  • Never been to a gym. Rural living here. I walk and run outdoors. There are tons of workout videos on youtube for every fitness level and interest. I do have an elliptical/bike for when the weather is completely ridiculous. Good luck! Oh, I am 62, lost 70ish pounds and have kept them off for over 5 years.
  • Interesting. When I was losing, I weighed in every Friday morning. I continued my Friday weigh-ins for quite some time in maintenance - maybe 3 years. I realize we are (mostly) a bunch of obsessive-compulsive people. That's how we ended up here in the first place. I stopped logging a couple of years ago and quit the weekly…
  • 7.12 mile run, several walks with my husband and dog.
  • Welcome to the Borg! Silly fitbit. It gives me steps for drying my hair. Rather that worrying about/counting steps, which is so arbitrary, focus on how many calories you are burning. If you get up and walk for 5-10 minutes each hour, you are doing fine. Add in a couple of mile walks, a run, or a good 15-30 minute cardio…
  • @AlexandriaUK I, too, came here after quitting smoking and gaining a pile of weight. Not sure how much I gained, but I lost 70ish pounds and can wear the clothes I used to. Lol, never threw out my "skinny" clothes, but definitely got rid of my "fat" clothes as I lost weight. It has been a few weeks. How goes your journey?
  • So, every morning I get up and debate with myself whether to run or do something else. RUN wins most days unless the weather sucks ( rain, wind, blizzard). No treadmill here, so I cannot compare. I do have a love/hate with my elliptical, lol. Run, run, run! I run for an hour most days and while I may feel kind of crappy…
  • I do not carry water bottles when I run, even when it is warm. The extra weight would drive me crazy (but I don't mind running wearing 3-4 layers when it is c-c-cold!). I do, however, bring a lot of mints to keep my mouth from drying out. Tissues in my left pocket, mints in the right. Usually anything less than 10 miles,…
  • @debtay123 You are within 10# of normal bmi again? Maybe it is time to ask yourself why you self sabotage. Are you dieting or changing your lifestyle? Big difference. I am not trying to be mean, I just want you to succeed. I started here several years ago and was determined to never be fat again. I discovered veggies were…
  • Good news, bad news. I quit seven years ago. Yes, vaping helped, but my husband had spent a month in the hospital and kind of had to quit. That made it easier for me. Bad news...it's why I'm here. Food never tasted so good and I gained a ton of weight. Exercise was not a part of my life then. Back to the good news. I can…

  • Charge 3 here. I started with fitbits more than a year into my journey. I was already a few months into maintenance. Sometimes it seems the HR part is all over the place. I mean, some days I average in the 150s (or less) for my average heartrate running, other days it is in the 180s. Hmm, not sure I am varying that much,…
  • I am 60, female, 5'7" and have been in maintenance for well over 3 years. I stay within 3 or so pounds in the mid to upper 110s. I have always kept my activity set to sedentary for no other reason than I know what MFP is going to do. MFP thinks I should only eat 1540 calories/day. Going with TDEE and all that jazz, I set…
  • Oh, Lordy, maintenance can be a real b!tch. I was one of those who kept losing for months until I figured it out. See? It can go in one of several directions. Go with your gut and fiddle with the numbers. MFP is not the end all, be all when it comes to maintenance. Another thing to keep in mind. When losing, your stuff…
  • I historically have been thin. I was a heavy smoker for many years. After I quit, I gained a million pounds. OK, maybe 70 or so. OW! Being fat hurt! I carried most of the weight in my belly so bending over hurt like hell. Long story short, I hated the pain of the extra weight, complained to my doctor who sent me here and…
  • 60 here, in maintanence and willing to support anyone!
  • OK, but I will be the baby of the group (60). I am in maintenance. Is that ok with you?
  • @lynniehhhhh While I was losing, I thought the 5 week projection was pretty cool...until I realized it was basically bs. When I got to maintenance and changed my calories to something other than what MFP "suggested", the 5 week projection got really mean and told me I would gain! LOL, silly thing. "Pay no attention to the…
  • @kimirayray So, I exercise to youtube videos when the weather is really bad. BUT, snowshoeing is great as is just walking in the snow. I even run in the snow. No excuses just because winter. There are so many things you can do. Look for jessicasmithtv, lesliesansone, on youtube. While both are great for any age group, you…
  • Wow, so glad to see this thread active again. So now I'm 60 and have been here for almost 4-1/2 years. I lost 70ish pounds and have kept them off, plus or minus a couple for 3-1/2 of those years. I don't really log much anymore - mostly if I've found something new. I suppose what I've learned the most here is veggies,…
  • As long as you account for your alcohol calories, all is good. I lost over 70# (and have kept them off for over 4 years) and enjoyed my nightly vodka. Still do.
  • Believe it or not, Hello Healthy (the MFP blog) has some really good ideas! You can see them on the right side of your feed or sign up for the emails. Added bonus, you can (automatically) log the recipes so they will always be in your recipes.

  • Wow. I was going to ask how long you have been on MFP (or your routine). The longer you have been at this, the more familiar you should be with portions, movement, etc. I would read, then re-read what @middlehaitch wrote and follow what she suggested as best you can. Good luck!
  • When I first started here, I had no clue what all those acronyms were (still not too sure of some). I was in my 50s, 5'7" and 190#. MFP gave me 1640 calories at first to lose 1#/week. It worked. As I lost weight, MFP would lower my calories until, ultimately, I was at 1200. Yikes, was I grumpy! Anyway, I have always set my…
  • Congrats and continued success!
  • I called maintenance after losing 50ish pounds and my husband complained I was hangry at 1200 calories. Having had trouble figuring out maintenance, I lost another 20 over the next few months. As it turns out, that is where I have stayed for the last 3+ years. Whatever works for you is where you should be.
  • I have my maintenance set at 1800 and sedentary. I am anything but. I run on average 5 miles/day and walk a lot as well as other exercise. I probably eat somewhere between 2300-3000 calories/day and stay within the same 3 pounds and have for three years. I am 60 years old, female and lost 71#. Maintenance is a crap shoot -…
  • Sweating doesn't mean anything. Hell, I sweat in my sleep! (Am I burning extra calories with hot flashes?)
  • I spent my first 8-12 months here using only the MFP credits for exercise. Something must have been close to accurate because I lost 1-1.5#/week, for a total lost of 71#. I got a fitbit three years ago Christmas and it now tracks my calories burned. Please keep in mind I was already on maintenance when I got the fitbit.…
  • Have been through three holiday seasons on maintenance. I fluctuate between the same 3 pounds and have for those three years. Maintenance can be a real pain, but once you get used to it, it is easy. Want to eat more today? Exercise more today. Have a cold or the flu? Eat a bit less. As a friend once told me...One salad…
  • Was at the local diner a few days ago. I had chicken and dumplings and carrots. I was commenting to the waitress that I ate all my carrots when the owner/cook asked if I ate all my dumplings. When I told her no, she called me Twiggy. I then invited her to run with me any time she wants to. Point being, we do need to work…
