I'm shifting focus to October. I'm definitely frustrated with how 2021 has gone overall for me - lowest weight ever in mid-February, only to regress almost 40 freakin lbs, and now birthday/holidays/year-end loom once more. I need some new inspiration and motivation, and maybe a less aggressive approach to exercise. My morning routines have been going well, at least. Very much looking forward to sweater weather and the point at which I really need a sweatshirt for my morning walk.
October is a great time for re-setting things. The cooler weather is great for moving more! I think that you need to take a serious look at your diet "settings" though. Exercise does not solve it all - you need to cut back on the intake every day and try to find the sweet spot where you can lose a pound a week. It is not fast, but it is easily sustained. I'm sure there is some room for cutting back on some foods and upping the vegetables to make up some bulk. You have to get back to that beautiful February point and go on from there!6 -
Hi friends! I’ve been less than 💯 since getting my booster and flu shot on Sunday. But I know it’s only temporary and every day is better. I’m one of those lucky people who had their lymph node in their armpit get swollen. Just feels like I have a big rock 🪨 in my armpit and I want to just keep my hand on my hips or it hurts. I’m sure it will be better by week’s end. Had it after #2 as well.
@conleywoods Love 💕 the 7 foot 🦖 How fun!!!! Let us know what you learn with WW. I hit lifetime years ago but haven’t been back anytime lately with their new program.
@Steph1498 So funny the things you find and see. I like your musings about both the tiny ship and the shopping cart. Maybe someone was planning to fill the cart 🛒 with produce from those fields. Also, on my walk today—the ship has sailed! To where?🤷🏻♀️Or how?🤷🏻♀️
@jugar Glad you are back in your happy place. Thanks again for all you do every month (week and day) keeping F2F up and rolling. I so appreciate it and this group. I’m not leaving this team.
@Terytha So sorry to hear your marriage has hit a rough patch. As someone married at 19 and with my husband for 39 years now, it is NOT easy. Lots of ups and downs. Hoping that you and your husband can talk this out and figure out what is best moving forward. Hugs to you!
@YinxFed Your afternoon sounds lovely. Good for you.
@Kali225 Hugs to you too. I know it’s frustrating to gain back pounds you’ve lost 🙋🏻♀️, but you are still here and committed and I know you’ve got this.
@ashleycarole86 Do I still have time to turn in my steps from last week?5 -
You bet @micki48 ... send them my way and I'll make sure they're included. Thanks! (And feel better soon...)1

@jugar - thank you very much for the advice and experience! I really appreciate it!! I'll try to implement some of those ideas! (And look up the Mediterranean diet to see if it's something I can achieve with a mini fridge and a microwave).
@Steph1498 - that you very much for the podcast suggestion! I'll have to see if I can get it on my computer as my potato android phone didn't want to send me the link.
I have no awesome pictures (I loved seeing all the interesting finds!) but I did see a fox on the highway when I was driving back to the motel from the hydro station!6 -
@bonnie_red I always see the best scenery on my drive to plant, and I have the internal debate of pulling over and taking a picture or keep going. So far I've just kept going.
At the gym yesterday, there was a one mile run for time - I ran a mile in 8:17, I'm so pleased! Next time I'm going to try to get it under 8 minutes, but it's nice to see that I'm getting faster 😁6 -
@jugar Oh yes! I need a less junk food challenge for sure. I think the WW is a great start because it limits how much room I have for that stuff. Unfortunately I have become really good at budgeting plenty of calories for chips, chocolate, coffee and pumpkin pie...oh my. It fits in the budget but I don't want to eat that way.3

