Sunday Weigh-In
CW: 2372 -
Happy Sunday friends. Well I had about 4 pages of chat to catch up on but I've read it all and there has been so much in the way of positive discussion.
@Antonia2050 Glad you and your family is safe but it's truly devastating what's going on in Maui. Heartbreaking to read.
@lauren_989 Some good advice in my opinion is to decide what the priority is. There will be seasons to your training - sometimes it'll be training for a 5K, sometimes your running fitness will go on the backburner for strength training, etc. Whatever your priority is, schedule that in first. Make that your top consideration. Plan for the things to fit around them but know they'll be the first to get bumped.
@DianaGetsFit512 Our families have so much influence in how we feel about ourselves and our bodies. I'm sorry the day with the dress had to happen at all. We'd all fare a little better to leave comments about other's bodies out of mouths, I think.
I did it... I signed up for the 2024 Gran Fondo that we did this year. This gives me a long runway and a training goal.. something to work on.
Alcohol consumption has been better overall - drinking less days during the week. The days I do it's usually the weekend and I drink too much, but I'm just happy to be spacing out the drinking days.7 -
Whoo! this was one LONG day. I had a concert this afternoon with a droll flute quintet - not my fave kind of ensemble or repertoire, but it was a fun outdoor event in a beautiful setting. Unfortunately, the person who was supposed to run the sound equipment had an emergency and could not make it, so I spent the past couple of days trying to find someone to help. No one could, but this morning I got a fantastic tutorial on how to set up, plug, place, and run the mixer from my best friend's son. He has done a lot of this and knew just how to make it seem easy. It worked, but it was a lot of extra work! Then I had to return all the equipment and finally was so hungry by the time I was done with everything. I had not had any time for lunch, the event was long (we played 20 minutes or so each hour from 1-4), I sat in the sun the whole time -- in short. Hungry! Thirsty! Hot!!! I ate pizza. It was divine. I did manage to skip all the ice cream I had been dreaming of all afternoon.
The results from this week will only be announced tomorrow - the person who does the announcements is having a busy day too. But we did well! 2nd place and plenty of inspiring people. Thanks @lauren_989
@adrimango and @CarolAnnM2 for leading the way for us!
Well done for signing up for next year's Gran Fondo @ashleycarole86 - having external and inspiring goals is certainly helpful.
I'm heading off to zzz land. Monday folks - you ready?

Sunday Weigh-In

Gotta congratulate you on a great week! Down 3 pounds after a brief stall. Well done!2 -
lauren_989 wrote: »I have a question for how people plan out their exercise for the week. I seem to be really consistent with either strength training or cardio, but not both. Earlier this spring, I was doing a lot of jogging and prepping for the 5k. Over the summer it's been body pump 3 times a week but no cardio. Do you exercise 5-6 days a week? Or double up on the days you do exercise? My husband and I are going to do another 5k in october so I want to start jogging again (plus the health benefits) but don't want to stop my body pump class.
Any thoughts are appreciated!
I think it depends on what your goals are. If you are entering a race (ex: 5K), I’d suggest adding more cardio but still keeping your body pump class if it makes you happy if your goal is to have a certain time or run for longer periods. I have found that when I’ve doubled my exercise, I’ll be good for a week, and then the exhaustion will hit or I’ll be ravenous and overeat in my calorie goals.
I am trying to get 5 workouts a week in, including a spin class weekly, and my goal is to build muscle. Then I use the other 4 days for resistance training videos from Sydney Cummings Houdyshell. Some of her strength workouts incorporate cardio so I still get a good mix in addition to the spin class.

Morning!
Big wake up call on the scale this morning.. the free for all weekends just continue to catch up to me.
Both Brad and I are feeling the effects of needing to tighten up. Back to tracking.
He is travelling again this week for a couple of nights.. I miss him already! I will plan to cook tonight and ride the Peloton on top of a walk.8 -
Weekend was good, Didn't eat horribly, even though I had a slice of Lemon Meringue.
Saturday there was no yoga class, so I did an hour at home, plus walked a lot in the pool (when we 1st get there, we walk back and forth the length, 15 times) and I did some other intentional stuff. It was too hot to not be in the pool, so had to find something to do...
Sunday, I did a whole lot of nothing. I did make my lunch for the week though, its Chicken Enchilada soup, kinda.
Have a great Monday !

Not my greatest on steps this week. My piriformis syndrome has decided to act up more than usual and is slowing me down. Generally it doesn't bother me during movement, but this week it changed its mind, sitting, standing, walking, they all hurt. I'm doing my stretches but it does not seem to be helping.6 -
Greetings Friends!
I've been good so far today. I've drunk my water, done my workout, and eaten sensibly. But other than that I've mostly been just working. I still have a ton of work to do on my website, but I feel confident that I'll be able to get it all done if I just stay consistent. Still another couple of hours in the can before I call it a day.
@ashleycarole86 The Grand Fondo next year? I think you're awesome. Always inspiring.

