7 miles running tonight, about half of that as hill repeats and about 2 miles of that as a walking warm up.
All at about 94F temp, 100F heat index
A bit of throbbing in the finger for the first mile or so of running but it went away when my body realized my mind was going to ignore it, and the heat.

June Goal: 100 Miles
6/1: 5.51 miles
6/2: 5.04 miles
6/5: 7.10 miles
6/7: 5.51 miles
6/8: 6.01 miles
6/8: 6.32 miles
6/11: 10.02 miles
6/14: 6.25 miles
51.76/100 miles completed for June
It was another hot morning. The temperature was 80°F when I got up. It dipped down to 79°F but still had a feels like on the 80's and dew point around 70°. And the wind was blowing at 18mph. But I still had a really nice run. I just took it slow, and ended up running 6.25 miles. I ran through the sprinklers at the courthouse again. I am able to stay on the sidewalk and get some spray from them. It kind of helped today that the wind was blowing. I didn't really plan to run that far, but I kind of got in the zone.

I am behind 'again'... more on that below.
@eleanorhawkins - Hope yo are ok from your slide down but you are definitely a bada$$ for continuing on the run. I have to think that I would do the same assuming nothing was broken and I wasn't bleeding anywhere too much. I have also continued on a few times when the trail was lost but I have also turned around and found alternative routes if I think something is too sketchy. Like @7lenny7 said could you have just squeezed the bite valve to get the water out? I do that for Hobbes to drink too. Maybe experiment with it before you go out again. It does sound like you are pretty well prepared all in all.
@katharmonic - you to are bada$$ with not one but 2 spartan races in one weekend! So glad you had all the comforts of the AirBNB to help you at least initially recover! Such a great placement and I love the race pictures!
@7lenny7 - OUCH! just OUCH!
So glad you won't need surgery and are able to run a bit now. I had the same thing with my arm, walking was fine but the jostling from running was just too much. Be prepared that it may come and go as your finger heals.
@marisap2010 - How do you calculate you LT? I hope Macon gets the R&R Marathon! I have friends that just ran it in San Diego and had a blast. That is pretty cool that you are participating in the video too!
Oh No @Teresa502! I hope you have a mild case and get over it quickly! I suspect we will all get it eventually.
@SummerSkier - I have several fingernails (not toenails) that split vertically and it is SO frustrating. I use a nail glue to try to fix them so they can at least grow out a bit but they always just split again. The doctor told me it id caused by a damaged cell and there really isn't a way to change it or make it go away.
Welcome back @Runaroundafieldx2
Hey there @noblsheep! Happy to see you back running again! Finding that consistency again is tough!
@quilteryoyo - you continue to amaze me with all that your manage to fit into your days!
I hope everyone is careful and taking it easy with the extreme heat hitting so many places here in the US!
We headed off on a road trip this morning and I really wish I had done more over the weekend. I did get in a run on Saturday in the heat and spent Sunday doing laundry and generally getting ready for our trip. Monday morning we woke up to cool, cloudy and drizzly so I had to get a run in. Hobbes and I got soaked but it was an awesome run. I also think my new Xero shoes make me want to run fast and I started out too fast and Hobbes didn't help by wanting to run, run, run. I did my 60/30 intervals with some longer running but no extra walk breaks. I had a PT appointment midday and he put me thru a workout. One of my main exercises now is pushups of several varieties along with lat pulldowns and rows. I am really enjoying getting back into it. Monday night Hobbes and I had agility and again it was so much running but so fun. Of course when we got home I still had to finish getting everything ready and packed for the trip. It was nearly 1am when I finally fell into bed and had to be up early so we could head out. Today was our longest drive - 9 hours of driving plus about an hour of stops. There is no where that I want to run where we are staying tonight (we have been here before and it is a pretty industrial area with lots of big trucks. Definitely not conducive to running). Tomorrow is a 7 hour drive but we will be in Hillsboro, OR early evening, with lots of awesome running areas so for sure I will get a run or a walk in as well as one on Thursday morning. On Friday we head to Seattle and I am hoping to get a run or two near my daughter's home. So far for the month I am at 43.48 miles. Not sure how much more I will get in but I will take whatever I can get in. Also note it is so lovely in OR and WA - highs maybe 70ish but mostly in the high 60's and no rain in the forecast! Luckily I will be missing out on the hot, hot weather at home!

