Daily check-in for keto friends... volume 3

Hey friends! I started the daily check-in thread back in 2015 to have a place to come to regularly to give and receive daily support while I muddled my way through the transition to the keto WOE.
In 2017 a new thread was started because the original had gotten so long. I figured with 2017 coming to an end, now seemed like a good time to start gearing up for 2018.
Feel free to jump in anytime to share what your plans are and how you are doing on your keto journey for 2018!

I basically said the same thing in another post but I want to say it again here for some support from my keto friends.
Lately, I’ve been half keto, half chocoholic and I really need to get that under control.
I’m off work now until January 8 and I would really like to just hit the reset button and spend the next week refocusing and getting back into ketosis. As silly as it sounds, I actually miss my bad keto breath.
It feels a bit crazy to me that I’m trying to start over now... in the middle of the festive season but I feel like if I don’t do it now, there will be even more damage to undo after Christmas.
I need to change my way of thinking and stop seeing holidays as an excuse to self-sabotage.9 -
Sometimes starting in the middle of the high food season can help mitigate the damage, and you'll be rolling by the new year already in Ketosis! Good job. I'm trying to do something similar for now, with a brief recess during my visit with my son...probably more alcohol damage than food... but I'm going to try to keep it keto alcohol plus serious dance burn off.
Then back to keto.
Haha about the keto breath...I scared my cat off this morning with it, and was like, "Yes! Back in ketosis!"7 -
Hi I have been doing metro since Aug. 2007.
Lost 15 lbs, but got the flu and cold in distress try to keep keto. Back on track today with lovely flush I hate those. So nice to find you here I am not alone.

I tried to restart yesterday but it was like a bad weight watchers commercial. Remember the one from 10-15 years ago? They have commercials about people who start their day with good intentions and end with a crash and burn. They called it th “grapefruit for breakfast, Rocky Road for dinner” diet. I didn’t actually have a grapefruit or Rocky Road ice cream yesterday but I started off hardcore keto style and ended with a giant bag of skittles and gum balls!
Today is a new day!3 -
Holding steady on food, still liquor free. No loss today, but I'm okay and not panicking or self sabotaging. No really cravings and calories are naturally reducing. Gotta love Keto for that!
Really miss my dance nights. That would help a lot, I think. But for now that part of my life is on hold. If my back would ease up, I'd start up the yoga again...
5 more days til I go to my son's house!! Very excited about that!! It's looking like I may be able to survive this season after all6 -
Hi There! Starting Keto tomorrow. Happy to have found this group!5

Hi There,
Also restarting keto again . Im restarting every Monday . I'm getting soo tired of being dissapointed in myself and failing again and again . I just cant trust myself anymore.
Anyway, im starting today. Good luck everyone.5 -
I’m the queen of re-starts and it used to frustrate me a lot too until someone pointed out that at least I am restarting... it means we haven’t given up! Keep restarting until it sticks!5

Another day of no loss. Bummed, but I know I'm 100% on target food wise. Just need to stick it out.
Might check in with ketostix for a mental boost. It's been awhile since I did that and I'll use any trick I can think of right now to keep me focused. I do luv that purple when I see it, and even pink will make me very happy!
Feeling lucky!5 -
@elize7 I have only seen purple once and that was the day after my marathon. I never achieve more than a light pink. My husband NEVER tests positive for ketones using a urine dip but he will with a blood prick. So each person is different. I would love to have the instant input of purple!3

Good call. I have ketostix but haven’t used them in months. I think I’ll pull mine out by the end of the week. That gives me time to tighten things up a bit more for a good result.1 -
Hi everyone. New to Keto, not new to MFP (not very active here though). I have been trying to make keto stick since the day after Thanksgiving, but I have a mean sugar addiction and the binges have been coming on strong with all the holiday treats around. I realized last night that I have a real problem and decided to treat sugar as the drug that it is for me. As a recovering sugar addict I can't touch not one bit, and keto is the solution for me. Viewing this WOE as more than just a means to lose weight is going a long way already. Day 1 again...need all the support I can get.15

I used to think I had a “sugar addiction” until I cut sugar/carbs out of my life. Your body craves what you give it. If you can get past the first week or so, you should start to notice that the call for sugar fades.7 -

I hope that is the case, I am ready to feel back in control.2 -
Stick with it, give it time jamndyl. I'm a sugar freak myself...it takes me about two weeks to really feel the keto plan rolling along...and then I really don't crave sugar much at all, and it becomes easier to say no when unexpected temptation occurs. It's the only way of life that works for me or else very low carb...but even that has been a slippery slope for me at times.

