of baking done.
I’m so sorry about your friend’s cancer. Her oncologist is probably right that the recurrence was caused by radiation treatment. That happened to a friend years ago. He survived cancer for many years and then died from leukemia which was caused by radiation treatments. I think modern techniques deliver a smaller, targeted dose of radiation. That’s wonderful news about your cousin though

Okay, here's a photo of a life size pony my third grade class made. It was apparently unearthed in the school basement a few years back and has been used for proms and plays and who knows what, after a little refurbishing. My mother liked to tell the story of how I was too prissy to participate in the paper mache (sp?).

Pam--So sorry about your friend. It is often true that the "cure" can also create problems. You did an amazing job of baking. I would never have that much energy.

Maryanne--That pony has had an extended life span with its use for multiple activities.

I discovered something on QVC that I might do for a month. Basically, it is dinner and snacks for two for two weeks (weekends off) or can be a full month for one. Breakfasts and lunches are so easy so this might work as I like most of them:

That horse held up well, considering it’s age. You must have been surprised to see it after so many years.

I have no memory of it being made. I do remember my mother telling the story.

Let’s hope we don’t look like after holiday kitty in January. So far, I’m maintaining my pre-holiday weight. I’ll consider myself successful if I don’t gain over Christmas week.

I continue to slog through CROM end of year paperwork. If I'm never heard from again, you'll know I drowned in it.