I also want to let you and everyone know that next month we are running a full month challenge to cut out the CRAP in our diets - Carbonated drinks (except seltzer, I hope!), Refined sugars, Artificial food, Processed food. I'm sure there will be a range of definitions on some of those, but it will be a good time to spend the month keeping to a more whole foods diet.
I've participated, not altogether successfully, with the Quit Sugar challenge. I wished I'd done what another member did which was to keep a tally of success days and succumb days...I'll do that for October. It was good for me to have the challenge in the back of my head through the month -made me much more aware and everyone had their own standards - for me I didn't make any particular effort to curb natural sugars, heck, the tomatoes are still coming!
Going for the whole foods is a great idea -less chance of c.r.a.p. sneaking in there. Another tip that might freshen up your palate/menu is to buy things you've never cooked before - someone gave me my first ever chayote the other day from her garden - used it in a stir fry the other night-good. I might try to grow next year. Another thing I tried from her is celtuce - a hybrid veg with an unusual, kind of nutty, taste to add to a salad. I've already got seeds for next year.
Try Kohlrabi, Bok Choy, Taro, Hubbard squash, etc...just buy it and THEN research how to serve it I like to do that in the meat dept too..whatever is on sale/marked down...I'll try cooking it...have discovered some keeper recipes that way. And does anyone else feel like food prices have gone UP lately? sheesh, stew beef used to be the cheapest thing going and it's not.

@Kali225 – big congrats as well for meeting your new pledge target every day this week!6 -
@kali225 I feel your frustration. I was so on it, until I wasn't! You'll get there, I'm sure - that almost 40lbs has come off before so it can come off again.I also want to let you and everyone know that next month we are running a full month challenge to cut out the CRAP in our diets - Carbonated drinks (except seltzer, I hope!), Refined sugars, Artificial food, Processed food. I'm sure there will be a range of definitions on some of those, but it will be a good time to spend the month keeping to a more whole foods diet.
In the space of 60 seconds I've gone from 'that's not for me' to 'I could maybe do it a few lunch times a week'. I do definitely need to cut my caffeine free, diet Coke habit back down, and I still have a lot of the RAP too. We do cook from scratch as much as we can and the extra freezer space will really help with that, so even if I can't cut the CRAP completely, I think it'll be reduced quite a lot. The danger is the sides - e.g. bread with stew - so I'll need to find some alternatives.
Side note, something that's helped me a lot this month (even when tracking/control wasn't going so well) was the no late night snacking challenge: https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10842596/no-late-night-snacking-sept-2021-challenge I've not been eating after 9pm and it's helped me cut 150-300 calories that I would've otherwise eaten most days.
Dad arrived from Dubai yesterday so we've spent some time catching up (around working, boo!). We're having big juicy rib eye steaks tonight, but one fits into my calorie goal, though potentially not on my plate. Dad's quarantining and can't leave the house before Monday at the earliest, so there's less temptation to go for lots of meals out, plus September was an expensive month for us and none of us are pushing for takeaways.
Going for a proper run tonight with a friend. The weather is sunny but windy, so we'll take advantage and try to do the 10K, bodies permitting. My back is healing now - I saw the nurse yesterday - so that shouldn't be a limiting factor at least. I get paid tomorrow and will then order a couple more of the new sports bra I found; I'm not going back to my Shock Absorber ones for a long time in case they set the cyst off again. I always have more winter running/training gear than summer, as I try to avoid using the tumble dryer but air drying takes so long.
I've lost 1kg since Monday, I feel like my focus is back and whilst I'm still quite stressed, I've a lot to be excited about too. Now that Dad has arrived, and we KNOW my husband is joining the police, I can relax/act out the plans rather than thinking 'what if?' all the time and winding myself up.6 -
It was cool to see myself on leaderboards though I feel like I probably don't deserve it, dang weight is fluctuating all over the place. Slowly getting back into the routine of things, trying to get back to eating less sugar and have decided to start intermittent fasting again. I see the doctor tomorrow for my shoulder injury so I'm optimistic I'll be able to get back into stuff I've been missing: gardening and beat saber
CW: 221.67 -
Our concert was canceled. So we're not going to Vegas after all.
On the plus side, I will be making Thanksgiving dinner since we'll be home. I do enjoy cooking a big meal now and then.
And I finally, finally might be moving away from sales at work. We're testing something and if all goes well then in a week I'll be able to hire a mini-me, someone I can train to be my backup in all the many disparate things I do in a day. Then maybe that person can take over sales for me.
I've been in sales for 6 years. I'm good at it now, but it has never become any less stressful. Especially now that I'm the only one.7 -
Wonderful Wednesday news!
@eggfreak
I love your idea about just buying some odd vegetable or other thing and then you're "forced" to find a recipe and try it out. I enjoy my daily recipes that are in very heavy rotation, but it is time to try something new. I'm also going to check out chayote and celtuce and see if they would grow up here - trying new seeds is always exciting.
The October no c.r.a.p. challenge is going to be a good one to dive into, I think. As you say, it is not necessary to be perfect every day! Keep score on yourself with how many days you kept off of each thing and you will have a nice scorecard by the end of the month. Aim for more days of eliminating the stuff than of having it, and it will be a win.
@DD265
It sounds like things are on an upswing! DH job, DOD (dear old dad, not Department of Defence!) visit, running, new sports bras - fantastic. Keep us inspired with news like that
@AshenMoon
Fluctuations are a drag, but it sounds like you are making plans and getting going with some good tools. IF can be a big boost especially at first - and cutting back on sugar does help, even though it can be hard to do.
@Terytha
I have to say, I'm glad you won't have to go through all the crazy stress of travel to Las Vegas, even though the concert probably would have been a blast. And cooking a big dinner is pretty wonderful too. Your work situation sounds like it is looking up a lot - stressful tasks all day every day really wear you down. Good news!
HUGE congrats to all the steppers and exercisers keeping track on our team! Getting that kind of high mileage with a small team is impressive. I'll be back to tracking next month, so sign me up when the October spreadsheet is ready, @ashleycarole86 Hmmm. I guess that means I had better get to work on the October spreadsheet7 -
@jugar sorry. Morning started off crazy and I didn't weigh in.
I did workout though. I was just thinking I really need a solid reset for Oct. I have been gaining and losing the same few pounds since May. I know I need to clean up my diet- cut out the pasta and bread to get the scale to permanently move. I am doing really well with increasing my veggies but I need to cut out the processed carbs.6 -
Hi everyone. Started the day with 16 minutes of Pilates. It was a hip and back stretch workout. I wasn't sure I could get through it, but felt so much better after I did it. Still taking it a bit easy today, but feeling more myself.
Need to get my food logged for dinner, but the rest is in. I have not been weighing myself at all, so I have no idea where I am. Hopefully, I'll see another little loss this week. Also hoping I get a walk in yesterday. Probably will. I have the little one tomorrow. We'll have to go out looking for Halloween decorations. There are actually some up already.
I'm hoping October is my month for some good losses too. I have wanted to try some new veggies too. I am going to try some new recipes as well. My husband make an amazing carrot, raisin, coconut, nut bread today. We realized today that he has been making this recipe for over 30 years.
@Terytha Sorry to hear about your trip, but glad to hear that your job may be improving. Here's hoping all goes well.