@7lenny7 and @shanaber I did try to squeeze the valve with my fingers to get some water out onto a tissue to try and clean up but only managed to get a few drops. This bladder hose has a pretty strange valve... my old one I could just pull it off and water would pour out, not the case with the new one. Didn't think of the bagpipe idea, I'll have to experiment with that!
Also @7lenny7 glad you don't need surgery and you're healing so well. Sure sounds like the finger realises it has little choice but to behave!
I had a really scrappy run this morning, enough to make me beat myself up and end up in tears. First of all, the idea was hill repeats but my run coincided with the start of the school day, and the road I usually run those on is outside a school, so I went to a trail with a 'nice' hill... shorter but steeper than the road. Well I couldn't make it to the top the first time, had to walk the last bit. Wanted to quit. Refused. Walked back down and started over... telling myself 'ok, if you can run all the way up, no matter how slowly, we'll call it a day'. So I did. So slowly I was almost going backwards, but I did. At which point my brain went 'cool, one more time and you can stop'. Turns out I can be my own evil coach! After that I carried on round a loop we use a lot to train on with a few ups and downs including one really steep, technical path that I've always been wary of. That was where I found out what the real damage my 'slide' on Saturday did... the moment one foot slid a little bit I froze in panic. *kitten*. My legs started to shake and I just couldn't move. There was a little path through the bushes to one side that kind of zig-zag'ed down the size, I had to wince my way down that instead. So yeah, scratches and bruises are clearing up ok but it seems the mental aspect not so much. Really frustrating. I'm trying to tell myself to be kind, give myself time, stick to some easier descents until I get my confidence back, yada yada, but inside I'm screaming at myself. Dammit!
I phoned evil coach 1 to cry on his shoulder (lol) and he suggests I get one of those bosu things to work on my balance. I thought I had good balance from yoga, but worth a try.

@eleanorhawkins I bet the mental toughness on scary inclines comes back quicker than you expect.
@7lenny7 ouch! I'm glad it seems to be healing quickly for you though!
I went out planning to do a long run this morning. I've got a half marathon coming up and am not feeling ready. But not long into the run, and my hip was feeling off [again, it's like it comes and goes and I can't figure it out]. I thought I could fight my way through the run, but that might make it worse and I'd regret it. Thought of @MobyCarp. Took a scenic route back home to finish at 8.5 km, changed out my pack & visor for bike helmet, gloves and bright vest, and went out for a spin instead. Kept going until my total time between both workouts equalled the time it would've taken me to do the run, so 21 km cycling. Then I did my PT stretches for my hip, and later ran back to the school and a coffee shop for a "date" with hubby & daughter. It didn't feel too bad, but definitely niggly. Oh well.7 -

@polskagirl01 hugs! Stupid hip! I saw your run to bike and wondered if you had gone into triathlon mode.3 -
@eleanorhawkins - that mental toughness will come back. Just give yourself some grace and know that it was scary. For balance, I do a lot of different things, more so lately since I seem to be falling over more easily. Do some single leg exercises - anything where you are also moving your upper body, brushing your teeth, getting dressed, etc. Even weight based exercises that can pull your balance off (i.e. overhead press, single or double arm). This will help strengthen the muscles that help you stay upright when you come down awkwardly. Also check out some plyometric workouts. These were recently recommended to my by the PT - so things like squat jumps and jumping onto and off of things. I have a workout step that can be different heights and I am starting low and building up as well as doing the squat jumps. I don't have a bosu but they are great (and difficult) for doing squats and things while balancing.
@polskagirl01 - Great job listening to your body! But it can be so frustrating! Are you doing anything the day before that could be making your hip angry, standing more, sitting more, sitting in a particular chair or wearing a specific shoe to work?
I have mapped out a running path at our next hotel. The hotel chain actually provides a recommended route through MapMy Run, that goes through a park and along/around a creek. It isn't long but I am sure I can extend it a bit. I am excited to get there later today and check it out!8 -
Like many of you, we are experiencing unusually hot temperatures here. We were under a heat advisory yesterday afternoon. I managed a 1.68 mile walk at lunch and was so hot. This morning when I went out at 5:30 I was still shocked that it was so hot. We usually cool down at night but not last night. I know that is the norm for those of you Texas, Georgia, California and Arizona, but I’m not liking it! @eleanorhawkins I was watching the news last night and saw that Spain made headlines with their heat wave. Everyone be careful out there!
Thanks for all the well-wishes. I feel 100% better today. Looking at my Garmin data, I’ve noticed that when I first got sick and for about 5 days after, my resting heart rate has trended higher than usual. It is now trending in my normal range. I ran 3.5 miles this morning and walked 1.48 afterwards. On Saturday’s run, my heart rate jumped up to the maximum zone after the first half mile. I ended up walking a lot to bring it down. Today, exerting the same effort, I completed three miles before it reached that zone which is more normal for me.
Glad your finger is feeling so much better @7lenny7!
Hope you have a great road trip @shanaber!
Sorry you struggled with your run and the post-slide-down-the-mountain trauma @eleanorhawkins. Hang in there and each step will get better.
Glad you channeled your inner @MobyCarp and altered your workout so as not to cause further injury @polskagirl01.

