Hello.

Hi Team!
… Several months ago, @Be_theBest_Me noticed that I seem to binge every Wednesday. I didn't think much about it, but she is totally right. I have NO CLUE what is up about Wednesday, but I do. … It is part of the learning process and something I must figure out.
I am looking for low cal dessert alternatives. I have an incredible sweet tooth that I cannot seem to manage. All suggestions are appreciated!!
It’s so interesting to find patterns in the MFP data. It can be so rewarding to learn more about the underlying problem. Now that you are aware of it, it will be much easier to solve the problem or undo a bad habit and replace it with a better one. For managing my sweet tooth, I’ve found fruit works well for me. If it’s just a sweet craving, I’ll sometimes warm up apple sauce and sprinkle cinnamon on it. If I feel low on energy in the afternoon, I sometimes have fruit (pineapple, strawberry, banana, kiwi, peach) and add a couple of tablespoons of Greek yogurt. To make it feel a little more special, I’ll layer fruit and yogurt in a ‘fancy’ or fun glass and sprinkle walnuts on top.
For snacks, I like vanilla yogurt covered raisins, plain raisins, a few slices of dried mango, dates (occasionally rolled in coconut), or a small handful of chocolate covered nuts. I’ve gradually cut down on my dessert by replacing higher calorie ice cream with some of the items mentioned above. We’ll sometimes buy the no sugar Klondike bars, or sorbet. Lately, I’ve been enjoying a delicious ‘green sorbet’ made from pineapple, passion fruit, kale and spinach. Frozen fruit bars (similar to popsicles) can be a nice summer treat, too.
I realized that my habit of eating dessert came from childhood, when we would usually have dessert after dinner. Instead of dessert, I’ve found a cup of chai or mint/ peppermint tea can satisfy me just as much as dessert. In the winter, I also like a cup of low or no sugar hot chocolate. The mindful feeling as I sip on the tea is relaxing to me, and fulfills that ‘social need’ or expectation for food and/or drink as a part of ‘community fellowship’ when we share special time with family and friends. I like to incorporate active times with family and friends - like walking together or sharing fun experiences- instead of typical gifts or celebrations, too. For me, it helps to find replacement foods or activities instead of feeling as though I’m resisting or giving up something special. I can replace it with something else that is special to me rather than feeling deprived.
I’ll watch for other ideas from the group and hope you find something that works for you!5 -

Why do so few of the new members of the team ever actually get around to posting their weekly weights? Did they leave MFP? Gain weight and are too embarrassed to post? Did they forget that they joined the group? Theories? I am always pleased to see new members joining and then disappointed that so many of them are never heard from again. I would make such a bad moderator, as I would find that so frustrating to deal with. Kudos to the nice moderators!

@chublet25 - I hadn’t noticed that many new members don’t get around to posting but I’m interested in figuring out how we can support them through the ‘initiation’ phase. Maybe we could ‘friend’ new members to welcome them and encourage participation? What do other group members think contributes to a sense of identity or belonging in a particular group? My guess is that part of the difficulty is building new habits of participation … that eventually lead to a sense of belonging over time but that are tough to get started on … much like strengthening healthy habits for eating and daily activity/ movement.
I support a lot of groups as part of the work I do and we find that about 1-5% emerge as leaders, 5-10% form the core group, 25-30% serve as regular visitors who influence the group or key advisors with some type of authority or expertise to contribute. The remaining group members either learn from the periphery and gradually enter the group or lose interest. In my experience, the level of participation depends on whether they join the group to learn a new topic or skill, influence the agenda, contribute on a related topic that’s not central to the purpose of the group, improve a skill that they want to hone in order to make a difference, etc. So, it’s not too surprising to learn about the pattern you noticed … but I agree it can get discouraging or frustrating for the leaders.
I’ll try to pay better attention and encourage new members. Thanks for sharing your observation so we can try to improve our team ‘persistence’ rate … and I second your shout out to the moderators and other leaders!! 🙌
@TheMrWobbly and @bionicpuffy - Any loss is a win! As someone moving at a VERY slow rate of loss, it looks like major progress to me. I try to remind myself that we lose at a slower rate the closer we move to our goal weight. It will likely take me about a month to shed 1.5 pounds but I definitely plan to get there at some point. 🥳Congratulations on the loss and keep up the great work. Go Shrinking Assets!5 -

