You all are doing so awesome. It is going to be long winter...but it's not going to suck as much as running in the heat.
I finished my 5k in 33:43 (clock time). My strategy was to push hard when I could see the finish line. At that point it doesn't matter if I get a little wheezy. However, I'd managed my air and energy through the race pretty well, so even though I got my butt handed to me by any number of 9 year olds, that's all I had, or so I thought. When I realized that I'd need to kick it up a notch to bring it in under 34, I dug down, raised my knees and fought against the urge to quit shared by every fiber of my body. Long story short, I could have kicked it up a notch from the time I saw the finish line and won't make that mistake again.
The beginning was really annoying. Very compact and didn't spread out at all in the first mile. I had to run on the sidewalk (even though that's a faux pas) to find a place in the crowd that worked for me. Granted most of them passed me again in the last mile, but it was hard to run my best race for the first mile. There were actually 11,000 participants, so they had separate start times for the 10k, timed 5k, 5k fun run/walk and they'd added a 1k for kids as well as the tot trot. I'd probably abandon the race but it's my "home" one.
Oh well, I'm happy with my time. Anything under 33 would have been beyond belief given the challenges I've had with a faster pace.0 -

I'm no longer happy with my time. If I'd pushed sooner I'd have beat 33 minutes. Blah.0 -

Or you've have pushed earlier and wouldn't have had the reserves for that last push at the end because of it. You should be happy with your time!
You don't have to be happy with a field of 11,000. That's just insane. That's slightly larger than the population of the city I live in.0 -

Your time was great and you should be proud. As Laura said you might not have had energy left for the end if you went out too fast. Those large races are hard to get going at the start and always slow me down. If you do the Peachtree next year you'll really see what a crowd does to your race start.0 -
Seems like a lot of drama for a shoe..lol. Honestly, i have ran in 3 different shoes, the nike free have been good for speed work and short runs after about 4 miles the bottom of my feet feels like it's getting an indian burn. The adidas crazy fast have been solid on longer runs, its a stiff shoe, but real light. I tried running in some pumas but they felt like i was running in combat boots. But no pain in legs or other parts with any shoe that I have worn. Running store involves driving about 2 hours to get to one, and getting time enough to make the trip ( hard to do with 4 teenagers who are active in school sports as well as 2 of them in elite leagues from time to time)
Finish Line has brooks ghost 6 for 69.00, so I think tomorrow, I'll go to academy and try both of them on and maybe make a decision. I don't know anything about my gait, but I assume i'm a neutral runner.
Well, if the shoes you have been wearing haven't been causing any pain then that's a good thing. Adidas makes some great shoes - I tried on the energy boost shoes last week and loved them. They are stiffer and more responsive, but super light. My wife bought a pair and ran the half marathon two days later in them. She had been running in the Ghost 6 but after 250 miles they were causing some shin pain. Next year I will probably switch to Adidas - the energy boost for long runs and either the Adizero, Haigo or Adios for shorter tempo runs & speedwork.
The Ghost 6 is a great shoe. I started running in the Ghost 5. I tried on the Ghost 6 recently and they felt amazing but the running store noticed my gait had changed and I needed a little support. Been running in the Brooks Ravenna 4 and love it.0 -
I haven't check in at all this past week. I did 4 miles on both Tuesday and Thursday and then 6.5 miles yesterday. I got a cold that set in on Friday, but since it's all from the neck up, I pushed ahead with my run anyhow. My left knee started hurting some during my run so I took a few walking breaks. I also picked a foam roller this morning, gonna figure that out today.0

Laura, congratulations on your 8 mile run. That is wonderful!
November was a complete wash for me, running wise. With work and life, I didn't run as much as I usually do or that I wanted to. I only ran 54Km in the entire month.
The good news, though, is that I didn't stop running and still look forward to it. Sometimes life will just slow things down but as long as I continue to run, I'm happy.
My hope for December is to continue to run as often as possible.
Everyone is doing so great. I'm really thrilled when I check this thread and see the progress and determination happening.0 -

There was only 1000 in the timed 5k, and I was a touch better than average. Which was nice because average didn't include many walkers. I'm pretty happy with the race today. Could-haves are the bane of running. I did what I could do on that day.0 -

