@JOE - Nice job pushing it! But I know what you mean. Going through that too.

Happy Friday again, folks! I'm off on my road trip today, but will check in and update each day as I'm able, but it might be pretty random times.

Hi guys, I'm having a great time in Africa. I'm finding it hard to do measureable moving but I've managed to record 4 miles so far, which included a hike into the hills today. I'm at a lodge with WiFI tonight so I thought I would pop in. Tomorrow we head into a national park for a game drive and there may not be internet for the next couple of days. Take care! Dave, enjoy your trip.6 -

August is my anniversary. It was 9 years ago that I joined this group. In that time, there were many on here that have moved on. And yet Dave and Janet have remained faithful in recording our stats for us. Many here joined at the same time or shortly after me.
I truly believe fitness pal and this group have helped me to remain on my path to living healthy. I have had some downward moments when I fell off the bike so to speak and have gotten back on and started over. My weight spirals would always be gaining more than I lost each time. I originally started out at 210 pounds Thankfully, I never saw that number ever again.
I ran my first race ever while on here at the 59. Janet and some other runners were such encouragers and gave me good advice. Who would think I would pick an adventure race where I kayaked 2 miles, biked 20 and ran a 5k. as my first race. Most people would be training for a 5k. I guess it was go big or go home.
Only days after that race while still living on that high, did I have a scare with what could be the beginning of breast cancer. Praise God that I have been clear ever since. My oncologist told me that losing weight was the best thing I could have done as estrogen feeds on fat and breast cancer feeds on estrogen.
From there ai ran a 10k and was training for my first half marathon. The day after my 60th birthday, one of my students ran into me while playing in their Physical Education class and tore my left meniscus. My running went on hold and I had surgery in March to fix it. I was about to quite teaching as therapy was not working and found a PT who use to oversee Pittsburgh’s marathon. He not only helped me, but prepared me for my second adventure race, From there I ran a few more small races, two 10 milers and 3 half marathons.
Then my dad’s health was declining so running was put on the back burner. He moved in with my hubby and I until he went to his heavenly home just before Covid hit.
I spiraled into some deep grief and found my weight gain rising again, but during Covid lost the weight. Through a second torn meniscus recovery and some major Peraformis Syndrome from lifting my dad, the clouds have cleared and I continue to walk faithfully and am actually picking up some bike and running miles again. No more races from me, I am so grateful to go out and run and not worry if my time was good or bad. I do it for the joy. I will do a virtual 5k this September for a gal that died of cancer just shy of her 20th birthday. She personallly has raised over 1.5 million dollars to fight children’s cancer, They have just funded a lab for her particular cancer. She decided that if the government was not going to fund more money for children’s csncer she would do something about it, Her parents and sister are continuing her mission.
I say all this to encourage and thank many of you for being there through the ups and downs. Aside from my Lord and Savior and my husband, this group has meant a lot to me in keeping me accountable, And fitness pal, calories do as well when I feel a need to see where my calories are going. I know if I leave the group, I have an excuse not to continue working out. No matter how big or little the distance, Keep moving.
Don’t give up, don’t quit. Exercise is so important and as I told my dad quite frequently, “If you stop moving, you rust.” My joints never hurt so much as sitting on the couch all day. You have one body and it’s up to you to make it last until it’s time to finally let it rest. Yes eventually, it will fail, but it doesn’t have to be sooner than necessary. God bless each of you as your continue on your journey.
