Just just glad you're OK. Spot of tea fixes all.... right! I will try to remember that when knife wielding people come a-visiting. Make them some tea.3 -
A spot of tea can be very disarming.
Yooly - I was looking at getting a DEXA scan last year after my doctor warned me about the risk of bone loss. It sort of went to the wayside while COVID was raging. You have really piqued my interest again though!!!! But, what I found here, was that I could get bone density results (covered by health insurance) or lean/fat mass information (privately done) but not both at the same time. Which sounds absolutely absurd. Maybe I'll look into it again once I get down closer to my goal. Sometime this summer!3 -
Oh my goodness Laurie - what a drama! You sound as though you handled the situation beautifully, showing such compassion and kindness. If only everyone was so gracious...3

Thank you for the anniversary wishes. Our daughter surprised us and took us out for dinner to a very nice restaurant. It's one we only go to for very special occasions because it is pretty expensive.4
-
Very happy anniversary ABD!
And happy birthday to Athijade! Hope you get to enjoy your celebratory Indian dinner 🥘.4 -
Happy birthday 🎉 and hope you're feeling a bit better! 👍2

Laurie I believe they refuse because of billing rules.
The machine was set to slightly higher x ray intensity for bone density--at least the older Hologic Peter @ bodycomp imaging was using at the time
Mom did a scan of her own in 2017. They were visiting, she was curious re her own body composition, and while we were at it bone density, and since we were there I did one too, which is why my last one was 18 months after the others
Peter did two separate scan run sessions and even varied her position slightly for the bone density and because of knee replacements. Going in we knew she had some level of bone loss after long term prednisone.
So same machine and tech, but two runs with different settings, different software program processing, and different billing codes 🤔
The bone density info on the body composition scan was extremely less detailed than the section by section and in depth detail level of the actual bone density scan.2 -
OMG. I've spent the afternoon reading Hamnet. Had to change my tshirt as it was sodden with the tears that dripped off my chin. Writing that draws you close with its beauty, then delivers an emotional head butt that shatters bone and drives the splinters into your brain. Best book I've read in a loooong time....4

My goodness, I have missed a lot while our company was here!….so glad we are all safe!….1

Glad to see your nose poking in!
I was actually thinking it was about time to find out what you've been up to!
YOU, and also @AlexandraFindsHerself1971
And don't think I haven't noticed @Dante_80 playing possum at club med-sea... I didn't know possums could go swimming in February... but hey, it's the only explanation I can come up with as to why he hasn't been posting lately!
Not to forget to mention @bmeadows380 -- yeah, probably too busy canning -- but hey: if the plan of doing this that and the other are not working, just fall back on controlling the level of calories that are coming in on a daily/weekly basis so as to create a REASONABLE FOR YOUR CURRENT CIRCUMSTANCES deficit.
Boy... I am waxing poetic... and not Hamlet style (that's for @Bella_Figura )3 -
Been wondering where everyone went lately. I miss them! Need all the support I can get. And maybe I could be helpful to others?3

I finally had my thyroid surgery the 16th!
I am home and apart from some massive swelling around the incision at the base of my throat, I feel good. REALLY good. I didn't realize how much the goiter was constricting my breathing as well as my esophagus. It's that "OMG I can breathe again" euphoria you get after a head cold.
Apparently the remaining lobe of my thyroid gland was three times the size it should have been, and had grown down to my chest and was wrapping round my neck towards the back. No wonder I was having issues!
I'm not allowed to work out for two weeks, and I'm on soft food to let the irritation heal for another few days, I think. I'll start my usual diet again (and work on the weight loss again) when there's no pain or sensation when I swallow food. But otherwise I feel really good.

Yes, Uncle PAV I am still here and struggling mightily….but I am here….
Glad you are doing better Alexandra….so happy you finally had your operation…1 -
wooohooo @AlexandraFindsHerself1971 This is AMAZING good news! Woohoo!!!!0
-
Thank you for the details, PAV!
Thank you for the beautiful words, Bella!
Glad you had a special dinner, ABD! What a fine daughter you have
Happy Birthday, @Athijade - hope you are feeling tip top for your Indian feast!4 -
@AlexandraFindsHerself1971 I am so happy you got your surgery!
And thank you all for the birthday wishes!
I am feeling okay today. Still dealing with some back pain along with my left knee/leg and my left elbow/shoulder. I am thinking I used my left leg and arm to brace myself in the accident. No serious injuries or anything luckily, but I will most likely be sore for a bit while the muscles and stuff heal.
My Indian food feast is on the way. Chicken Korma, Aloo Gobi, rice, regular naan, garlic naan, mango lassi, and mango chutney. Then my aunt sent me some treats (a couple chocolate covered strawberries, a mini cheesecake, and a mini bday cake (like 2 bite cakes)). I also bought myself a couple cupcakes cause I didn't expect to get anything and I wanted a "cake" but did not want to buy a whole cake.3 -
Sounds like quite a feast Athijade! Enjoy it in good (or improving) health.
So happy the surgery was a success Alexandra. Seems like it will improve your health tremendously. Heal quickly and I look forward to reading about you awesome meal preparations. 😍1 -

Hello hello, definitely not swimming...but more into stewing in my shell currently lol. Suffering from a somewhat mild albeit pretty annoying case of coronavirus. At least I get some time off work for a consolation prize!
Hope everyone is doing fine guys..