@lauren_989 I plan my workouts around whatever my lifestyle needs at the time. Right now, I've been adding in runs to my normal spin and CrossFit workouts because I am running a relay race in 10 days. After the race, I will go back to my normal routine - M, W, F, Sa = spin, T, Th, F = CrossFit. My goal is four days of exercise/week. I think if you can find a type of workout and a routine that works for you, than you should keep to it and not worry about cardio vs weightlifting.
This weekend was not my finest work. My husband and I went to a local festival and then after it, the instigator won by proposing a day out at my favorite cidery. Basically, the husband and I spent the whole weekend drinking. I am getting ready to start 75 hard with a friend and with that is no drinking. So, naturally we had to get rid of all the temptations in the house by drinking them. Saturday was all ciders, Sunday was wines. Amazingly, despite all of this, I found the energy and time for a couple runs.
I will be curious to see what the scale says tomorrow at my weigh-in. I bet it will be up, but this should be the last week with an increase for a while since I'm back on the wagon as I have to be for 75 hard.2 -
Here is my step & exercise count for the last week:
Sunday, August 6th - 6,729 steps
Monday, August 7th - 5,064 steps (9 hours of driving)
Tuesday, August 8th - 3,643 steps (5.5 hours of driving)
Wednesday, August 9th - 0 steps - did not wear my fitbit and I had a migraine all day
Thursday, August 10th - 5,493 steps - 15 minute walk, 15 minutes of shooting hoops - still recovering from the migraine
Friday, August 11th - 5,317 steps - 15 minutes of shooting hoops, one hour of CrossFit
Saturday, August 12th - 6,002 steps - 2.29 mile run - the steps should have been more, 7,000 or 8,000 because I walked around a festival for more than an hour, but my fitbit battery suddenly died. It was at 90% before the run and can usually last at least a week. I've had to charge it at least once/day since then.

@MaddawgMadsen I just looked up 75 hard. Yikes! It sounds hard! A gallon of water is the part that makes me a bit worried - that might be reasonable for some big guy, but for a smaller person, it can cause some bad problems to have too much water. Adjust if needed and still enjoy the challenge!
That said, the alcohol drinking parties ending or slowing down for some of you sounds good to me for sure! I know I have had a much easier time of just about everything since almost eliminating alcohol. I still have one every now and again, but getting rid of the repeats has helped a great deal.
@CarolAnnM2 and @littlemzkitty - you are both doing great! Another beautiful weigh-in. WTG!
I had a lovely ride with Jasper this morning - not too vigorous, just super pleasant and enough trotting that we didn't feel lazy I'm enjoying the cooler days while they last - it is supposed to get hotter again... Ugh. Thursday is my son's and mom's birthday - my sister @EvMakesChanges will be down with mom and my son will party up here with us, my brother-in-law, and my daughter and her guy. I miss the days when it was easier for mom to travel so we could celebrate both birthdays together. We had some really fun ones.

Happy Monday! You're right about the early days and combo birthday parties. Well, each year gets to be its own thing so it might as well be different. It'll be busy the next several days so I plan to skip weighing in this week. By the time we drive back to VT, it'll be close to my next week time so, that's what I'll aim for.
I'm in a stuck exercise spot and feel very sluggish. It doesn't help planning to pack for the NC trip via airplane and return to VT by car. Well, moving onwards...tonight we'll have leftovers and practice getting to bed earlier so by the time we get to Wednesday, we won't feel too tired leaving the house at 3:00 a.m. Who am I kidding? Of COURSE we will! However, it'll be worth the effort to have a free spot to park the car until our return.
I'll touch base as I can.

I'm seeing a lot of benefits to walking during work (treadmill under my desk). I am not stressed about getting movement in, I easily get over 10,000 steps a day, I have a lot less ankle/calf swelling at the end of the day, I am getting movement in despite the heat (I was trying to take walks outside), my back hurts less, and I swear I am less hungry.
I leave tomorrow afternoon for a short solo trip to the beach. I'll take lots of long walks, swim, read, and do my personal annual planning.7 -
Thanks @jugar 🙏🏻1

@Gidgitgoescrzy Personally, I would go for better instead of perfect. Perfect seems like a set-up for failure and an excuse for justifications and compromise. Nothing is perfect, except it seems like better could be.
@jugar thanks for the concern about the water intake for 75 hard. To be honest, I should call it 75 medium or 75 easy. My friend and I both plan to tweak it a little to fit our life. We work together and both have a trip to visit a customer in the middle of September. It will be too hard to get both workouts in and avoid alcohol on that trip. So, instead of starting over, we are just allowing ourselves a break over that weekend. Also, with my work schedule, the outdoor workout of 45 minutes will be three 15 minute workouts during my breaks. So, 75 hard-ish. Also, I've done the 75 hard before for about a month before I caught the flu and had to stop. The water intake was actually not that hard or that bad. With all the working out, I wanted to drink all that water.4 -

