  • I like two shakes of cinnamon in my cup. Some people find cinnamon to be bitter, but I find I don't want sugar if I have cinnamon in it. Unless it's bad coffee, of course! ;)
  • This goofy thread has given me a lot of laughs on this, the evening of my 64th birthday. I've been doing ok with portion control and listening to my body, but right now my body, or maybe just my mouth, is telling me that a little more Haagen Dazs ice cream is what I need. I think I'll listen to it!
  • Wow, April, you've lost 60 pounds -- that's so great. And you're young -- you didn't wait until age 50 to make a change. You don't say how long this weight loss took you. I'm wondering whether you did something like lose ten pounds per month for six months? When you have a lot to lose, the initial weight loss can be quick…
  • Hi, Llamama. I lost 50 pounds 8 years ago, the last 20 on MFP. I kept it off for a few years by intuitive eating and drifted away from the app. And now, ugh, 35 of that 50 pounds has s-l-oooowly crept back on. So much for my intuition! I've been back just over one week. I'm so into calorie counting right now that even…
  • What's My Line? (find this on YouTube)
  • I believe the cutoff point is 1,000 calories, not 1,200.
  • You're not supposed to be that hungry. Megan Smarty above has the right advice: re-think your goals and adjust your calories up. You are not supposed to lose ten pounds in five weeks unless you're morbidly obese.
  • I'm dismayed to read this, Zyxst. Will you share a bit more about the drawbacks you've experienced?
  • Congratulations to you! I lost 50 pounds and kept it off for two years by eating intuitively as you are doing. Over another two years I've gained half of it back. I just stopped being quite as careful, stopped making good decisions most of the time. I'm back to tracking and have started in losing what I regained. This time…
  • Yes to these! I row year-round in Florida and enjoy rowing my single, but I miss sweep a lot. I never played a sport on a team, so sweep rowing is my only experience of working together, trying to move as one, to achieve a common goal. And I miss live theater and live music. I've watched YouTube plays and concerts, but…
  • Thank you Heybales and NorthCascades for your informative replies. Threads like this are why I read the comments on MFP. "You can run a 5K on glycogen but not a marathon" -- new information to me, very interesting and helpful. I learned at some point that all exercise starts out as anaerobic, but if you do it long enough…
  • Wow, a hug! This feels x-rated.
  • Some great advice I got from a rowing coach, but she said it's applicable to any sport, and esp. but not limited to older (50+) athletes: don't try to increase your speed as your stamina improves through training. Her example: if you get so that you can run 5K in 40 minutes, don't make your goal to run 5K in 30 minutes.…
  • Hello, my brother received this book for Christmas and I looked through it then. I've had it in mind to buy the book and read it, and finally ordered it today. It arrives on Tuesday. I look forward to reading and discussing it together.
  • For your sleep issues, look into tart cherry juice. You mentioned you have a hard time staying asleep; there's lots of anecdotal evidence that tart cherry juice helps with this specific problem. My father and several friends experienced less interrupted, more consistent sleep after incorporating tart cherry juice. It's…
  • I haven't seen these in years, but remember those little gold boxes of Godiva chocolates, 4 assorted chocolates to a box? They were such a cute stocking stuffer or small hostess present. Well, the serving size was 4 pieces, servings per container, one. Bravo for label realism!
  • When I'm really craving a snack and can't talk myself out of it, it sometimes means I'm actually hungry. I'll reframe what I'm doing as eating half of my lunch or part of my dinner, eat some real food and adjust my remaining calories accordingly. I can usually eat less of the later meal and keep from going over. If I…
  • It's most important to do these stretches first thing in the morning before you get out of bed and put weight on your foot. Also try to do them any time you've been sitting for awhile. It was explained to me that the fascia heals a little when there's no weight on it, but when you put weight on it again it re-breaks, over…
  • I'm in a similar boat to the OP. I'm 5'5, female, 60 y.o. Five years ago I lost 50 pounds, felt great, stronger, younger. I started a gradual regain about one year ago, and I've gained 25 pounds of it back. My clothes don't fit, my joints are sore, and I avoid mirrors. Not coincidentally, I've been preparing to move house…
  • Ha ha, I did this just a few minutes ago! But I can't convince myself that the spillage amounts to a serving of Haagen Dazs. (I decided to treat myself to a gin and tonic instead of ice cream tonight. Alas, the choice stands -- I can't fit both.)
  • Try doing these with your moving leg bent at the knee. This cuts down on the stress to those muscles. Eventually you'll be able to do them with a straight leg. Pilates instructor turned me on to this.
  • I used to buy those little gold foil boxes of Godiva chocolates, four in a box. I liked that the label read, "Serving size: 4 chocolates. Servings per container: 1." Hurrah for being realistic.
  • How did you keep the yolks from solidifying in the hot coffee? I suppose if you whipped them to a froth and then stirred them in a little at a time? Or did you have a better, quicker system?
  • Yes, take it, rock it, go you! But don't be discouraged if you're a hair back up over 200 tomorrow. Remember, it's not linear. In a week or two when you're a pound or more under 200, you won't bounce back up as easily.
  • I cook a cup of dry quinoa at a time; makes multiple servings, obviously more than I'm going to eat in one day. I found an entry for cooked quinoa where one of the units is a single gram. I verified the entry's accuracy on the USDA web site.
  • I just posted on the "Back on the bus" thread, having lost 50 two years ago, kept it off for nearly three years, then gained 20 back. I admire your discipline! That's what I misplaced; I need to find it again. Two pounds down so far this time around. I'll get there.
  • You could train her to do those other workouts with you, if they're things like running or swimming. :) She can't run for 40 minutes on her short little legs, and I don't think she'd be much good at jumping rope. And the Y won't let her join me for Body Pump! But she's a plus in every other way. I just have to make time to…
  • I lost 50 pounds over the course of two years, kept it off for three years, then this past year I've gained 20 of it back. Ugh. I think this has happened because I got a dog. Walking the dog has taken the place of other workouts that burned more calories. The canine has been a wonderful addition to my life, but I need to…
  • I suggest you ask your doctor about trying a short (3-4 week) course of Ritalin; extend it longer if it helps. Decades ago I was situationally depressed and couldn't shake it. Doc prescribed an SSRI (I can't remember which one), which did help, but after a few months it helped less. At a follow-up my kind and sensitive doc…