Wow, Alexandra!!!! Big congratulations. Can't imagine what you have been going through. That must have keep you at high alert all the time! Glad your are breathing freely now.

Thank you for the compliments on my daughter. When my kids do stuff like this for their dad & I or when they just help someone in need I feel very proud and feel like we have done a good job raising them. They are pretty good kids.
Wishing everyone a speedy recovery from illness, surgery, & car accidents.5 -
So I've had some rubbish exercise days this past week due to 3 severe storms in succession making walking unpleasant and borderline dangerous due to flying debris and falling trees...
But, I've discovered two new sources of low cal fibre! And as you all know, I'm fibre-obsessed, so this is GOOD NEWS!
The first discovery was a snack bar called 'Good Fibrations' by a UK start up company called The Gut Stuff. Each 35g cocoa and hazelnut bar contains 117 calories and 11.7g of fibre. And they taste nice too! There are 3 other flavours too: Peanut Butter, Raspberry and Coconut and Apple and Cinnamon. Yummy.
Second discovery was a sweet syrup called Troo, again by a small start up company. This stuff (like the Good Fibrations bars) gets its fibre from inulin....each 12g spoonful contains 20 calories and contains 8g fibre. They also do a chocolate syrup - a 12g spoonful contains 27 calories and adds 9g fibre.
I drizzled a teaspoon on my toast this morning and it was good. Sweet without being sickly...sort of like honey...no nasty aftertaste. I'm going to buy a jar of the chocolate one too!
Yay...do you get inulin products on your side of the pond? Is there a downside that I don't know about? I hope not, because if this is all as good as it seems it has the potential for being a game-changer in my daily battle to get enough fibre!2 -
Just double check whether they are assigning SOME calories to the inulin (cause some people play games with numbers!)
1.5 kcal/g
For the purpose of food labeling, it is recommended that chicory inulin and oligofructose, like all the other carbohydrates that are more or less completely fermented in the human colon, should be given a caloric value of 1.5 kcal/g (6.3 kJ/g).
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/10395615/#:~:text=For the purpose of food,(6.3 kJ/g).
And keep it more balanced than *I* would... as if that's hard to do!2 -
Don’t think this is available here. All I could find are supplements which kind of defeat the fun.
Physical therapy ended last week so back in the gym three mornings per week. It’s slow going but I don’t want to re-injure myself. Went to brunch with a friend yesterday and had a wonderful lox, egg and cream cheese crepe. Delicious but lots of calories so I cut back on breakfast (fruit and coffee) and had salad later.2 -

Oooh, not sure. The labels don't split down what proportion of the calories relate to which elements of the product...so not sure if they've counted the inulin as 0 cals or not. Worst case scenario, I add an extra 18 cals to each spoonful of Troo (1.5 x 12g spoonful) and 53 cals to each Good Fibrations bar (35g x 1.5). Which would make the Troo 38 or 45 cals/spoonful depending if clear or chocolate, and the Good Fibrations would bump up to 170 cals each...
Not a deal breaker....And keep it more balanced than *I* would... as if that's hard to do!
I'm certainly too stingy to eat the bars regularly (they work out at around £1 each); the Troo is cheaper at about £0.23 per 12g spoonful so I may use that a little more frequently, but I don't envisage having more than 3 or 4 spoonfuls per week...3 -
I don't see the syrups available here do you PAV???1
-
Nope. AHA.
Inulin IS a flucto-oligosacharide. Apparently a "medium chain" one as opposed to "short chain ones known as oligo-fructose".
I had tried to experiment with fructo-ologosacharides in the past -- they were one of the main ingredients in quest and kirkland protein bars a few years back till they got slammed on the calorie counts, and got scammed by a "canadian" company that was selling chinese import product (because we don't have enough wheat in canada to make our own ya know).
I found them to NOT be sweet enough for me as a sweetener though I am sure they have other functions such as binder and what have you.
Apparently Garfield and I are "today's consumers!"
Inulin is a term applied to a heterogeneous blend of fructose polymers found widely distributed in nature as plant storage carbohydrates. Oligofructose is a subgroup of inulin, consisting of polymers with a degree of polymerization (DP) ≤10. Inulin and oligofructose are not digested in the upper gastrointestinal tract; therefore, they have a reduced caloric value. They stimulate the growth of intestinal bifidobacteria. They do not lead to a rise in serum glucose or stimulate insulin secretion. Several commercial grades of inulin are available that have a neutral, clean flavor and are used to improve the mouthfeel, stability and acceptability of low fat foods. Oligofructose has a sweet, pleasant flavor and is highly soluble. It can be used to fortify foods with fiber without contributing any deleterious organoleptic effects, to improve the flavor and sweetness of low calorie foods and to improve the texture of fat-reduced foods. Inulin and oligofructose possess several functional and nutritional properties, which may be used to formulate innovative healthy foods for today's consumer1