I obviously can’t speak for others, but based on my experience of once joining a different weight loss challenge/team here on MFP, here were my reasons for failing to actually show up:
- after joining, I found the rules and practices of the group were too complicated and I didn’t have the energy to figure them out
- I had joined on a ”maybe this will give me a push of motivation” type of whim - these groups will not give you that push, at least not initially. You need to be motivated to begin with.
- I had no prior connection to anyone in that group
Compared to this, I had actually formed a connection with Beka beforehand through the open forums and chatted with her a little, so there was the added pressure of not letting down the person who personally invited me to the team Based on my experience, if we wanted to really make sure all the newcomers stick with us and find their place in the team, maybe we could consider assigning a ”team buddy” to everyone to make sure they know what they’re supposed to be doing with weigh-ins and to have someone to chat with about their struggles. It would be a lot of work and require lots of volunteers, though.3 -
Our refrigerator/freezer combo died in the garage. It was over twenty years old. So we took some meat across the street to my aunt, and stuffed the rest into the downstairs fridge/freezer. The ice cream all melted. I ate extra stuff to make more room. We will be short on room for a week as things thaw and need to be used. Hope my resistance to extra food gets better!

Hey Everyone,
I was way off the rails this weekend. I think the stress of the week just bubbled up and the perceived "freedom" of a holiday weekend sent me into F*#K it mode.
Today is a new day, I am getting my head back in the game and wanted to post real quick to be accountable to this group.

Argh, first day back in front of a classroom in a year and a half! Why didn't I get my hair cut so I didn't TOTALLY look like a crazy woman???7 -
@Anniesquats100 - I’m sorry to hear about your broken freezer. It’s a good thing you noticed quickly so you could make sure the contents didn’t spoil!
@Angelic843 and @Be_theBest_Me - Every day is a new opportunity to be the person we are each striving to be. Good for you, putting the past in the past and moving forward with a fresh outlook! We’re all learning more about ourselves and making adjustments along the way. Let’s have a great week!
@chublet25 - Recently, I had to wait a long time for a haircut appointment because my usual stylist moved locations. When I showed up for my appointment, I said: “I’m open to any style, I’m just trying not to look like an old hippy.” The general response was: “What’s wrong with that?.” I guess they’re right that the image of promoting peace and love is not the worst look! ☮️✌🏼💜😘 So, I say embrace the crazy during crazy times! Who knows, it might make your students more comfortable showing up to class when they are not feeling like it … and you can wow them with your new look after the first day energy weans. 🤩 How did you feel about the wardrobe choices you made after gathering suggestions from the MFP crowd? Have a great semester and thank you for the work you do!4 -

Trying to just stop gaining at this point. Stopped eatings sugar 9/1, logging all my food, and have consistently been exercising. Next step is now to start shaving off my daily calories. Ugh. It's a slow slog and really hard to not hate myself with the slow progress (gained around 20lbs in the last six months, now it's gonna take years to get it back off it seems).5 -

You are totally right and you've hit on a big stumbling block for me-- wanting to see IMMEDIATE and RAPID results, when the fact of the matter is slow and steady is the way to go.
On a different note, after at least a week of no snacking between meals, I failed spectacularly today and had a bunch of delicious halloween candy. Phooey!
On yet ANOTHER note, does anyone here want to be an accountability buddy? I'd like someone to have a daily check in with via email or MFP message or similar.3 -

You can do it! They say that slow and steady loss produces the best long-term success. I know, I know, I should heed my own advice. It's hard! But worth it.2 -

I bought some patterned blouses and am wearing long thin cardigans over them to disguise my spare tire! That's the plan. Screw the shapewear (sounds uncomfortable anyway!) Straight-leg trousers. I always wear Vibram 5-finger toe shoes (they are like gloves for feet) but people don't look at one's feet so I feel like that's weirdness I can get away with. But thanks a lot for your response, I love to embrace the crazy. That's hilarious! My class looks to be populated with good people and I think we'll have a lot of fun (such a relief!)3