That was from the other day - better on the day of than too late to count.
I’ve had a couple of very slow days but hope to turn it around in Montpelier tomorrow. I’ll be accompanying a friend (she’s driving, not me, yet) to her MD appointment. It beats staying home while the water is due to be off from 8-5:00!
I’m enjoying the bigger computer so far. Once the wedding season calms down, Emily will work her magic on it. Thank you!5 -

Today's exercise:
12677 steps
This included walking a 9 hole round of golf.. season is wrapping up soon! Going out again for more fun on Saturday
So glad to have you back on the step team for October @jugar ... will post when we start October introductions for anyone else that wants to join but the more the merrier!
Exhausted... time for bed! See you bright and early for weigh-in.2 -
It's a chilly one today. I stood outside briefly whilst the new freezer was delivered and it felt very fresh (in a good way!) but that's less fun inside when you're stuck behind a desk. I've put the heating on for the first time since Spring, if we ignore the plumber's test when the boiler was changed.
@eggfreak, @jugar, we're also guilty of cycling through the same recipes. Before summer we were quite good at trying something new once a week (almost always on a weekend) but because we had a busy social life that went by the by. I have a new air fryer cook book downstairs that I've not looked through, plus OH bought us ~40 cook books on HumbleBundle - I'd share the link but it's finished unfortunately. Finding recipes to try, and actually cooking them, are two very different things of course!
Went running yesterday... Was great to catch up with my friend as we hadn't run together all month, and we did a full 10K without stopping. Changed the route slightly to incorporate an extra hill at the beginning, rather than running round the village at the end. Somehow, we came in at only 21 seconds slower than my 10K PB. It wasn't really hard, but I could tell I hadn't done a run like that in months - over the summer we were stopping regularly for a drink even if we did the distance - and I need to re-condition my feet and legs to that amount of concussion. I'm not going to specifically aim for the next run this week to be a 10k because it took a lot out of me. I might be dead on my feet today, but I'm dead chuffed, too.6 -

