    Hello all,
I hope you have good plans for today.
This morning I have to work a little bit for work, do chores, prepare for the holidays (we are leaving tomorrow afternoon). This afternoon strength session. Tonight will be resting evening with my son, it will only be the 2 of us, my husband has hockey training and my other son will be at a friend's house.

When I have such an easy evening I simply make steamed veggies and potatoes usually. Sometimes rice.
Therefore I made a more consistent breakfast, hum ;)

Good morning! I'm Sam, I've just joined the group and caught up on the chat. I resonate with much of what Maya & Eva say, perhaps because we're of a similar age/weight and facing the same body battles! I feel I eat pretty healthy options but my portion sizes are probably what's pushing my weight up, I'm hopeful that logging daily again will remind me not to overload my plate!

Hope your recovery is going well Marilyn and like your last message, your inner strength will pull you through! You have some great inspirational posts.

Well, it's Saturday morning & day one of re-embracing a lifestyle change. I've become quite sedentary recently, due to increased workload (desk job) and my aging dog who walks at a snails pace means my daily walks now feel like daily shuffles!

I used to do yoga and walking workouts daily. I stopped when I had joint issues and haven't restarted. That will change today! I'm going to put a YouTube video on and get a workout done before breakfast everyday this week and see how I get on. I used to prefer an evening workout but now feel like once I start my normal day, so much stuff gets in the way of exercise. So maybe starting off with exercise will give me less obstructions and excuses!

    Have a great day everyone!

Hi Sam, welcome to the group! I just sent you a friend request. My diary is open 95% of the time, I only close it when I’m momentarily embarrassed 🙈.

I was in a similar spot at the beginning of August, when I started to work out and track my diet. Being middle aged and having more responsibilities makes it harder than being 32 (the last time I lost weight). My stress levels are higher, time is more limited, and I’m often pretty tired in the evening. I am also having to be a bit more careful with my body. I used to do a lot of yoga, but stopped after busting my rotator cuff twice in 5 years, in incidents unrelated to yoga. Currently I go to the gym and lift weight three times a week. Still feeling out what feels good and what will stick long term: it will be some mix of weight lifting, jogging, swimming, yoga, and maybe going to try pilates. While I enjoy all of these, I currently don’t have a lot if time, so I’ll have to pick among them. I also exercise when I can, right now, it’s after work and on the weekends. I’m down 10 pounds and am less jiggly, so making progress.

@Marilynsretired I hope you’re recovering and am keeping you in my thoughts 🫂🫂🫂.

Thanks for adding me! I know what you mean about sharing diaries, I'm as honest as possible with it - I'm 45 too and got to the point where I realise none of us are perfect & if I have a rubbish day then I'm still happy to log it and move on. MFP is my only method of accountability as I both work & workout from home only.

I'm convinced the peri-meni is doing a number on our joints & really hope it's something that mends over time. My wrists, knees, toes and ankles feel like they're 90 yrs old at times!

My last big push for weight loss was for my 40th & I worked out twice daily and felt great. I couldn't sustain that when we moved house though and DIY renovations took over, followed by the lockdowns. However......I absolutely LOVE loads of the clothes I bought during that period and I'm determined to get back into them! I'm about 150lb at the mo, hopeful to get back to 135-140lb. Doesn't sound much but it takes longer to shift these days hey?!!

@Curvykinkycurls, I hope you may find - as I definitely did - that losing weight does reduce joint pain. Even small losses can help, though it takes a bit of time for the effect of the reduced impact/stress to kick in.

Also, unless a person knows all is well, I'd encourage anyone experiencing joint stiffness as years roll on to ask their doctor for a thyroid test. My severe hypothyroidism's first symptoms were joint stiffness and flagging energy.

I also find that the stronger and more active I can be - while avoiding actual injury - the less joint pain I have, though there again progress has been gradual. Possibly it's because the muscles better support the joints? I don't know. In many ways, I actually feel physically younger now at 67 than I did at 45, honestly.

@AnnPT77 -- Oof, I totally agree. The faux meat does not taste very good in my estimation, I'd much rather have a straight veg option. It's interesting you picked up on the trend in restaurants--I hadn't thought about that.

