Hey y’all, I am Debbie from Wilson, North Carolina. I am 68 years old, married to Larry for almost 46 years. No children but we have 5 nieces and a nephew and grand nieces and nephews. I am a retired teacher and was doing a lot of substitute teaching and many interim positions. I worked about every day until Covid. I live in the country on a farm. I love to walk, I tolerate strength training (I did not say love yet). I guess it takes a while to build that relationship. I love to BAKE. Nope, baking is not a good hobby for someone that has to watch weight. I have been a yo-yo dieter all of my adult life. In April 2013 I was at an all-time high at 173 pounds and climbing. All of my clothes were tight and I was depressed. While sitting on the couch (probably eating a snack) I was watching the television show "The Doctors" and saw a segment on My Fitness Pal. I thought, what the heck, I'll give it a shot-nothing to lose, but maybe some fat. I joined MFP April 9, 2013 and have logged every day since. I also bought a fitbit zip in August of 2013. MFP and my little zip gave me just what I needed. I upped my game to a fitbit Versa last year at Christmas. One of those “me to me” gifts. I have met some amazing, inspiring, supportive people on MFP that have given me the encouragement and support that I needed. I knew what to do, how to do it, but I just didn't have my heart in it. I am now around 125-129 pounds and am walking 10-20 thousand steps a day and lifting light weights. For me, maintenance is harder than dieting, but I am doing ok. I thank all of my new friends here in our F2F group & the habit tracker for helping me stay focused. I have definitely had a few ups and downs. When you log every day you realize this and make adjustments. One thing that I have found helpful for long term success is to record my weight yearly on my profile page. The following weights were recorded on my birthday (May 6) each year of this journey. I try to use 127 as my "magic number" to watch out for weight gain. When I weigh 127, I jump back into diet mode for a few days and it seems to work for me.

I look forward to October being our month for health and fitness. We can do this together. You will my mantra many times: KEEP ON KEEPING ON………………………….
@minstrelofsarcasm
Thanks for what you and @therseamvean do for our group, you are appreciated.
Love your goals for October! I pray that you are recovering from Covid.
@kiane50 – you appear to be an animal lover. My husband has 2 cats up at the farm. They both just showed up at different times and they love him. They have finally gotten to the place that I can rub them but only if he is around. The Botanical Garden walk sounds wonderful. I am still walking on the country road in front of our house or the farm paths.
@1theresamcvean
Thanks for posting your story again, I have been here just a month so I needed the update. Great goals for October and I know that you can get to your goal. As an unofficial motivator I will try to work into official motivator status:):) Loved the kitten link that you shared for Bob.
@jugar –great to see your post on goal zone, I think you and I are the only ones using it. I sure hope that others are reaching their goals and will join us soon.
@xX_PhoenixRising_Xx
Congrats on the weight loss! Having a gym in your house is awesome. I am sure that helps on the days that we just don’t feel like getting out. Love your goals, especially finish at less than starting.
@Melzz19
I love your job and active lifestyle. Your goals are great! Reading this morning makes me think of changing a few of mine for October. Great pictures!
@Cuddleme72 Welcome to the team! Wow, what a journey. I sure hope the health issues are better. I like your plan of walking (I am also an avid walker) Any amount of steps is a start in the right direction. You can slowly work your way up. Don’t forget in house walking. Each commercial on TV will allow you to get 300 steps. It also gets you up and down from your chair, couch etc. You can do this, I believe in you!
@GingerPwr
Welcome back! I am also from NC (Wilson) I hope to see you in the goal zone chats.
@CassieGetsFit – Great to have a partner to help you get back on track. I have 2 pieces of advice that I live by: If you aren’t hungry don’t eat and Keep on Keeping On……Girl, you can do it, make October your month, Own it!
@ljdanny – good to see other walkers here! I hope that you are able to get the spin bike, variety is always good. Prayers lifted for you for the upcoming surgery.
@mainbeachbum –Back and ankle trouble, wow! I hope that you are recovering and continue to get better every day. I love the goals, mine are very similar. Glad that you were able to take the anniversary trip.
@Cafelelia Thanks for the reintroduction. September is behind us and now to October with a new attitude, resolve, hope, dream, whatever works for us. Congratulations on nearing your goal weight. This may be your month. I love your goals, especially the stress busting one. I need to take a page from your book. And yes, by all means enjoy your holidays and birthday. I know that you have the determination to get right back at it after these momentous occasions. If Covid has taught me anything it is to do our best to be fit enough to enjoy our time here on planet Earth.
worth repeating: KEEP ON KEEPING ON............................ have a great week!4 -