Just read an article last night about high glycemic foods - I don't think I've ever seen this subject before...to do with carbohydrates, sugars spikes and how it all reacts in cells and hunger pangs... Anyhow, here I was feeling good about my oatmeal but now know that the instant oats, which are so quick and easy, are high gylcemic whereas if I switch to steel cut oats it would be much better. Will give it a go and see if I feel any different...more satiated?5 -

I feel stuck at this weight. My first goal has always been 143. I will reach that goal by the end of the month. I am going to sit down this weekend and make a 2 week meal plan without pasta and bread. I want make a plan for the entire family. I usually make a plan with a pizza or spaghetti night and then I plan to eat something different, and then don't. This time, I am going to focus on healthy family recipes that we can all enjoy.7 -

Excellent weigh-ins! @eggfreak with a solid 1 pound per week for the month, @ashleycarole86 with a whopping 11 pounds for the month, @KellyBgetsfit hanging in there is better than gaining, right?
If you have gained this month, right now is the perfect time to learn from those numbers, figure out what you could work on in October, and make a plan. It does not have to be perfection! Just pick something doable, and try to stick with it for more days than you don't.
The glycemic index is a great guide to what might cause cravings, fluctuations, elevated heart rate, etc. Thanks for the reminder about that @eggfreak - keep us posted on what feels different about steel cut oats. They are also quite processed, but lower on the index for sure. Personally, I find all oats give me the racing heart for an hour or so and I keep away from them except on the coldest mornings of mid-winter.
I'm looking forward to re-calibrating in October as well. I'll be back on the regular team for at least one month since I have gone over the top of my "goal zone" range for 2 weeks in a row. That kicks me back into the regular team until it is gone! I am aiming to get much closer to the bottom of my 5-pound range before heading back to maintenance. I have been very sloppy for the past couple of months, and it shows

Wow @eggfreak , @KellyBgetsfit , and @ashleycarole86 , those are some great losses!
I'm struggling a bit, trying to balance working full time, school, the gym, and eating healthy. I find the healthy eating is the first ball to drop. The covid situation where I'm living is spiralling out of control. So my brain keeps going to those quick solutions - eat the delicious bad food that'll give me that quick hit of dopamine. I'd rather turn to the gym but my body is already falling apart - injuries and genetics have led to arthritis that is flaring up in my hands especially (I'm only in my early thirties!). So when I exercise, I do get those endorphins, but then I also get pain that really drags my mood down. So I turn to food.
I guess I'm just really tired and tired of being in pain. And I'm trying not to think of weight-loss as a battle but it seems like I'm always fighting it and myself. Which is discouraging because I'm already so tired 😩. But my contract is down at the end of October (which I'm actually very sad about), so things will change then.6 -
Hi WA's You have another new member heading your way ... Please welcome @mocchaeyes79613

Following @KellyBgetsfit 's lead, I pulled out the cookbooks today. Making a meal plan for all of October, which is very goal-focused - I have 30 days until my birthday, and I feel my 20s flying by! (I'll be 27). What kind of gift can I craft for MYSELF in terms of health in the next 30 days?
Some things on the recipe list - homemade pico de gallo with scrambled eggs and avocado for lunch, an amazing Caesar salad recipe with kale that my sister made a few weekends ago, slow cooker spanish meatballs, and my absolute favorite fall food - maple-roasted squash salad with apple, walnuts, and sage. Going to be lots of calorie math for the new items but I am very excited by this growing list.
@jugar @micki48 @DD265 thanks for the support/notes on the yo-yoing. I really want to get the shed going, and I can very clearly point to food choices for why that is NOT happening. I think I am going to try to go no-exercise aside walking for the the first 2 weeks of Oct and purely focus on intake.
On a random note, I am vaguely considering a half marathon in the spring of 2022. I can't tell you where this thought came from. But it is there.6 -