Another green week! I am meeting some friends for lunch today, but have already looked at the menu and came up with a plan!
@Gidgitgoescrzy Yes! Get that perfect day! It's amazing the momentum you can build on just one day!6 -
Congratulations Lauren!! @lauren_989 You are doing fantastic!!
Had a water balloon “fight” with my granddaughter and little neighbor today. It was so stifling hot. Dew point is high and nothing evaporates. Not too many steps, lots of in house time from the heat.
I finally logged my food. Up over 2,000 calories. Yikes! I need to cut a whole bunch. I have so many things to work on. I’ll get there.
My bestie for life is driving down from Boston to visit me Thursday through Sunday. Can’t wait to see her. She’s a super athletic, marathon runner, healthy eater, physical
trainer, nurse. You may be wondering what we have in common? 😂 love her to death. ❤️
Soon my life will have more structure and I always do better with structure. I may also try a new weight training Pilates I’ve found on Lindywell, the Pilates group @jugar and I use.
Talk to you later.7 -
@micki48 you have to find out how many calories you burn in a water balloon fight on a hot day! It must be plenty. I'm so glad your friend is going to visit you - I bet you'll have a fantastic time. And yes! Try that weight + Pilates stuff. It is fun.
Tuesday has been pretty good. It was not too terribly hot here, so it was possible to get a lot done without melting. I went from mad errand running to a horse workout session to mowing and garden work. Food has been good - I have a batch of my favourite late summer dish. It is sort of a cross between ratatouille and succotash. Lots of summer vegetables with fresh herbs and chickpeas. Great hot or cold. I'm making more tomorrow!

Well it is very hot here. Seeing temperatures that are very unusual. I had therapy at lunch and dinner with friends after work but I walked home. Steps are a bit lower but I need to prioritize sleep!5

UGH....
Yesterday was not a perfect day!
I don't know why I do this; I do good for a couple of weeks then the momentum just dies...
Friday morning, I am going to North Dakota until Tuesday, my daughter and I are going to visit my youngest son, (he is in the USAF and is stationed there). She wants to do outdoorsy stuff. So hopefully that will light a fire under me.
I've done this before, I know how to do it, I just don't understand why I am not doing it.

@Gidgitgoescrzy
I get the feeling. I keep having really good days and then a really bad day or two to offset it all. Have fun with your kids in ND!
Got a great sleep score last night which I love. Today is extremely busy- a full day of meetings and then a retirement party for one of my closest work friends and mentors. It's a cocktail hour and then dinner so it'll be late. The dinner is at a very fancy steakhouse. My plan is to keep my alcohol down as I know the meal will be more indulgent. We'll see how I fare!2 -
@Gidgitgoescrzy I could have said this myself.
I've done this before, I know how to do it, I just don't understand why I am not doing it.
I think, for me, as I get older I don’t really care what other people think about me and I want to do what I want. But in the end, we know if we don’t feel great in our bodies for more healthy reasons, we really need to do something.
I often wonder if I’ll ever get the weight down and kept off. While I have been better at exercise than I currently am, I don’t see myself exercising like many of you. It’s not how I define myself. I’d say I’m a person who is kind of active not I’m a person who pushes the limits of my body. I don’t think I’m lazy, but I don’t mind being a little lazy. I guess it’s better to call it relaxing. 😂
Oh well. Breakfast is logged. Hopefully I can consume fewer than 2400 calories today because that’s not going to get me where I want to be.
Cloudy and warm here today with a long day ahead entertaining a 5 year old. I’m tired. Maybe she’ll take a nap. 😂 I got up early and did 25 minutes of Pilates. Mostly for my hip. It helped for sure. Not much deep sleep last night. I keep getting up four or five times a night. Ugh.
Have fun on your trip Vikki. Post a photo if you can. My son was just is SD for work and it was gorgeous.3 -
I read an interesting post today about "strategic underachievement." It basically says we can't do everything and be perfect, so if you really want to focus on something, choose something else that you can suck at for a while. If you want to focus on your exercise routine, your house may not be as clean or you may not be able to watch all the shows on netlfix. You decide on what can give way a little to help focus on your priority. It helps you not burn out.
I found this topic very interesting. I know I was talking about my exercise recently and how to plan my various workouts. I am now trying to think if there is something I can cut back on to fit in joggin a few days a week until my 5k. Too bad I can't cut back on work 😂
What are your thoughts on strategic underachievement?4