@shanaber thank you, yes I've been reading a lot about the need for women of a certain age to be doing plyometrics... must get over my hatred of jumping, I guess, even if my knees don't like the idea much. I've always thought my balance was pretty good, and my ankles pretty strong, I do yoga every day and have no trouble with static balance stuff, but admittedly since the start of perimenopause particularly I'm finding I wobble more on stuff like single-leg deadlifts.
A hotel that suggests a running route sounds awesome! Enjoy!
@Teresa502 thank you, too. I'm right on the south coast, so what the rest of the country is calling a heatwave is basically just the start of the summer for us. It's hot, but then it always is in the summer. I'm pretty glad I can run early in the morning now though!
Good to hear you're feeling better now. Resting heart rate does seem to be a very reliable indication of illness and recovery. Anecdotally I remember my last Garmin and MFP telling me I could eat 3,000 calories the first day of a nasty throat infection I had a couple of years ago because they used heart rate to calculate it and apparently my heart was racing all day even though I was in bed.
I fly to the UK to see my Dad on Saturday. So today, when I'm trying to get all my work done and everything organised (including leaving meals ready for the family to heat and eat while I'm gone) the airline emailed me to say the flight had been cancelled and they were sending me to an airport 3 hours away instead. Not good when I arrive in the evening and have to get myself to the house by public transport. So I've had to get a refund and find another flight, which has cost more and means an early start. So no run that morning. You know those days when you wish you had just stayed in bed? Still, first world problems and I must be grateful for what I have, I know.5 -

Back up to 30 minute runs now and feeling not too bad.
Just signed up to my first half in two years In September.
I'll be doing 4 runs each week, currently doing 3
Hoping for another 29 miles this month. My mile times are very slow at the moment but hoping the speed comes back after ramping up the time.

@shanaber I hope those routes around the hotel are nice!
@polskagirl01 way to get the work in! Glad @MobyCarp was talking to you ❣️
@eleanorhawkins you will overcome and gain your mental toughness in no time. That stinks about your flight. Hope you can get it worked out.
Had a little extra time today so did 7 easy treadmill miles. HR average was 99bpm! That IS taking it easy 😉
Right on track for the middle of the month, but don't think I'll get a long run in this weekend as we are traveling to Austin. We will do some hiking and kayaking, but don't think running is in the picture.
So may end up short at the end of the month.