Thankfully, @minstrelofsarcasm has been talking to me and is going try and help me get back on track! I'm going to remain on the sideline again for this month and see what I can pull off before rejoining you guys! 😊🥰
@CassieGetsFit2013 -
You're going to do great and get right back at it! Just have to find a system that works for you and stick with it. Once you've got a strong routine in place, you're going to really show us what you're made of. We're here for you!
@Melzz19 -
Oh my goodness, that is gorgeous. I'm very jealous; it's been raining on and off here for a few days, and it's also chilly. Gotta take advantage of that sunshine while we've got it!
@debbiewsharpe -
I'm recovering decently well, thank you. I think I got lucky and was only hit with a mild case. Also very fortunate that I'm young and healthy and well informed of what triggers my pre-existing conditions.
@Cafelelia -
Your birthday is coming up? I do believe you are legally required to tell us when it is. Not for any specific reason, of course. Definitely not any reason. No reasons. None at all. Nope.

Are we supposed to be keeping track of our steps?1
-
@Cuddleme72 -
Only if you'd like to. Some of us do, some of us don't. I think it's a helpful measure of how active you are during the day, especially if you don't complete any other structured workouts or if walking is your main form of exercise.1 -

Well the small progress that I made I blew this week by eating a lot of bread. My big weakness.5 -
Hi all,
I'm so behind this week - and how are we into our October thread already?? Quick intro then - I'm Shelli, live in Edinburgh, Scotland with my best friend/flatmate and our kitties. Have struggled with my weight for prob as long as I can remember, hit my highest ever weight of about 210lbs last year so this year decided I needed to get my butt in gear or it was just going to keep going up. Has been an up and down year (as I'm sure most people can relate to) and all the additional stresses haven't helped, but the scale is going in a generally downwards direction so am trying to keep positive about that!
As I mentioned, had my new tattoo done on Friday. Was a longer sitting than I'd hoped and didn't manage to get the whole thing done in one, but am very happy with how it's looking (will add piccie below). It did lead to me having a very 'take it easy' weekend though and def having a bit of a cheat on the food side. Have a feeling the scales will not be as kind this week!
@xX_PhoenixRising_Xx - are you the one with the gorgeous Alice in Wonderland tat or am I am getting muddled with someone else?

Well, bread is a Covid comfort food, Debbie. You have the rest of the month to lose it and I'll bet it only takes a day or two. Hugs to you, my friend.1 -

Wow! That is beautiful. The cat is majestic and the paw prints are so realistic. I have my late cats' paw prints done in clay. Not a tattoo on me. Yet.0 -

Yes, that's me 🙂🙂 And I love your cat tattoo, it looks so real! I am a complete cat person. 🐈2 -
What a great month we had collectively as a team! Kudos for everyone! I would like to welcome all new members and share a bit of my story with you, I AM THE FOX IN THE HENHOUSE! I am here to offer encouragement that will lead to success! I make mistakes as we all do, I slip up stumble and fall. (I will refer you to the Pizza, fries and beer night last week that lead to a two day bout with a bad case of explosive diarrhea ), the really important thing is to keep getting back up! I was a former competitive athlete (Cycling) on an amateur level, trying to live the best life that I could. I was a single Dad who raised my two boys into a couple of very fine respectful men! I worked the same job for 31 years and suddenly I was unemployed because of the company downsizing. I quickly found employment at a wonderful company with a future. The only problem is that it's a second shift position. For thirty years I would get out of work then workout then sleep, to wake up refreshed for the next day. Now, if I workout, it's before work (Therefore my workouts are less than beast mode) and the night shift becomes very difficult because my body wants to recover while I'm at work. I had gained 60 lbs in 3 years of working the off shift. Thanks in a large part to this group that number is now 20 lbs to go! I'm slowely but steadily finding the balance with working out and working the "Off" shift, definitely an ongoing process!
I wish you all the best for the month of October and beyond and I will offer up a couple of my secrets for wieght loss: (write these down!)
1. When eating donuts – only eat the center part
2. If your dog is fat, you’re not getting enough exercise
That is all for now, have a great week and stay positive!