You're still running and that's the important thing.0 -
Tim, that was an amazing time for your HM ... I'd probably still have another 5 to go at that time lol
Well done on your 5k, Varda - I'd be overwhelmed at the thought of running with 11000 other people even if they were all running different races!
Laura, 8miles!! That's fantastic
I've been a lard *kitten* - a half-hearted attempt to run on a treadmill today ended prematurely at 3miles when boredom set in .... Tomorrow I'm going to try again but with headphones ..... roll on Wednesday when I'll hopefully have my eye patch removed for good and get back out into the freezing cold and rain ... I must be mad lol0 -
Way to go Laura!! I did 7.2 today,, so happy0

Yep, it hurt pretty good on the left leg. The right leg didn't hurt. I can definitely see how this needs to be a regular deal. I didn't even realize I had knots in my left leg. It hurt while I was doing it but feels better when I finished.0 -
2 miles this morning...pull back week, culminating in a 5k this Saturday. Temps will be 10 degrees F for the run, with the possibility of ice and snow on thursday and friday.0

That's cold!! Our Thanksgiving race was the coldest temps I have ever experienced when running at 23°F (and the coldest Thanksgiving here in over 100 years). My face hurt the first couple of miles. I would need a ski mask at 10 degrees! Stay warm out there. It will be near 70°F here by the end of the week - too bad I am taking the week off from running and can't get out to enjoy it.0 -
Yup, going full face gear friday..temps are upper 60s today...just crazy0

Once you get that left leg worked out, it'll be more maintenance where you'll have a sore spot or two, but be pretty tolerable overall.0 -
Great job on your race, Tim and I love your recovery plan!
I'm also impressed by all the mileage this group is stacking up. I'm supposed to get out for an hour and a half tomorrow and nothing is going to stand in my way!0 -
Great runs everyone! Took me a little while to get caught up on the updates!
The only running I have done since my 10k was a quick 30 minute run on Saturday morning.
Edit: I actually kept running into the cool down to make it 3 miles. (I got a new phone and remembered to download the needed apps, but forgot to reset the preferences!)
I did get in over 60 miles on the bicycle since Thursday!
I brought my running gear to work with me and will try to get a run in this afternoon.0 -

And it will be back in the teens in a few days!0 -
Everyone is doing so well! Congratulations on all you races last weekend!
Didn't get as much running and biking in this past long weekend as I wanted, but still did enough to be happy with myself. I wanted to get out on Wednesday afternoon, Friday, and Sunday. Instead I managed Thursday (5k run) and Sunday (5 mile run/walk) outside, a little on my bike but not enough to count, and some inside playing around with my Wii.
Very happy with the Sunday run as I was only getting twinges in the right leg (IT band) by the end, rather than limping through to the end as usual. Yeah!
This week, I'm planning weight machines (Mon, Wed, Fri), water aerobics and swimming (Tues and maybe Thurs), exercise bike (Wed), and run (Friday). This coming weekend is a flyball tournament. After the tournament, my runs should increase in number and length.
I went to my local running store (Fleet Feet) early Friday morning to celebrate Black Friday. It was my only stop. They served pancakes and offered a bag of goods if you purchased $50 worth of goods. I went a bit beyond that as I bought new shoes, lightweight gloves, and a cute bright yellow reflective knit cap with a pony tail hole off the back. The shoes were what I went way over my budget with, but they are really nice and lightweight and were %15 off. I'm ready now when it's time to replace my current ones.
My bonus bag had a bunch of energy bars and gels, a reflective slap wristband, a pair of arm warmers, and a pair of socks.
I used my new gloves and hat for my Sunday run. The gloves were great and just what I wanted. The cap was too much for the weather, sunny, no wind, and upper 30s, so I pulled it off halfway. One nice thing about the pony tail holder was that it gave me the ability to tie the hat to Fells leash and not have to carry it the rest of the way. Really happy with all my winter clothes now. I think can handle any weather that Maryland can send except if it's cold plus raining or sleeting. Snow I'm okay with. I won't run in the dark when there is ice on the ground either, but I've got options.0 -
Sounds like you cleaned up! Good wishes for your IT band not giving you any more problems.0

