US distances are mind-boggling. Here in the UK a 200 mile trip is considered really long, and often takes hours (or days) of planning. I’m meeting my sisters for lunch in a few weeks (160 miles away) and when I said I was travelling home the same day they were astonished and aghast, as if I were contemplating something extremely risky and insane.

Ah, but everything's relative! On our tiny island, 200 miles feels like a long way! Most people live within an easy half hour's drive of family, friends, work, shops, hospitals, urban centres etc. It's less than 300 miles from the most easterly part of England to the most westerly part of Wales, and even Land's End at the extreme SW of England to John o' Groats in the extreme NE of Scotland is only 814 miles by road. It's still relatively common to find people who rarely travel beyond a 50 mile radius of home.

Granted, I've traveled my entire life (well, minus the 20 years of hell with my ex, which was most of my adult life). But even then, I've traveled far more than most people around HERE. Many of them have barely ever left the county.
Canada (obviously), Mexico, all over the US. Lived in 8 states, including alaska. the virgin islands, carribean. And hubby (bless him) says as long as we can afford it ... go. sometimes he comes, sometimes he doesn't. Alabama is next month. Friend of mine is hosting a 5K and i dont run (ew running. blech) but Holly is the mascot and cant drive (shes smart but not that smart LMAO) and id go anyway to hang out and have fun its a whole weekend thing. bestie is coming with me for that. we'll be going up to canada if the arseholes in Quebec could ever get it together and renew pauls passport and send it back. next august is mexico (with bestie, last time i went with my sister. i had fun but wont go with my sister again LMAO)
So many more places i want to go but are considerably more expensive.2 -
Most British people travel overseas on holiday - to all four corners of the globe - but still consider a 200 mile domestic drive a long trip. Folks are weird. I love to travel and I’ve driven or cycled around most European & Scandinavian countries (and lived in Rome for a few years) but due to my husband’s health issues going beyond Europe is more difficult. Maybe one day we’ll finally get to see the Canadian rockies.4

In canada I've only seen the greater toronto area (hubby lived about an hour southwest). lived there his whole life and hasnt been outside ontario LOL but he had been to the states and mexico before meeting me2 -

Yep, Canadian Rockies is my dream destination, for which you can thank Jenny Tough's videos.
As a Guardian-reading-socialist-liberal-leftie-pro-choice-feminist-atheist-gun-hating-diversity-loving-cosmopolitan I'm not sure they'd welcome me with open arms in the US Rockies. Then again, I'm not sure I'd be too welcome in the Canadian Rockies either!

It was 750 miles from pauls front door to mine when we were dating. he did it every 3 weeks. would leave early from work (around noon) on thursday and get here around 1-2 am (if he was super tired hed pull over somewhere and sleep a couple of hours overnight in a parking lot lol, then continue on, but he was up at 4 or 5 am every day and then worked a physical job on top of it). he would say it was a 12 hour drive but it was closer to 13-14 if he didnt stop. he counted from when he crossed the border but it took him 1-2 hours (usually) to get to, and then time at the border (so depending on how busy that was). now when we go up it is a pretty consistent 14-15 (sometimes a bit more), because me and bathroom stops, holly is with us, he drives a bit slower, me and the 'oh! i want to stop there!', etc ....3 -

✅ 15,000 steps - 23,310 Going to try to break my record this month. September/October seem the best months of the year for walking - not too hot - no ice/snow - rain is reasonable. My highest count so far for one calendar month was July with 538.677 step, but I didn't start tracking until last November. Sometime before the end of this year I'm going to meet my new goal. I'll walk as much as I can to meet it halfway maybe (I know you lose weight in the kitchen, but the more I walk the less time I spend in the kitchen!)

When we moved from Key West to Las Vegas it was the worst trip we ever had….you won’t even believe this….But it is true!….5 dogs,my mother,our pregnant daughter and her husband and his cousin,a friend of ours and my husband and I….3 U Haul trucks,one towing 2 cars and 3 of us driving cars….a five day trip took ten days with numerous breakdowns of U Hauls, switching trucks, and finally hiring a mover to rescue us somewhere in N. Mississippi….you would not have believed the problems we had!….3

Canadian Rockies is still quite left coast granola I would say since Banff/Jasper also have lots of foreign exchange/work experience students in the labor force. Canmore is less international more local loaded as a personal impression, non authoritative

Oh, I forgot 'mask-wearing-vaccine-supporting' among the list of my attributes that might get me punched or otherwise endangered in more conservative areas. You see fewer people every day in masks in public places here, but we mask-wearers are still in the majority at the moment.2

The vaccine and mask thing is very much on my mind as I'm simultaneously fairly careful (KN95 masks, change sidewalks when I spot people, avoid people where possible) and at the same time engaging in essentially high risk activities such as travel, dealing with construction trades people, bringing Greek girl over from Greece for a visit, driving and/or air travel between Alberta and BC even before the vaccines were out.
There is a marked difference in how people treat masks, masked mandates, vaccination between towns and provinces and based on their various professions too.
Obviously I know that political affiliations are not based on one issue only!
Even if I'm being a meanie and poking bears right left and center!!!!😹3 -

northern virginia and the large cities are much more liberal. Southern and western virginia (the Appalachia region in general, regardless of state) is very conservative.1 -

I am a rock and water lover....and though I live very close to the banks of a great lake, and on land that was once beneath its waters. I still feel a bit too far since industry has filled up so much of the water's edge.

Do you think driving such distances makes your hamsters think that they have exercised a lot and need extra feed? I always feel like that on road trips. Somehow the quickly passing scenery is registering the "fact" that I am running really quickly for a very long time and need to be fed well!2 -