7.5 miles tonight
63/160 miles for June
In spite of my lost weekend I still have a chance to make my goal if I don't miss more than a couple planned runs.
Tonight was an easy, flat run but the pace was faster than I expected. I was sure happy with that. For the second run in a row I forgot to use nipple bandaid and paid the price in the shower (TMI?). I wasn't happy with that.
I broke out my new Saucony Kinvara 12 shoes ($60 on clearance) today. It was my first time in this model and they really felt great..light, comfortable and enough space in the toe box. I can get other color schemes for $65 and might buy another pair. The pair I used tonight will now go back in reserve until I need them.
I've done so well with not buying shoes for a long time but now my shoe fetish seems to be emerging again. I bought two pair in the last couple weeks and am eyeing two other pair. As it stands now I have 19 pair with 8 of those in rotation (4 trail/4 road) and 11 in reserve (5 trail/6 road). 2 of those pair are very near retirement and 3-5 pair I'm tempted to donate because I don't think I'll use them very much. I keep them around because I'd feel bad getting rid of them but then I feel guilty because I don't use them. As a shoe geek I've tracked every pair of runners I've used and so far I've bought 41 pair and retired 22 of those pair since I've started running 7 years ago. Overall average price is $61 per pair.
@shanaber enjoy your trip and cooler weather!
@eleanorhawkins I think @shanaber said it well...give yourself some grace and don't be hard on yourself. It will come back before you know it. Your badassery isn't just going to disappear like that, it's just taking a short break to catch its breath. Your air flight troubles sound extremely annoying!!
@polskagirl01 it sounds like you made the right move switching to the bike. The one piece of advice from @MobyCarp I heed the most is that when you come back from an injury or even a niggle, once you feel ready to get back to running...wait one more day. I think that's served me well.
@Teresa502 Yay for feeling better!
nice job, @Runaroundafieldx2 !
I can't believe I'm actually back to typing with my crushed finger already. I have a smaller, thinner bandage on now so I actually hit one key, not a bunch at a time. I can't pound it out as quickly as normal, but this is just amazing to me.

Slowly building my running volume up - it's scary looking back at Strava records from this time last year when I was building up to peak fitness - an hour or more running five days a week! Moving house in early December, then Christmas, summer hotness, then Covid in March and recovery in April/May, has really messed with the past six months. Onwards!6

I've not posted for a few weeks but got a few runs done. Work and family stuff good and bad. I put my car in for a service 2 and1/2 weeks ago and only getting it back today because they were waiting on a part, everything is blamed on Brexit, Covid and now the War.

14/06 2.35

@Theresa502 - Glad you enjoyed your trip to Ireland. When visiting my sister I've ran twice on the seafront in Galway too so while we couldn't meet we have threaded the same ground!
@eleanorhawkins - To be able to continue on your strength and willpower are unbelievable after that fall!
@7lenny7 - Sorry about your finger, you will have t be carful with it for a while.

Thanks all for the comments on my Spartan race and pics. I took a couple of days off to recover. My lower back continued to be twingey so skipped yoga on Tuesday and just walked. Yesterday I took an easy run and it felt ok. This morning I went to the gym for strength training. I warmed up on the treadmill and substituted a few things to keep the back safe, but I felt good after. Especially after using the theragun. I broke down and ordered my own massage gun when I got home. The one I chose was rated very highly but much cheaper than theragun so I hope it's good.7 -
@katharmonic I did the same at xmas, got myself a 70€ massage gun and I love it more than I love my husband!6

New shoes! The Saucony Kinvara 12 road shoes I wore on my last run on the left, the Saucony Peregrine 11 trail shoes I'll try out this weekend on the right.
8 -
@7lenny7 yay, shoe porn!!!! If I have free time I might go into the sports shop in the town where my Dad lives next week and try on lots of shoes. Much as I like the Speedgoats for their super thick soles that I can basically stomp on razor-sharp rocks with, I need to find out whether my complete lack of normal toenails is just one of those things, or is something that could be solved with wider shoes or something.
And of course the credit I have for the ones with the dodgy soles is burning a hole in my virtual pocket.
I went out this morning for what was meant to just be a 5 km shake out run, but as I'm trying to increase my weekly elevation I decided to take the route that goes up and down some little hills. And that led me to the top of the road outside the school where I usually do hill repeats. So just to confirm that it is the technical footing that's my current issue rather than the hills themselves, I did easy down, hard up, easy down, easy up, hard down, easy up. Had to jump on and off the pavement to get round dithering children and avoid parents in cars, which made it a pretty good workout all round! Then I came home and did leg day. Then I realised that I need to be at the airport at 7.40am on Saturday, so I'm going to have to do Saturday's 10km run (cutback week long run) tomorrow instead. I should be working, I have loads to finish before I leave, but I'm currently plotting routes to get the elevation I want into that distance. Obsessed? Me? Ummmmm......6
