It seems like we had no damage. I’ve been texting a year round neighbor. H walked over to my house(2 house from his) and said it didn’t look like we had and surge. I asked him to open the door to our storage room so air could get in there . Mold is a big issue there. Any lingering moisture sets the house up mold.0

Helene, I’m so glad your home escaped damage! I know you’re still finishing up repairs from the last one, so it’s nice that you won’t have any additional issues to deal with. The flooding from that storm is horrendous! I feel so bad for the people who are losing their homes and livelihoods from it. I don’t understand how anyone can still be denying that climate change is having some very negative effects on all of us.0

I agree about the climate deniers. Storms are stronger and more frequent. This was the third hurricane in 18 months to hit the FL panhandle. Helene was the strongest yet and affected states north of FLORIDA more than usual because it moved so fast. My area of FL spent a fortune on renourishing the beaches last year. Most of that sand is probably back in the ocean.0

New free Covid tests are now available. It’s 4 tests per household. The website is covidtests.give. I just ordered ours.0

I ordered ours on Saturday and they were delivered today! Pretty fast service, lol! I’m hoping we don’t need to use them but just learned that a friend tested positive this morning. I was with her over a week ago, so I’m probably safe.0

Better to have the tests on hand just in case. I have a couple friends who just recently recovered from Covid. Both were pretty sick. I hadn’t seen them recently so I wasn’t exposed but it tells me Covid is around my area.0

Some homes on the island were flooded again. We’re lucky that we’re in the middle of the island probably not more than a quarter mile from the water. But there are houses between us and the beach. I think they probably buffered us from the storm by taking the brunt of the surge.0

I'm struggling to get back on my diet and stay on it. I just get SO tired of dieting.
I'm taking an acquaintance with me today when I feed the colonies; in hopes she'll be a backup just in case. She seems interested. What concerns me is whether she's physically up to it. We'll see.0 -

Yesterday I celebrated my 71st birthday quietly at home, except for a quick trip to the grocery store, lol. I do have a couple of celebrations planned with girlfriends coming up.
DH had an appointment with his cardiologist for pre-surgery clearance required by the orthopedist who will do his shoulder replacement. The cardiologist has had the same surgery and was able to allay some of DH’s concerns about the surgery. He ordered a nuclear stress test before he can sign off on the surgery, which will happen in a couple of weeks. He also has to see the PCP for clearance, but that appointment needs to be within 30-45 days of the surgery, which won’t be until January. It seems like our lives revolve around all of the medical appointments these days.0 -

Meanwhile we have sunny but chilly weather.

We just got home from a trip to NJ to visit my brother-in-law at his assisted living facility. He has Parkinson’s with complications. We saw him in June but he’s frailer than he was then. All in all it was a good visit. He has dementia and can’t speak louder than a whisper. We talked about things from the past and he was engaged in the conversation.
Our house in FL came through Milton without damage. Power was just restored to and my neighbor said he could hear our AC start up when he reset the main breaker for us.0 -

Two days ago I got my winter coat out to feed, yesterday it was in the 80's, today it feels like fall with the wind whipping around all the dead leaves.

It finally got cool here, but the temps are going back up in a day or two. We will enjoy it while it lasts!
Last night some of my friends and I enjoyed a wonderful evening to celebrate my birthday. We had appetizers first with wine, then enjoyed a delicious dinner of spaghetti, salad and bread. One of the ladies brought Nothing But Bundt cakes for each of us to enjoy. Afterward we played a game and talked before going home. It was such a fun evening and since everyone (except me) brought dishes to share, it wasn’t too taxing on my hostess. I enjoy going to restaurants for birthday celebrations, but if it’s a larger group it always seems like you don’t really get to talk to everyone. I really appreciated that my friend offered to host in her home instead. I had made 2 flavors of biscotti last week for a neighbor who is recovering from a fall down her stairs and had some extra, so I took those to my hostess last night as a thank you. She was pleased and surprised.
Early voting starts next week. DH and I plan to vote probably on Wednesday or Thursday, because we will be out of town on voting day. We typically vote early even if we are in town because it is easier and typically less crowded. One of my friends who was at my party last night works early voting and she advised to avoid the first 2 days because she said it would be more crowded and slower as they get their processes more streamlined. I’m really ready for this voting cycle to be over. I’m very tired of the constant barrage of negative ads. I’ve been surprised at how few yard signs I’ve seen for either candidate. Usually my neighborhood has some for Republican candidates, but this year there are none. As I was driving to my friend’s home last night I did see some in a neighborhood between her home and mine, but I think those are the first I’ve seen anywhere. Makes me wonder if there is less enthusiasm for tRump overall.0 -

We vote a couple weeks ago (drop box). Then we were briefly confused when we got ballots in the mail AGAIN but turns out they sent samples to everyone.
I see a lot of Hogan signs around. I hope Marylanders aren't that stupid. BUT I confess our party didn't do the best jot choosing a candidate. Of course when that candidate was chosen I don't think most people knew Hogan was going to get in the race.
I also think our party did a lousy job with the presidential race. If I weren't worried about our very democracy I'd suggest we deserved to lose but since I am SUPER worried, I'll just hope for the best.
I don't seen any signs for the cheeto. So hopefully even if Maryland sends Hogan to the senate we won't vote for the cheeto!

