I've been reading this with interest and mulling someone's opinion over the weekend. I posted last week about sterilising drug users until they're a long time clean to prevent kids being ill-looked after, taken into care, etc. Someone (sorry, apologies, I can't remember who, and there're too many posts to scroll through now) felt that we should all be sterilised and then request it be reversed and 'opt in' when we want to have kids. The more I think about this, the more I think it's a great idea. Granted, I'm sure we'd be stepping on human rights and all that, but man, how many problems would that solve?! Go you, whoever you were!

Why would you have to get sterilized if you could just opt in when you're ready to have kids? Unless you're saying that your aim is Eugenics? (sterilize anyone who is deemed unfit)

Always the fatal shortcoming in these types of scenarios. Often, people who take these positions never stop to think what it would be like to be on the receiving end. They assume (usually falsely) that they are the "moral" ones, superior to all others, and that "it could never happen to me".

I always like the extemely brutal and violent suggestions. "You know what would stop illegal imigration, shooting everyone at the border and putting their heads on pikes as a warning!"

Really, some one want to pick some tomatos without a green card and we're gonna commit war crimes to stop them? lol.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me -- and there was no one left to speak for me.

I like to mangle this quote by replacing Trade Unionists, Socialists and Jews with Smokers, Fatties and Drunks.
