And no, I am not looking for "420" for the sake of baby kittens! Just for mainlining chocolate chips and canola oil spray, m'ok?

NAILED the sucker @ CAD $19.95 and here by Wednesday on Prime! https://www.amazon.ca/Ozeri-Kitchen-Variable-Graduation-Technology/dp/B0BRYM4RD4

Obviously it will require "elevation" for larger objects as it looks to be fairly flat.

The basic 14 model is available at the same price and has some degree of built in elevation. That's the one that I thought was ok but had some trouble with the first couple of grams (is it one gram or two gram or no gram) https://www.amazon.ca/Ozeri-ZK14-T-Digital-Multifunction-Kitchen/dp/B004164SRA

And I still think it is gradAtion not gradUation! :naughty:

But will I use it right away??? (Seasonal eating out on both Saturday and Sunday). Goofing off pics coming up soon 🤣

Amazon says that lettucie or Letucia or (thinking names which could prevent defenestration if unhappy) has shipped and is expected today

Lol ... is that what really happens with the scales that you are not impressed with? They learn to fly???

Busy day today. Chores: vaccuming, folding the laundry I did yesterday, washing two loads of bedding and wrestling the sheets back onto our leesa mattress solo. Meal prepping for the week. I made a beef/mushroom/green bean stew and a stuffed pepper skillet with lean ground beef and cauliflower in place of rice. Watching a hockey game now.

Oh and I wrapped Christmas presents for all our kids. Still waiting on 2 to show up.

    Well.
The package arrived but it is probably bad news for Lettucia!
Assuming Amazon keeps to their Jan 31 return promise I don't think she will be staying.

Don't get me wrong. For $22.34 inclusive of all taxes she really a far from terrible solution.

But I am fairly scale snooty and I do have rechargeable batteries and a fully (and well) functioning scale whose only current issue seems to be faster than expected battery drain. Which is annoying. But not impossible to deal with.

So here is an (unfair) quick comparison and review. Why unfair? Because on Dec 20, 21 when I bought the black OXO 5lb scale my final price was 46.62. Today she sells for $71.84 with taxes. While Lettucia arrived at the house on a Sunday for $22.34. So less than 1/3 the price!

    OXO: capacity 5lbs precision 1g

Lettucia (ozeri z28 "graduation" = gradation technology with 0.1g precision below 420g, 1g above, and 13.22lb capacity

    Physical:
Oxo is larger though still small and compact.
Oxo is more solid. Possibly TWICE as solid  430.5g vs 215g

Usability: Oxo has the pull out display. In the pictures, possibly due to focus, it looks terrible BUT, the OXO LIT LED display is WAY WAY WAY better. Note: direct sunlight not tested. So way easier to use and see the measurements on the OXO

Measurement: Lettucia DID search a little bit. And did "drift"/change her mind within a 1g range. Even though she stabilized after taring... I've only taken a couple of measurements and she has drifted/searched every time. By comparison OXO drifts incredibly infrequently. Note: everything was at room temp and I wasn't measuring hot or cold items.

Lettucia does go to higher weight 13.3lbs vs 5lbs. That's a BIG difference. She was not faster than the OXO but she was not appreciably slower other than when she started drifting.

    I am seriously contemplating:
    a) just sending her back and NOT getting anything or
    b) getting the 11lb OXO to see if power off issue is fixed and acquire the 2.5 to 5kg upgrade.
I do believe that the 11lb is less "sensitive" than the 5lbs and, at "just" $89.59 at my door, it is just OVER FOUR TIMES Lettucia's price!

So yes, while I am not impressed with the smaller physical size and lighter, more toy-like, feel. The relative cost differences are immense. And the extra precision is of marginal/no benefit for weight-loss, whereas speed of measurement response may well be!

Sorry, the picture sequence is not in order. What happened in order was:

First I looked at the weight and relative size of the zk28. 215g. The chili peppers acted as a wall to make the back of the scales line up.

Then I looked at a tin of coffee with the OXO at the bottom and the ZK28 on top. Tin of coffee weights 161g (160.6g), so everyone is in agreement.

To see the non pull out display I used a handy can of soup as a riser. The pictures don't capture the weight of the can but show the measurement drift between 430.2g, 430.9g and 431.2g where the ZK28 is drifting a bit while measuring the weight of the OXO scale.

Then the tin is measured a second time (with the can of soup and the OXO on top) at 160.6 by the ZK28 (and again at 161g by the OXO). But then the ZK28 drifts to 160.7 in terms of what it is displaying.

In the pictures the backlit display shows marginal or negative improvement. IN real life it isn't even a close comparison. While the unlit LED is readable the backlit LED is EASILY readable.

Beginning to be concerned over PAVs scale obsession! 😳
My cheap Polder scale has never been tested against any other scale. The main purpose of my scale is to convince my lying eyes that a piddling amount of food is indeed one serving.