I didn't realize my IT Band was tight until my trainer had me get down on the foam roller. Hurt so much I actually couldn't do it. Started out with a tennis ball to get the worst of the pain out, then moved onto the roller. I'm not as consistent with it as I should be for maintenance, but as soon as I start getting those twinges it reminds me.
btsinmd, sounds like that was a stop well worth making! Love your prize bag stuff. What kind of shoes did you get?0 -
Way to go Laura!! I did 7.2 today,, so happy
Awesome run!0 -
2 treadmill miles after my trainer session. We're in day 1 of a 3 day snowstorm so I didn't trust that I'd be able to get to the gym before work tomorrow, and the look on Jason's face when I told him I hadn't done it this morning didn't seem to leave skipping it as an option. Played around with building speed - up a smidge every quarter mile for the first mile, then dropped down to starting speed & built every 2/10ths the second mile. Usually treadmill run at 4.5 or 4.6, but did 4.7 --> 5.1 tonight at a 1.0 incline. That was about as much as I had in me, and my face matched my pink shirt by the time I was done.
p.s. I bought a pink shirt from the gym in October (breast cancer awareness) in a size too small - could get it on at the time, but it was too tight for me to breathe. Wore it tonight for the first time!0 -
Good for you BTS - new shoes are inspiring!!!! I'm about to pick up a 3rd pair - which is sad I don't have any normal girl shoe collection, but I have everything sports sock/shoe combination you can imagine!!!!
Today I procrastinated about running and ate way too much, I was RAVENOUSLY RAVENOUSLY hungry the ENTIRE DAY!!! I have no idea what the deal is, something to do with the big run yesterday perhaps? Also if I run super far (which is like 7 miles lol) then the top of my left foot hurts a bit (I think the shoe is slightly too tight) and the ball/pad of the same foot hurts for a day then it's fine again - I must be putting more weight on that foot still as compensation for my other ex-foot-surgery foot. I read lots today that that sounds normal due to getting used to the zero drop business, but I'll keep an eye on it I guess.
So I have to either run in my old shoes the next day (which makes me really miss the vibrams). That's the justification for a 3rd pair of shoes A pair to run in when my feet hurt LOLOLOL. They're more for if I do a run that has a trail component, I really need something that is a bit more solid, yet still barefoot-ish... I consider myself a real runner for justifying all this in my head!0 -

Wow! I am inspired by all of you! So many gains this last week! I am grinning! What a fabulous group!
Running PRs in all manner of weather, making distance gains, running despite lacking the use of an eye! Love it!!!
I ran outside today. The first since the dreadmill run on Wednesday. I drove all around town in the car first on a reconnaissance mission to find a suitable 6+ mile route since the roads and sidewalks are still patched and spotted with ice and snow, but not consistently enough to warrant yak traks. I ended up running 6.5 miles and walking another 1/2 to make 7 total. It felt harder than necessary today. For some reason, I never found my groove. My aches and pains seem to be increasing. Yuk! Boo! The plantar fasciitis is naggling me tonight and my legs were sore along the outside of my thighs from the get go. From what I've read, I need some quality time with a foam roller (which I do not yet own). I may try a tennis ball in a few minutes here. AND my knees are sore! I think the cheap Asics were not a good deal. (Beware the cheaper $60 Asics! My $120 pair were great.) I'm headed to a town 1 1/2 hours away on Friday for a Doctor's appointment. There is a running store there, and I may just plan a little time in for a visit!
However, on a happy note, I wore compression socks and my shin split feels much better. Almost non-noticeable. All in all I'm grateful for the run. Hopefully, I can get back on track with my training this month. I've been missing good mid-week training runs and barely squeezing out the long runs on the weekends.
Run on my friends! :-)0 -
I have not been around much - logging on my phone means no forum time and I have been work work working. Fitted in my 5K parkrun on Saturday morning, with my slowest time yet by 20 seconds but I DID NOT WALK. Which was a major victory over the killer hills. Then slogged out 7K this morning. Off to work now and I don't know if I will get out again this week until Maybe the saturday parkrun. I joined a gym last week but still haven't made it to the half hour induction!
You will all just keep running for me? Good.0
