Well PAV you’re at “that” age when vision often deteriorates. You know bifocals or trifocals? I prefer progressives without the lines myself. And there’s always the onset of cataracts….. cataract surgery totally improved my vision dramatically. I had it done fairly young. I chose near vision fix and use glasses for distance. The upside is my vision has been static for 15 years.
But if you can get by with glasses for now it’s preferable to lasers.

Have been using progressive for more than 10 years now thank you actually for the near vision. Fix idea for cataracts. I do hope I remember it when the time comes because to me it sounds like the smarter move now that I think about it

Saw the guy. He was a laser surgery specialist so not that interested in my case. Threw me back in the water as generally normal. And suggested that there may be still mismatching between correct prescription and lenses hinting broadly to go the expensive route and buy from the optometrist,... Something I've steadfastly avoided to date

Very good that you went to see an opthamalogist I'm thinking? Keep an eye on the retinas will be my new mantra. I had no idea mine was shredded until it decided to let go.

Dude said all good except maybe high normal eye pressure but it was only the puff test and nobody has ever said anything about it before so maybe I'll keep an eye haha on that. But basically shrugged and said get lost. Go get them measured (and made) by somebody who cares 🤔 + presumably because they're sufficiently incentivized😎

I hate when supposed medical professionals try to UPsell you to unnecessary/unwanted services that merely give them extra income. I had a dentist that wanted to do tooth bleaching or a set of veneers- yeah I drink a lot of black coffee but toothpaste handles that pretty well. Actually my current dentist comments on how white my teeth are considering my age.

So had my doctor's appointment yesterday and I think it went well. My doctor took my concerns very seriously and we are doing to investigate a few different things. So I gave them a bunch of my blood yesterday (more then I have ever had) and I have referrals to a Neurologist and to Sleep Medicine. She also wants me to try and start watching what I eat and doing light exercise as I can with the fatigue.

It was nice because while she did mention me being so heavy and out of shape could be contributing, she didn't just dismiss my symptoms as being from that. Right now her working theory is Post Covid Chronic Fatigue (since everything started to get bad right after I had Covid last year), but we want to investigate all possibilities just to be safe.

Curious! Do your order your glasses online? Is that his concern? (I do - most optometrists are not keen on that).

    Nope.

Was making glasses at Costco but switched to Superstore because they didn't have PAV break resistant frames and balked at warranty repairs.

(Yes, Costco was balking at warranty repairs and I had to push the issue last time as to whether the coverage timeline was from order date or delivery date)

I do high index excilor progressives (transitions) or the equivalent Costco freedom label.

Was very happy with service at small town Alberta Superstore. Advice on frames (flexible to not break but rigid enough for the progressive prospect to work), careful measurements, buying with both bcaa discount and 40% in points which was bringing the total to within Costco price.

Did last set in Vancouver area. Had to fight points issue. Had to correct, twice, which lenses were getting ordered. Prescription was unusable when it arrived.

Got it checked out at the other nice people store in Alberta. Pupillary distance was incorrect, especially the location of the middle. And she thought the frame was not going to work out for me.

She did accounting magic to both redo the prescription and change the frame and not lose the points 🤣

Took careful measurements. Placed the order for pickup in Vancouver. Picked it up 2 weeks later and.... it was still unusable.

Gave up and went back to using old frames and prescriptions.

"I do lasers" dude on Monday implied that there may be an issue with the prism, but he does lasers not glasses 🤓, so "go see a guy who has more steak on the fire to make sure you get the right thing...." Well either stake or steak but I think the whoosh sound is the same! 🤷‍♂️

Ugg on the *kitten* off department!

The white oxo scale, two batteries, that I bought ages ago went from I used it last night to will not turn on today. Batteries checked everything checked

The newer black oxo scale with four batteries but otherwise pretending to be the same model is not in daily use because basically the auto shut off has never worked. So you have to manually shut it off. Otherwise it just stays on all day till the batteries drain. In fact, it's the one I have in the car and which I used for the McDonald's cone sampling this summer

The Taylor glass one of course is still as difficult as ever to clean and and the touch display as difficult as ever to get to work.

To buy another OXO one and hope that auto shut off works or not to buy?

Sounds like you’ve found a good doctor Athijade! I’ve experienced the kinds of doctors who blamed everything and anything on my weight. So discouraging when you know something is wrong and the doctor dismisses it. I hope you get the answers and help you need.

Wow Mr. PAV - three scales. I vote for getting a new one. Start fresh but read the specs to get what you need. I think mine came from Walmart. No name brand but has auto shut off and has worked just fine for four years now on the same batteries.

