Peak age for martial arts?
Here's a question that has been on my mind recently... What do you think is the peak age for your martial art? (At what point does the effects of age start to overtake additional experience?)

When there's no women to beat up, they let me beat up the children
:D For my birthday I got to spar everyone in the room one after another, including the kids. So much fun. Thought this picture was great! Right after I dropped an axe kick on him as hard as I could ;)

Breath control in Forms
Quick poll for those of you who practice Forms (Poomse/Kata, etc): Do you breathe out every move, or keep an even pace of breathing independent of movement? What is your reasoning behind your preferred method?

Why does TKD focus on kicks above the waist?
I did a bit of reading on self defense, and one of the biggest warnings given is that in a real life situation, never kick above the belt because it's easy to get your leg grabbed. Anyone who does TKD but has a friend who does BJJ can testify this. If you try to kick the BJJ person above the belt, they will grab your leg…

New Belt, starting assistant leadership team again.
Tested for my "high red" belt which is a red belt with a brown stripe. Just brown, high brown, and bodan before black now. I did great at the test. Sometimes I think I suck at sparring, but I actually go compete. So when I spar people at tests that aren't competitive I'm also kinda shocked. He was a red belt but I'm pretty…

Cross training - Frequency and timing
Do you cross train in other things (non martial arts) such as weight lifting, running or ..? How do you fit these activities in with your martial arts training? How often, and how do you time them against your training?

Me drunk after receiving a "Martial artist of the year" award last february.
Just sharing for the fun of it. I was smashed and had no idea I was going to be called up. I'm the drunk guy with raffle tickets around his neck. I was roughly 220lbs that night. The next banquet is scheduled for february again and I hope to be under 200lbs and in significantly better shape.

Goal weight... Decisions decisions.
Weigh in this morning was a pleasant surprise... and it got me (re) thinking my weight goals. My original goal was 160, and I'm now at 162. At some point, I decided to drop my goal to 150 because I thought it would help with speed. I'm now down to ~15% BF based on measurements and mirror - and at this point I'm probably…

food & nutrition
I imagine most of us are trying to lose weight or are in maintenance (maybe someone out there is trying to gain?) Do you count macros? Do you practice a special diet (paleo, vegan, etc) If so, when you made the dietary changes do you feel they also affected your athletic performance?

First time Rank up from 9th gup to 8th gup? (White to Yellow)
I have a few students ready to Rank up to their next belt. I know what I expect and have a 4th dan Black Belt (My Instructor) coming in to do the grading and I know what he expects. Black Belt - Destination, milestone or pivot point?
If you are on the journey to Black Belt (or your art's equivalent), do you see it as an end goal? (i.e when I get black belt, that's the best I can hope for, so I'll probably go join a Zumba class) Or maybe it is a pivot point? (When I get Black Belt, I'm going to change to a different Martial art!) Or... just a milestone?…

Warm up ideas
I think we have had a thread about this but I can't find it in the list. Tonight I was asked to lead the class warm up for the first time, unfortunately the guy I was leading with wasn't so good and kept switching between cardio and stretching. I want to put myself a plan together so that next time I am asked I can lead…

discipline + kids
I watched a class before mine last night of children - one of which I consoled after the class. He looked very defeated and almost frightened by the constant criticism and yelling of the teacher. I told him (he is American born) that when coach picks on you - it means he cares and is pushing you to improve. If he ignores…
