Training

So, today I started training for my first 10k, it's not till the end of September, lol, but you can't accuse me of being under prepared! Originally I was going to finish b210k then do an 8 week training plan, but after looking at a training plan on Runner's World I saw it was starting with running over 6km, whereas I am running 7km in my b210k program and I'm only on week 2. This way I will have more time to work on my pacing and speed.

Today's run was a tempo run, 2k slow followed by 3k at a faster pace (or as I like to call it, the speed I run at when I know someone is watching!) and then a final 1k slow. The first half of my third fast km was up a steep(ish) hill and by the time I got to the top I thought I was going to vomit. But I managed to finish, albeit very slowly. Roll on Sunday!

That was an excellent training, congrats on your achievements. You are my good example, I have to find a 10k here soon to stay motivated.

Vomiting is what you are going for with intervals :)

6km easy run today and it was pretty easy, very slow though. The weather was warm and humid which didn't help, I'm a cold weather runner.

I'm a cool weather runner, too. Much nicer.

Hi romyhorse what APP are you using for b210k? I need to get in there too. Thanks

Well, I feel like a real runner now. Had a gait analysis and found that I have a neutral gait, purchased some funky trainers and signed up for my first 5k race in 4 weeks time! Wowwwwww get me!

I would like to start the bridge to 10k training but not sure where to start, what iphone APP etc and is that the right thing to do before my 5k race?

    Thanks

I am a cold weather runner too! Sunshine today and I ran along the fields, not good for me! I will have to find me a running route in the woods during summertime.

I am not using an app, I am using Runners World's Smart Coach which gives you free training plans, you just put in your details and it comes up with a running plan for you. I couldn't find a b210k app that I liked, I did find podcasts which I thought would suit me but I didn't like the music!

Well done on signing up for your first race, how exciting! I would think it would be okay to start b210k before your race. It will make your race feel so much shorter!

Today's run was another easy 6k. On Sunday I was listening to a 155bpm playlist (check out Jog.FM, it's great) and I ran an average 8 minutes per km, today I was listening to a 160bpm playlist and I ran an average 7:30 minutes per km, coincidence?? I'm tempted to download a 165bpm playlist to see if I can run a 7minue km!

A lot of people seem to like the Zen Labs 10k app and it's free.

I'm also using the Runners World SmartCoach plan.

I think almost all runners are cool weather runners. One of the most challenging parts of running is not overheating - it's why many of the most successful marathoners are a bit on the short side.

5k run today and very confused! I use Runtastic to measure how far I run/my speed. Today I ran for 5.15km according to Runtastic, but I also had Zombies Run running on my phone and it has GPS too, and it said I ran for 6.04km! So, I went on to Mapometer and mapped out my route and it said 5.40km... I suppose the safe option is to go with the Runtastic distance, better to run too far than not far enough!

Yes, better go with the shorter distance. It is a pity that some apps measure so incorrectly. That is the reason why I don´t use endomondo anymore. Calorieburn there is just fantasy. Distance the same. I use Caledos runner for runkeeper and it seems to be quite accurate on distance and my HRM for the burn.
You are doing fantastic with the running, great work!

I think the secret of the Endomondo calorie burn is that it counts your resting calories too, not just the additional ones you burn running.

Distances make me a little crazy. However, I've started to develop good routes with known distances, so I can do a gut check on my technology.

And I think I've found my go-to trail run site last night. Enough elevation and rubble to make it tricky at times, but I can feasibly run the entire way (with a little more conditioning) and the paths are beaten down enough that I don't really need the trail markers. It's also at the halfway point home from work and allows me to miss an intersection with a lot of congestion.

    Thanks Mamakira.
Vardaemi, that's great that you have a trail run near you, nothing like that near me. Do you plan to go running on your way home from work?

oh thanks for the tips re running coaches etc.