I’m off to see the orthopedist today. It’s been a week since I injured my wrist. Still aches like hell with impressive bruising. Hoping I’ll definitively find out if it’s possibly a hairline fracture or just a bad sprain.

And maybe get some pain meds which I generally avoid. But the dang wrists aches enough to keep me awake at night and unhappy during the day. So pretty tired out!

Oh Yooly. I hope the silly thing stops acting up and keeping you up all night!

Me, heading to bed now 🤔 could blame the Salter scale (slow and can't function at all when damp so heading to the garbage now that I've realized it's still around!), the "are you a drug dealer scale" (too small and now lost) or the ozeri pronto scale which was quite good before it disappeared during the move.... but it was just some dang work thingy that was not cooperating that has kept me up!🤷‍♂️

Fingers crossed for you, Yooly. :( Wrists are tricky. In my injury ridden past decade I mucked up my wrist. No break showed up on the xray - but I got the " it's arthritis - carpal tunnel - another thing I can't remember" run around. It was none of those things I'd had for years - it was something acute that came about after I slipped and fell on ice while pulling The Boy around on his sled. Not even exactly sure what was wrong because I got scared about the contrast stuff when it came time for a CT scan. But after much farting around, 8 weeks in a thumb-mobilizing cast did the trick. I remember dreaming of cleaning strawberries :) Amazing what you miss! Fully healed. Was back to "heavy labour" the next summer.

I chuckled at the thought of your scale batteries lasting 4 years and PAV's not so long. Not that I think PAV might be a bit obsessive on the scale front... :)

My scale seems to have given up the ghost also. Not the batteries (unless 4 sets of replacement batteries were all dead at the same time). Today is my first day tracking again! Woohoo. Must get that scale working or purchase new one...

This is the one I bought ??? 4 years ago. It was doing well until I abandoned it. Think it died of a broken heart :(

    Worked really well until now!

    Well it’s what I’ve feared…
    3n91ep4l59f9.jpeg

The cast stays on for three weeks and then another three weeks of brace. Actually the cast feels better because my range of motion is limited. It’s a minor hairline fracture. And a prescription for pain meds. Woohoo 🎉 I went with a red cast because it’s festive and goes with the nail polish.

Tomorrow I make up all the various cookie doughs and freeze them. Baking will be done next week in phases. I’m trying to keep Christmas as normal as possible.

On the one hand, I'm really feeling for you of the one hand Yooly!

On the other hand, I think you may have some options of milking this well for Christmas once you at least are more comfortable and able to sleep.

So maybe take advantage of the opportunities afforded by being one-handed and festively painted?

Not being a meanie here I hope. Just making lemonade and omelette!

So Laurie, that is the style of the salter scale and I really don't like it because once it gets wet, damp or moist it will shut off on you in the middle of weighing things.

Also, these scales give me the impression of needing too much time to zero and come up with a figure.

Instant figures, instant zero, ability to stay on long enough to complete kitchen tasks while adding things, but also eventually turn off several minutes later. I think 5 minutes is a good time. Personally, not two. Ability to see past and around a big plate or pot without having to use the riser glass trick. All these things make for a better scale

And then once you've been habituated to using the scale through exposure therapy, it becomes comforting as opposed to a psychological burden

To the contrary, you miss it when you have to gues in one more direction when you don't actually know the exact weight because one dark secret of precise logging is that a lot of things in the end are pretty close calorie wise on a per gram basis. At least for me there's more variance by guessing the weight wrong then there is between say basmati or brown or white rice to bring up an example! 🤷‍♂️🤔

Only problem I found/shared was the inability to see past a big plate - but it wasn't insurmountable - just didn't centre the plate/pot.

What is your ideal scale? Will you post a link, PAV?

Today is my first day tracking in awhile. I really missed having a scale. So I guess it is a kind of "soft" beginning :)

Oh Yooly. Sorry for this. I guess a bone issue is better/quicker healing than a sprain??? Seems like you definitely had one or the other.
I admire your cookie baking spirit!

But matching cast and nails! That part is almost awesome!!!

Out of about... eight or so scales I've tried in the past few years two were the ones I liked better and they both had faults

This one is made, I believe, under several brands (or at least very similar looking models have been spotted around): https://ozeri.com/kitchen-scales/Ozeri-ZK14-AB-Digital-Multifunction-Kitchen/B01JK4XPVW

Both that one and the Oxo I suspect have different versions with maximum weight and sensitivity (0.5/1/5g) that changes. My suspicion is that it is the exact same product with a different setting / conversion factor in terms of how the electrical impulses get translated to weight.