NIC - your post makes me recall the days of dealing with house upkeep, Christmas, kids, and a job. Exhausting!

Hi all. Well, I froze some dough this weekend! My son is not excited. He said, "You're experimenting with Christmas cookies? Do you think that's wise?" Ha! He can't wait for baking day. By the way, he's 27.

Thankfully, Yooly, the world is STILL spinning! I was concerned there for a second first thing this morning; but, thankfully the caffeine intake is within acceptable rounding error!

So how scared is our Laurie now? I mean they DO offer to accept returns till the end of January (more or less) You could order one of each and then...

Scared enough to wait until I return from Newfoundland before I order :)

YES - just booked a flight for 9 pm Christmas day. Didn't think I could do it - but no chemo coming up it seems ???? That is another terrifying story/thought but I"m not thinking about it other than - woohoo I can see The Boy who stepped out of camera and cried during our video chat when I told him I wouldn't be there during christmas. And elder son - and have Christmas day here with younger son! Writing this is making me cry.... :D

You have to post an update when you bake those cookies Slash! (hope that abbreviation is okay - then I won't have to keep checking to remember what comes after :) )

Can't wait to hear your son's thoughts :)

Christmas in Newfoundland! With your grandson! What could be better Laurie? And you get to spend time with both sons. 🥰

I see PAV is still obsessing over his new scale. Methinks you’re a bit of a perfectionist. Me too. But as I get old I’ve finally come to accept nothing/no one will ever be perfect or up to my finicky standards. Learned to pick my battles. Sometimes good enough needs to be celebrated and enjoyed.

Funny how grown sons cling to Christmas traditions. I’m sure the cookies will be fine. Bakeries do this all the time. Not freezing dough for years but weeks in advance of bake day. I resorted to freezing cookie dough when hubby was active duty military. I’d bake cookies for his airmen and base parties. Those kids could eat!!!

Perhaps son might consider helping with prep if he doesn’t find the cookies up to his standards? And of course it might not work well on lower fat cookies.

On the cookie front. I thought I was done. But I just picked up my car from the mechanics and a repair quote at $775 came in at $525. Those boys are getting some shortbread cookies tomorrow. :)

So this was a close call.

Was walking in the forest path. Something hit the bottom of my glasses. I shut my right eye and stopped. I pulled an inch long twig that was held in place between my shut eye lids, my glasses and my nose.

No visible scratches. Recently fallen tree extending into the path. Twigs at eye level.

    I like glasses.

Close call there PAV! Note - do not eat raw cookie dough EVER. The stuff sold to be eaten is pasteurized. Not so with homemade.

Those car repair boys deserve a double batch of shortbreads, Laurie. I have never had a car repair come in under estimate. Merry Christmas to you!

Sounds like PAV had a Christmas blessing too. Glad for your glasses our good man. We NEED your vision. Who else would keep us up to speed on counter scale technology and availability????? WHO I ask?

Nine more days of the fancy red wrist cast. 👹 It weighs a ton and is uncomfortable especially at night. I just can’t sleep well with my arm and hand trapped in a rigid, airless cast. It’s not my first experience with broken bones or casts but I just seem to be less tolerant. Trying to dress, shower or do simple tasks one handed results in shoulder pain. The removable brace will be a joy!

There - I have whined sufficiently.

I begin cookie baking on Thursday. Hubby will be helping with rolling out dough🫣 and moving cookie sheets in and out of the oven. He likes to cook but this will be an exercise in patience for him. 🥹

He may appreciate the cookies more given his participation?

BONUS he will be handy & available to consume any "strays" so they don't end up sitting there staring you in the eyes!

Only a few more days with the Santa cast!

Yup: pre-testing and quality control chocolates before putting them in their bags... not a great plan!

Hey Yooly - So I froze my dough and figured that I would take it out of the freezer the night before baking day. Is that what you do? Glad you are close to getting the cast off!

Just to be sure put the frozen dough in the fridge a full day before. Then take it out of the fridge an hour or so ahead of baking to warm up a bit. Watch your baking time if the dough is cold. Good luck!
It’s a bit of experimenting but should work just fine.

In a past century, I swear that I observed cookies cooking from frozen in a hot oven in just a few minutes.

The image even has a metal sheet and parchment paper.

Could be a dream... or direct from freezer to the oven experiment especially if it is a convection oven! 🤷‍♂️

I would experiment with a test batch! 😎🤔🫣

    Lettucia is still around!

    For $20 (US$14.80; €13.61) she is doing more than I should expect!🤷‍♂️

And the "unsettled" behavior is way less than before/almost non existent, which makes me suspect that I didn't wait long enough for the scale to come up to temperature after sitting at the doorstep all day. Sure, I waited a few hours but she was still in the (cardboard) shipping boxes....
