  • My wife loves the smell of coffee when I make it, but can't stand the taste. Weird!
  • I admit to being a coffee snob...I keep a coffee maker in my office because the stuff in the break room only has a passing resemblance to coffee. I drink that black. When I go to Starbucks, especially since I started dieting, I usually get a quad espresso machiato (four shots of espresso with a little bit of foam on top).…
  • I feel your pain. I've lost 73 lbs since last fall and it's mostly been very steady - around 2 lbs/week. Some higher, some lower, sometimes there is a pause of a week or so. Lately, though, I've had weeks where I suddenly drop several pounds only to gain them right back. Progress slowed to a crawl for nearly a month. Even…
  • I'm a guinea pig shy of an Irish Setter. This is a weird list. :)
  • I started at 292 back in late September, currently down 65 pounds at 227. I have a deadline I need to meet (220 or less by June 30), but intend to keep working after that. An even 100 pounds would put me at 192, which is my eventual goal. As others have said, don't concentrate so much on that big number. Focus on the goals…
  • It's basically coconut oil. Some bodybuilders are using it because it gives them an energy boost and (supposedly) is less likely to be stored as adipose fat than other fats. Probably woo....just my opinion.

  • In addition to the other advice everyone's already given, keep in mind that weight loss is not a straight line. I will hit the occasional plateau and then suddenly drop several pounds. I don't do anything different but that's just how my body works. Looking at the graph in My Fitness Pal, I seem to hit plateaus like that…

  • Scales are mechanical devices and my guess is that most bathroom scales aren't exactly high quality scientific instruments. Our old one used to show a different weight each and every time you got on...I learned to do a quick average. :) The new scale is better but will sometimes get "stuck". Not sure how else to describe…
  • I'd recommend working with your trainer for advice, but this channel has a lot of good instructional videos. He's certainly not the only one out there, but I like his common sense approach: https://www.youtube.com/user/JDCav24
  • I would echo the others - talk to your PT. I assume you're already doing therapy as part of your recovery. I never met a PT who minded adding exercises. :) Above all, be careful. As I'm sure you've found out, you don't realize how many simple body motions involve the shoulder until you have something like this surgery.…
  • I'm doing this twice a week as a variation on intermittent fasting. It seemed to help me get past a plateau a few weeks back so I'm happy with it so far. I may take it up to three times a week.
  • I put in whatever the machine says....but then I never eat back my exercise calories so it's really just to help me keep track of how much exercise I've been doing.
  • Don't listen to these people, they obviously don't know what they're talking about. You just need to take UltraHydroxySlashAndBurnTestoBoostMegaHealth 5000. About 5 pills every hour ought to do it. Luckily they're only $10/pill. Oh, and drink lots of water.
  • This is exactly how I feel. I have to track my calories - just the act of doing so makes me think about what I'm eating. If I don't I'll gain the weight back. Again. I am really curious why people would say you're not supposed to use MFP long term. The only reason I can come up with is that they believe you should be able…
  • A lot of us have been there. I will be 50 in May and I have struggled with weight since I was a teenager. I went through a program called Target Metabolism (basically CICO with actual measurements for RMR and lean body mass) which got me down to 229. I completed the program and while I sort of kept calories under control I…
  • I never do. Well, if I have a big workout like today I'll maybe let myself have an extra 100 calories or so but that's about it. I'm trying to lose at more than the typical 1lb/week though...if I were not pushing so hard I probably would eat back about 1/2 of the calories as many people here do.
  • Well this thread has been amazingly informative! I'll never be able to ask for a growler refill again with a straight face. We call that a bird's nest.
  • I see what you did there.... ;)
  • OP, I'll let you know how long it takes when I get there. :) I have lost just over 23kg in just under 6 months, and need to lose another 9.5 or so in the next 3 months. That's pretty quick but I started at 132.4 so the first few months resulted in a lot of weight loss.
  • All the talk about salmon is making me laugh. I took the family on a cruise to Alaska. The boys and I love to fish so part of the trip was a day on a charter boat, and of course the cruise itself served some kind of salmon every day. My wife likes some seafood but mainly shrimp. She was determined to find a kind of salmon…
  • Relax, go out and have a good time. You won't be able to measure exactly so pick something under the calories that you're budgeting for dinner. That way if you go over your calories it shouldn't be far over. Avoid high sodium so you don't retain a lot of water. Most importantly, enjoy yourself. You may go over on calories…
  • I've recently started doing 5:2 because I had plateaued for several weeks. Well, my version of 5:2. I'm basically following my recommended calories 5 days a week and skipping breakfast and lunch 2 days a week and then eating a normal dinner (about 800 calories). I think the extended period of time (dinner one night until…
  • Everyone talks about that, and it certainly has happened for me when starting a new weight loss program. This is one explanation from this article:
  • So many reasons....I want to look better. I want to lower my blood pressure. My family has a history of diabetes and heart disease. I want to be around for (hopefully) grandkids some day. But right now I have a really specific reason. I am taking a group of Boy Scouts to Philmont this summer, which is a high adventure camp…
  • When I served, the "diet" was very high calorie, not low calorie, especially when at a training camp (boot, etc.). You're burning thousands of calories in exercise every day so you need to eat. The problem is that people continue to eat like that when they're back to normal duty and the exercise level drops. You'll…
  • I log nearly everything but I don't usually weigh anything. I know that's not considered the correct way to do things, but it's working for me so far. I suppose part of it is just skepticism on my part. I know the exercise machines are not accurate, I know the weight lifting calories are not accurate, so it seems a bit…
  • It's normal to lose a lot the first week or two, and then have it taper off a little. Your body is adjusting to the diet and that will have an effect on actual weight loss. I would not panic here, just keep on with what you're doing. I would suspect you'll see that scale number drop again soon. Lifting can cause water…
  • Stretching, stretching and more stretching. I'm about twice your age but even back then I would stretch a minimum of 15 minutes before AND after a hard workout. Also...you might check to see if you have low potassium levels. Fortunately an Army doc spotted that problem for me after I had a lot of muscle cramps. It's easy…
  • Very glad you decided not to purge...that's a bad road you don't want to go down. Your body will recover just fine in a day. Just drink lots of water the rest of the day to help flush out the sodium. You might eat some fresh veggies just to help you feel full later if you get hungry. Don't kick yourself - this stuff…
  • You guys have covered so many of the ones I've gotten...but here are a few silly things I've been told: "Just eat half of whatever is on your plate." (um...I can put a lot on a plate! Plus, my mom told me not to waste food) "Eat nothing but greens if you wanna be lean." (I like soul food but come on....) "You should do…