That's a really good point @AnnPT77 - my mum has thyroid issues but I'd chalked joint pain entirely down to my age/menopause. It's a good shout to get tested as so many of the symptoms are the same & I have weight gain/brain fog/palpitations, so now you mention it, its worth the blood test, thanks!

It's very inspiring to hear how you turned your life/diet/body composition around in your late 40s by the way. Having started yesterday feeling bleugh with no energy, it really made me feel like it was totally possible to start again. A good old kick up the bum!! Haha 😄 We all need one from time to time!

@Curvykinkycurls - do you have a good Dr.? Some of your symptoms sound like long Covid, too (assuming you had Covid).

I am also only 10-15 lbs above where I want to be and am taking things relatively slowly to let my body adjust to increased exercise. Hopefully your overall health will improve with better routine and ideal weight (hoping the same for myself).

How you doing @Marilynsretired ? Hope recovery is going well.

After months and months (and months) of not exercising I can confirm the DOMS has been pretty full-on! There I was, thinking I was taking it slowly (day on, day off, basic YouTube workouts) but my goodness - ouch!!! 😄😂

Tomorrow I was due to meet my SILs to start swimming weekly together, but they've had other plans and had to delay till next week. I'm in two minds, to go alone and hope I can swim through the muscle aches (it could help? Of it could give me cramp?) Or maybe a walk & yoga session would be better. I'll see how the day goes & decide.

Happy Halloween to you all, hope there's been no sugary temptations! No trick or treaters in our area so it's been a regular day here, but I'm looking forward to buying lots of discounted pumpkins and squashes tomorrow!! 🎃

    Happy Halloween! 🎃 👻

@Curvykinkycurls Ah, DOMS…in my experience, it gets better once you get moving.

On an unrelated note, it’s almost November. I‘ll be joining another round of the Ultimate Accountability Challenge (UAC) Group…in case anyone wants to check it out. I find it quite helpful. It’s a monthly group with daily check-ins. The goal is to be accountable with daily exercise, tracking, and calorie goals.

@henridw2095 : I'll be at the UAC, too. My first time, hope to build some better habits. Looking forward to the challenge!

@Curvykinkycurls : I hear ya about DOMS--maybe a little movement is better than none with that stuff. Yoga might be just the thing.

7.45am session was available so I went for it on my own! My heart feels like it's had the best workout for a long time! I pushed myself and swam breaststroke the whole session without a break, so I'm just hoping I won't suffer the consequences tomorrow 😂 Three weddings to attend next year, so that's another big motivation to shift some lbs and like they say, summer bodies are made in winter! 💪

@Curvykinkycurls : So awesome! Glad you had a good workout!

Hey everyone--a question...is there a vegan butter you prefer to use? Can you use it to cook/bake with? I live in the states if that makes a difference.

I have not tried any vegan butter yet, but feel like I want to get it into my life. Just don't know if one brand tastes better than another, lol. Thanks!

@Red_B1rd I've only tried Flora plant b+tter, which can be used for cooking/frying/baking etc. It seems to be ok for all my purposes so far, but I don't use it much to be honest. Apparently Kroger stock it in the states.

@Red_B1rd I use earth balance vegan buttery stick, but admittedly don’t bake a lot. Supposedly it works.

I have a skepticism about faux-whatever products. I just bake and cook with oil. Sometimes that requires adjusting other ingredients. Type of oil depends on how I'm using it.

ETA: For some purposes, coconut oil works best, since it's a solid at room temperature.

Hello Sam, nice to meet you !
How is it so far to “re-embrace a lifestyle change” ?
Swimming is THE best in my opinion 😉. How do you feel today after your swim of yesterday ?
@henridw2095 , waiting for you to go as well !

Tracking and exercising are the easy parts for me. I don’t really care about how my journal looks. Sometimes it is 100g peanut butter or chocolate and... well I prefer to be honest with myself ahah.
However, going down on calories is very difficult for me. I stopped binging this year and during that process I had to stop restricting so now I need to find the balance between eating less and this feeling of restriction. I have come to accept myself with some kilos more and I am in maintenance but since September I am just over my upper limit and I want to do something about it. But like you say Sam, it takes more time than before. That’s OK.