Both have problems but both do several things very well.

The most important one I think is that they are platforms. The scale part is resting in the body and it measures by pressing down. So the mechanism/feet is not exposed on the counter having to be kept perfectly level and clean like a bathroom scale would.

Also the buttons are separate from the platform and don't depend on capacitance to function. This means you can use with wet fingers or even once something spills on the scale and that something spilling has less of a chance of turning off the scale on you.

The pronto annoyed me because the first two grams were always hit and miss. So I would classify it as 2g sensitivity. Oil spray is 9Cal per gram any way you look at it

Out of the two Oxo (white and black) the older, white, 2 batteries not 4, was the best one at quickly figuring out 1 and 2 grams. The black one needs some help at the 1g level sometimes but not as bad as the pronto.

The separate level for buttons/display I've found good and the pull out display simply awesome relative to not being able to pull it out to better see.

I still have to resort to a glass or tin/can to "elevate" a larger item so that I can see the numbers more easily... works faster than placing a plate "off-axis".

My first inclination would be to get another Oxo. it's just that they are crazy expensive and the black one didn't enthuse me with the "I never turn off" feature. I should have maybe sent it back when I first got it, I guess!

The 3-5kg of course is of benefit. The 2.5kg of the oxo is quite limiting. Of course the option exists to get the "next size up one".

I am still thinking whether and which to get to replace the white one that died.... currently just using the black with rechargeable batteries and a renewed vigor to slam the off button whenever I walk by!

I admit that between not feeling the urge to measure as precisely as I used to and knowing that I can live without the pull out display by using the "elevation" trick I am more tempted to go away from the oxo and with one that has closer to 5 or 6kg capacity. it helps that I still have the oxo (black) which is ok for 1g or so and does top up at 2.5kg

So if I buy another one writing this has made the decision for me (that I would get something that can accommodate a higher total weight).

(OXO scales look for the ones that mention pull out display)

zk14, I'm pretty sure, is what I had. My "quick" sort says that I would choose between zk12, 27, and 28 not necessarily in that order! :) or possibly the higher weight capacity pull out Oxo

I think I would "love" the ZK 27. But the bit about 5g is a give-away that it sucks for small amount of weights. So I would probably end up with the zk 27 (variable precision) even though I don't particularly like the look as much.

Thank you, PAV. In a wildly impetuous move - I ordered another scale yesterday (this is a measure of my wild moves as of late :) )

Hi all! I'm a big time lurker in this group. (Sorry) But something Yooly said brought me out of my lurkiness. You freeze your cookie dough???? Does that work well??? That could be a game changer for me. It wears me out every year, but I hate to make cookies too far in advance, for freshness's sake. I'm 60 years old, and it never occurred to me to freeze the dough! I could make the dough this weekend and not deal with it until closer to Christmas. Wow.... old dog, new tricks!

I believe I’m the oldest dog…. And a former lurker too. Do come join in Slashni because you never know what you may learn along the way.

YES cookie dough freezes well. Just like pie dough. The dough with higher fat content freezes very well - peanut butter blossoms, shortbread, butter, spritz, chocolate chip…. I wouldn’t freeze cake-like, wetter batter cookies or something with fruit mix ins.

I usually start in late November and make dough up. Divide the dough in manageable batches. Wrap each tightly in plastic wrap and then into ziplock bags. At least 24 hours before baking put the dough in the refrigerator to defrost. Next day, bring the dough out of the fridge and let it warm up a bit on the counter. And you’re good to go.

I think sometimes a rest in the freezer improves flavor. I made up three big batches of dough today for the big bake off next week. Didn’t even schmutz up my pretty red wrist cast too much.

You gals play with dough

I screwed up in my verbiage above Laurie when talking about the zk27!

Zk24 (garden and kitchen) is one I like and in the running for a basic scale (and don't ask why but for some reason I keep looking at the teal one).

Zk27 battery free, offset screen good noises except for the "weighs from 5g" means straight out the window it goes and now the Zk26 (the electronic version) is also suspect. Because was the 5g the electric vs kinetic thing or something else inherent to the model???).

Zk28, shape not make me happy much... but... variable graduation (shouldn't it be gradation?) technology! Now that has me interested. And 6kg max weight too. And can adjust power off to 5 minutes.....

And I can't seem to find it FOR sale anywhere :disappointed: Oh wait. I can... for a bit more than double the us price PLUS shipping I could get it from wayfair (CAD 38.99 vs homedepot usa 12.95)

(the zk14 is like CAD $20 on amazon but the 28 is not "finding", thanks amazon search)