Fran and I were standing in the driveway Wednesday talking when all kinds of sirens and flashing lights started pulling in at the cross street that our street empties into. I didn't find out what was going on until the next day. A man fell down a deep well no one knew about in the yard and spent 30 hours down there until someone out with their dog heard him yell. SO hard to believe it took that long. These aren't mansions on multi acre lots but small houses on 1/4 acre lots with folks walking their dogs all day long.0

Happy birthday Pam. I didn’t realize you had an October birthday. Mine was the fourth. We don’t have many campaign signs around town except for local races. My neighbor said he’d like to have a Harris sign at the house but was afraid of vandalism. That’s probably a fairly widespread assumption. Early voting starts here Saturday. We’ll vote next week so we don’t end up in a long line. It often extends to outside the building and temps here have been chilly.0

Back to the orthopedic doctor tomorrow. More X-rays. If no improvements, I’m leaning towards getting the pin in my finger.

I continue to be SO busy! Every time I turn around I'm getting an email that says "we are computerizing xyz and you need to get in line". I'm SO tired of all the crappy computer systems that it takes nowadays to run a non profit (not to mention my own personal life). Now my work wants me to test out some new system. The current system works great. Grrrrrr......Why test? I know it's cheaper which means it's crap and no one's going to listen to my opinion anyway regardless of what they say.
My October was SO full of doctors and vets. November looks better so maybe I can get some stuff done. Even DH can sense how anxious I am about the election. The Washington Post had contribution numbers to the presidential campaign by zip code and I was appalled too see that any dollars at all had gone to the cheeto's campaign from this zip code. Scary, scary stuff.0 -
I had a great visit at the orthopedic office. My last visit was three weeks before and we discussed how slowly my bone was regenerating and I might need a pin in my finger to stabilize it. Ian also said wearing the splint 24/7 was causing my finger to be less flexible and I’d lost some of the ability to bend it. I wanted to think about the options but by week’s end, I was leaning towards the pin. I stopped using the splint a week before the visit.
I had new X-rays yesterday and Ian tells me my bone is filling in nicely and needing a pin is now off the table. He showed me the X-rays and I was amazed at the difference. He said my tendons were fine and felt my finger was stiff because of the splint. He showed me a couple of exercises to improve flexibility. I go back for a final check up in six weeks and he thinks I’ll make a full recovery. It was completely unexpected news and I’m thrilled by the prognosis.0 -
That’s great news, Helene! Sometimes we just have to be patient and remember that our older bones don’t heal as fast as younger ones. At least, that’s been true for me.
Maryanne, I’m sorry your month has been so crazy busy and dealing with testing software on top of it! I always hated when management would decide to scrap a perfectly good system and have everyone learn a new one that always seemed full of bugs and glitches. By the time those got worked out and everyone was comfortable with the new system, it was time for a new one. How much productivity was lost every time while we worked through the bugs and learning curve???
Things have been quiet here with just routine stuff like doctor’s appointments and tests. DH had another sleep study done Tuesday night so we are hopeful this time he’ll be able to get the CPAP machine he needs. It has been incredibly difficult so far and we finally threw in the towel and asked for a new sleep study, which the doctor readily agreed to order. He had one almost a year ago, but the doctor who ordered that one for some reason was never able to get the order right for a machine to be delivered. We made numerous calls to his office and finally gave up and switched doctors, but couldn’t get a copy of the notes from the previous doctor. We were able to get the sleep study itself, but the medical equipment company said they also required the doctor’s notes. We tried several times to get them with no success, so that’s when we finally just asked for a new test. I think his sleep pattern has changed a lot in the last year and his snoring sounds different, so the doctor agreed that a new test made sense.
Next Saturday we are flying to Norfolk, VA to visit my sister and family who live in Williamsburg. We will only be there 4 days but that will be our first time to visit them in their new home since they moved there last June.0 -

We’re delaying leaving for FL until mid December. The final visit on my finger is December 9th. We changed our plans to get that done.0 -
Pam, how did your eyelid surgery turn out? I have my consultation on Friday. Did you have both eyes done and how was the recovery? I recently wondered if the droopy eyelid played any part in my fall. I’m going to mention it to the doctor.0

Helene, it was by far the easiest surgery and recovery I’ve ever had. I only had 1 droopy eyelid. There was no pain at all and only a little discomfort from the bandaging on the first day and night. I was told to remove it after the first night and after that my only reminder of the surgery was the stitches that didn’t come out until a week or ten days later. I had to apply an ointment twice a day for about a week. My eyelid is fully healed now and there is a tiny scar that I think will eventually fade away. Now the eyelid that was operated on is about 1 millimeter higher than the other one, but you’d have to look really closely to notice that. The doctor thinks it will eventually relax to match the other eye over time.0