I am just back from a 5 day trip with friends and I ate way too much processed food and cheese (and even once fish). Next party is on 10th of November so until then I want to follow a WFPB diet and eat a little less. And also sleep more. It should be feasible.

How you doing @Marilynsretired ? I hope the surgery had the expected result ?

It has now been just over a week since surgery on my arm. Surgeon said the surgery itself went well, now to see if my body will accept the fisquala - it takes between 3 to 6 months for it to be completely ready - it did not work on my other arm so am praying this one does. It is giving me funny sensations - but they say it is because it is healing and feeling this way because it is from the wrist going up my arm about 3 inches - really need it to work as the next option is not so nice.

    Hi there,
Well funny is better than pain. I guess.
And for the rest, how are you doing ?

Your cartoon is appropriate. I did a power nap today and I had slept 10 hours. But 5 days partying with friends left some marks :D
I will go early to bed again tonight.

I had a good day, also food wise. There is a storm in my country and it was not possible to exercise outside so I did a long strength session.

Hi @Maya440 👋 sounds like an epic week! It's so hard to stay on track when socialising/partying! Well done for maintaining and adopting healthier habits, once the parties are out of the way I bet you will get back to your goal weight in no time, you sound like you have a good plan.

Ive got sore shoulders after swimming yesterday. I know I pushed myself though so I expected some aches. I'm going to try and get to the pool once a week. Problem is I found it a bit boring swimming in circuits/lanes. Does anyone use waterproof headphones? It would be great to listen to an audiobook, but I've no idea if they work. Any recommendations if so?

We were hit by storm ciaron today too and had power cuts most of the day. I enjoyed a rest day & a tech free day though. It was good to have some R&R! Hope you're all safe & well.

    Hello everyone!

@Marilynsretired wishing you that it will work out the way you hope. 🙏

@Maya440 glad you’re back! I saw a few workouts in the last few days, great job staying on track.

@Curvykinkycurls nice you managed to enjoy the day despite loss of power.

My day was relatively uneventful, just the usual work related busyness. My food scale broke as I was weighing my morning snack (worked from home this morning to let maintenance in)…it started to show random numbers and changing the battery didn’t fix it. Ordered a replacement I may have had my eyes on from Amazon and it was delivered by 4 pm. The incident has opened my eyes how much I‘ve started to rely on the tracking in the last few months. I still did ok for lunch though, eyeballing a portion of khichdi with zucchini, a dish I‘ve cooked and weighed dozens of times.

This week is busy for me, I might only fit two gym sessions in this week (Monday and Saturday, when I‘ll also consider a dip in the pool). But I had PT on Tuesday, did an exercise video yesterday, and will minimally do PT homework tonight, but might add an exercise video. It’s sort of silly, but I‘m enjoying some of the Jillian Michaels videos for a quick workout.

I managed to meal prep yesterday evening after running out of precooked food. Khichdi with zucchini and kale/farro radicchio salad with fairy dust (vegan parmesan). Enough to get me to Sunday when I will meal prep again.

I have tried waterproof headphones but didn't like it. First I had way too many things on my face (glasses, nose plugs and now headphones) . Then the sound varies from when the head is inside the water and outside the water and it felt strange.

What I do is I use training plans. I found them on https://www.natationpourtous.com/entrainement/plans-entrainement.php (sorry in French I am sure there are plenty English alternatives). When I follow a plan, I never find it boring.

I also use the scale at almost every meals. Nice you could have a new one so quickly !!

Today will be busy for me. I work in the morning (and I should get going), in the afternoon I'm off to the hairdresser's (it takes almost 3 hours to colour my new gray hair ahah) and tonight I'm planning to go spinning.

    Excellent day !
First spinning class since last winter. I had forgotten how hard it is.

I was happy for a calm weekend at home but we have just been invited at a birthday party tomorrow evening and to dinner by my parents-in-law on Sunday ^^