Friday check in
Steps 10242
Water 64 oz
Walk 2 30-minute walks today
Food prelogged
@1theresamcvean Yes, brunch was a breakfast version of chicken and waffles at an Italian restaurant which is why pizelles instead of real waffles. That probably decreased the calories, too!
@debbiewsharpe Luckily after about 15 months of back pain, it finally went away completely. I just never got back to exercising!
@KUMEcyclingteam The 2nd secret for weight loss cracked me up! But so true!!
Congratulations, team, on a job well done in September!4 -
So I guess I’m trying to rush this week...that was a Monday check in...not Friday! 🤨4

I totally understand. You do this your way and don’t take things on that you haven’t planned for, Daniele. We don’t want this to be overwhelming, we’re here to support the healthy choices you make. Have a great night!0 -
Hi ladies. Sorry I disappeared for a few days. All is well. Just super busy. Calories in today 1148. 13860 steps and counting. So now to figure how to favorite this thread so I can find it again more easily.
Welcome @kiane50 @Cuddleme72 and @kos33
My September goals stay under 1300 calories and get 12000 steps per day. I did not get my steps every day but most weekdays. I also had a goal of 210. I made it barely. I’m doing low carb. Not keto. So I’m not strict with it but higher protein and fat allow me to stay fuller longer.
October goals I would like to see 200. But I feel plateaued. I may have to add in exercises to get there. Right now my life is a little busy so no guarantees that’s happening at the moment. So if I stay here a few months until sports are over, it is what it is.
I’m a single mom of a 12 year old girl who is in volleyball and cheerleading at the moment. I have a bachelors degree in biology. And I work in my field. Funny though I absolutely hated microbiology in college and it’s the only class I got a C in. And it’s the only thing I use. 😂. I have a job close to home and it’s lenient when I need it to be, so I’m not complaining. For instance if I have to run back home to get my daughter up for the bus that’s acceptable.
So I got bored in the midst of covid and I’ve been slowly remodeling my house. The kitchen is next and flooring throughout. So far I have redone the upstairs. Now my daughters 2 bedrooms are like a studio apartment. But I forbid her from getting a fridge and a microwave or I would never see her. 😂. We also redid the entry room (mudroom) and bathroom in the spring.
My weight has been up and down my entire life. I was 242 the day my daughter was born and 180 3 months after. But at some point the sedentary job, long hours, and a relationship based around food I woke up one day at 268 and that was it. So I have slowly been losing weight for 2 years without really any effort. Just changed jobs and ended the relationship (not over food). But I’ve decided to kick this in gear and so I joined this group last month. It helps me stay accountable.6 -
@kandi3570 Great intro! You've been an inspiration in your first month with us. One thing I have found that helped me with plateaus is to eat higher calories and higher carbs a couple of days a week. Not too much, mind you. I steal calories from other days and 'eat up.' I believe though I'm not a scientist like you, that it tricks my body into not thinking that I'm starving. Thus plateau averted.0

For everyone who's new, and those of us who are often confused (like me), here's a bit of a cheat sheet:
- October here is four weeks long. Running Sunday to Saturday, until October 31st. That's unusual because sometimes a calendar month runs over into the next month. Like September. It ran until October 3rd.
- Don't try to keep up at first. Just come on in and read what's on the page you land on. Comment on just that page and don't worry about keeping up with everything you missed since last visiting. Don't worry about learning names either.
- We're here to support you when you're new.
- We like pet pics. So, dogs and cats are great to share.
- No question is off-limits and fake it 'til you make it.
- Most months, it's our newest members who inspire us the most. So, don't be shy.
- Welcome aboard!
2 -
I sorta tried that. And science doesn’t have all the answers either. We all know that size 2 that can outeat everyone at the table. No one has figured out how to put that into a pill. If they did none of us would be here struggling. But I did eat more over the weekend. I think I need to increase water and build some muscle. But I will figure it out.3
-
@KUMEcyclingteam
As a Canadian, I think tip one doesn't apply. We have Timbits. Have you ridden your bike to Canada? If not, when you they open the borders again, please do. You can fuel up on the centre (note the Canadian spelling) of the donuts here.
Luckily, my dog is not fat. But, he likes beer. Again, he's Canadian. Perhaps it's the beer pong that keeps him trim.
7 -
@1theresamcvean Ahhhhh, you found the loop "hole" lol. Your pup is definitely not fat!
If dogs wore fitbits would the get credit for twice as many steps seeing as they have twice as many legs? (These are the questions that keep me up at night)3 -
Hi all; I’m a 43 year old mom from the Prairies in Canada! I have three boys, one in university and two in high school. I do admin type work in an office. : D
I struggled with my weight after my third child. Got pretty high, up to around 220. Once covid hit I took it as a sign to work on my diet and fitness and improve myself. I cut out pop, chocolate bars etc, kept to my calorie goal and started walking every day! I also started to do intermittent fasting and went to eating two meals a day and cut out most snacking.
This plan got me going and I’ve been able to get to an overweight Bmi recently. I’m thinking 125 -130 will be my goal range, although I will have to see how I’m feeling. Currently I’m doing c25K, plus some exercise classes. I’ve started working out with a beginner weights routine at my gym. This will be a long term goal for me, to increase my strength and muscles. 💪💪
Welcome to the new team members!
Cheers!2 -