I found that I have to avoid any artificial sweeteners too as they make my body react just like sugar and lead to cravings.
Read an interesting book, okay I listened to it. I have it in print but found it easier to digest if I listened to it. It's called The Obesity Code, Unlocking the Secrets of Weight Loss by Jason Fung, MD It was quite good. He exposes what he calls weight loss myths and really goes after traditional thought.... his #1 irritation is calories. He isn't as concerned about calories as he is WHAT the calories come from. His whole focus, which is backed up by numerous studies is that weight gain is caused by hormones, specifically insulin. He talks a lot about what food raise insulin, NOT blood sugar levels but insulin and goes into insulin resistance etc. He is VERY much against a low-fat diet and basically says that the health industry (and the American Heart Association) sold themselves out to junk food in the name of low-fat being the way to go. I would say he ends up talking a Paleo diet more than pure ketogenic diet but he isn't against ketogenic. A big promoter of high fat for sure and very much against refined carbohydrates. Anyway, it was some good information and really made me look at the function of insulin in my body.
The reason I thought of this book was that they did studies about how artificial sweeteners affected the production of insulin. The body reacted just the same as if it was getting sugar and raised the insulin levels but did not raise the blood sugar levels. I found it interesting.

Made it through Day 1, Day 2 is pretty much in the bag because I feel like crap. OMG. Woke up with terrible stomach cramps and well um...TMI : I’m in the bathroom every 30 minutes. I suspect it was from the artificial sweetener in the Mio water enhancer. It was my first time trying it yesterday mixed with some lite salt for “ketorade”. I didn’t eat anything else new and unfortunately, it wasn’t my first “Day one” so I don’t know. KCKO I guess. It’s looking like a fasting day since I have no desire for food. Hope everyone else is have a better day.1

I was reviewing my 2017 results and setting my 2018 goals.
I started the year at 141 lbs and 26.2% body fat with a goal of getting down to 135 lbs and reducing body fat.
Goal 6 lb loss
Actual result - 6 lb gain, currently 147 lbs and 20.6% body fat.
I'll take it and call it a win!!!
Not setting a lb loss goal for 2018, just aiming for 18% body fat.8 -
That sounds like the best evaluation there, @tcunbeliever! Good luck on your next goal.0

So far another solid keto day. Missing the alcohol, though. Still holding off til Friday on that. Am kind of liking having a break from liquor, but had also hoped for a weightloss boost that hasn't happened.
No weight loss at all for a few days now. My calories may still be a tad high for that, but they are already low; so, I'm just working hard on cutting back slowly to avoid sudden binge urges, and sticking with very basic, simple keto food.
Two more days til I see my son. Suddenly, I feel a little more excited about the season. Might even try on some party outfits tonite.
Keto on, pals!!

I’m doing pretty much the same @elize7. My calories may be a bit too high for weight loss at the moment but cutting out sugar and carbs is more important at the moment.
It’s been awhile since I’ve lost anything but I’m stoked that I also haven’t gained. I’ll take it for now.3 -
I have "it". Not sure what "it" is but it's not the flu. No fever, just drainage and cough and no voice. My husband is rejoicing. lol
Eating too much and totally out of ketosis thanks to illness and eating what is handy since I don't want to cook. I can only handle so many nuts lol. Not going to really try to get back into it until after Christmas. Seems like it would be pointless knowing what is coming up. Dinner at my house on Christmas Day, we will have 23 here. 22 are family and one very brave guest. We have a lot of meat variety planned, a ham, turkey breast and duck. I was going to fix a goose but couldn't find one except for one that they wanted $240 for! Seriously $240 for a 12 pound goose!2 -

Maybe it was the fairy tale 'Golden' Goose!! Have a great Christmas and I hope you feel better before tomorrow.1 -
Already determined today will be a blip on my keto map. This time planned, with a traditional family dessert...and, I plan to enjoy.
Back at it tomorrow.
I will be so relieved to see this holiday pass, it has not been one to remember...and, starting tomorrow, I hope to get a jump start on fitness plans for the new year.
If I succeed, that will be me pulling a rabbit out of a hat.
Have a wonderful day today, pals.3 -
Yesterday and today have been write offs keto wise. My family will be staying with my parents for the next 3 days so I’m cutting myself a break a bit. I’m still being careful about bread and processed foods but mashed potatoes and gravy with Christmas turkey dinner? I’m not sure I’ll be able to pass it up... dinner is in an hour... we’ll see how it goes.1

How did you do? Hopefully you enjoyed time with the family no matter what1 -
Hi all! Excited about my 1 week update...made it through Christmas without cheating, stayed under 20g net carbs all week except Christmas eve, when I had 36g net carbs which is not bad at all. Woke up today 2lbs lighter than yesterday for a total of 6lbs lost my first week being totally on track. Yay! So excited to keep going.8

These are such inspiring posts! I tried the Leto woe a couple of months ago then gave up before I had any of the benefits. The carbs (and old habits) were calling me! I’m going to start again as I’ve realised that the perpetual low level headache that I have actually improves when I eat less carbs. It seems to be a brutal way of eating but I’ll give it a go for it’s health benefits. I’m vegetarian. Good luck to all of you.1

What do you mean by “brutal way of eating?”0