I did my best run today, bearing in mind Im still on my treadmill (after physio advised not to run outside due to rehab from an old op) I know Im going to have to do it soon or I will be so unprepared for my 5k. I figured if I got specialist total gel running trainers then its the best damage limitation for me so hopefully I wont injure my old weakness. I have the trainers now so gotta give it a try.

I dont know how to start my outdoor run? Feel a bit self concious? Go to the park and just run with music and APP on? I dont know why but I am a bit shy?! No one to go with at mo.

Anyway ...back to todays sucess...I did 3.10 miles in 34.31 mins making it 11"07 per mile. It may not sound impressive (lol) but Im very proud of that! the Nike+ app tracks treadmill (and road) so thats good for me at the moment.

will keep trying different coaches/apps etc till I find most suitable one,

well done, you are all doing tremendously well, you are an inspiration to me, thank you

Running in public is always stressful the first time. Totally normal. Just go the the park and run with the music and app on. It'll feel normal after the first time. Go really slow and stop and walk when you need to. Any change in your running program tends to push you back to square one, so don't feel bad if it's harder than you anticipated.

That is a fabulous time and you should feel proud of yourself. I'm back in the 12:30s for now. Probably the heat?

Romy - My husband picks up the kids on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, so I have a little time in the evening. I like to do my long run on one of those days. I'm thinking about doing group run once a month, a trail run once or twice, and a multi-use paved trail the rest of the time for my long run. Thursdays, I work from home, so I get up early and do speedwork in the morning. And then I get in a short easy run on the weekend.

AWW thanks vardaeml! wicked. you've given me the confidence to get my *kitten* out there!! great. i will keep you posted. my next run is scheduled for Saturday. I LOVE being a runner. Its ace.

I most definately struggle when its hotter, so yes |I agree the heat has a major part in how you run! Since starting the plan in march I feel my body temp has raised- its strange but I always used to be so cold. Now Im cooking with gas! Eating much much more and exercising regularly pushing myself my circulation has gone through the roof! So if you have hot weather too I can only imagine how you must feel! Its making me perspire at the thought lol

I was embarrassed to run in public too when I first started. I just put on my mp3 player and put my head down and ran. But I quickly overcame this and now I always have a smile and a Good Morning for everyone I meet.

Well, endomondo recorded my 10k as 5.05 miles, so I'd have to say it's a tad off. I don't know if any of them are much better in certain locations, though.

Another 6k run today, except it measured 6.7k-7.83k depending on which app I look at. A slow start but I finished well, I always find the first km hard but it was km 3 before I got into my stride today. Maybe it was all the shopping in sandals with heels yesterday?

I'm not saying my husband is competitive, but he is now saying he might enter the same 10k race as me, only difference is he is already super fit! Maybe if I'm DFL he'll run to the finish with me, lol. Everyone at his work has been commenting on how good his body is looking at the moment and he has got 16 of them doing Insanity with him, he should get a bonus for singlehandedly raising the fitness rate of the employees!

A local music festival and a job application stole my time on Saturday so the christening of my trainers outside happened today instead.

Thanks all for your comments/advice re: run and get outside!

It was hard, possibly in part to a really busy day yesterday (I was tired) and the park terrain! However I managed 2.87 miles with a speed of 12' 39" taking me 36.23 mins! I did push myself a little but not too hard as I was prepared for this run outside to be harder than the usual treadmill run!

It was really great being outdoors with the dogs & their walkers and fresh breeze in the sunshine, my hubby sat under a tree in the park so I didn't feel alone! Also using the Nike+ app on my iPhone I posted my run to Facebook at the start and got two 'likes' which I was notified of people cheering in my ears over my music which was brill! I could have done with another cheer at the last .5 mile mark tho lol! I also took advantage of choosing my power song when I was getting weak...Tolca's miracle!!

It was great experience running outdoors and so far I don't feel any ill effects on my back/abdo joints etc :drinker:

Well done romyhorse your training is going very well
