  • Ten years ago I lost 100#. Like you, I'm a good dieter but not such a good maintainer. Once I stopped logging, I started gaining it all back. On one hand, I've learned what works. On the other hand, it's hard to maintain structure over long periods of time. Seems like a never-ending internal struggle.
  • I have never been shamed into doing anything positive for myself. It only ever led to hiding (eating sneakily), and diminished social and physical activity. Shaming erodes people's self-esteem and is counter productive. People should be encouraged to love themselves at any weight. Surprisingly, accepting myself for what I…
  • That has happened to me, and frankly I think at least one person knew very well I was not pregnant... It was just mean. But agree with poster above: shrug it off.
  • I like veggie noodles, although they are NOT the same as regular pasta. Ditto "Zero Pasta" (a Japanese product). My husband also uses the spiralizer to make shoestring potatoes :s !
  • My husband has a sweet tooth and likes to keep cookies around. I have him put them in the back, on a shelf I can't reach without a step stool. But last night he brought a package down on the counter and I gobbled down eight. Isn't that crazy? Oh, well, I duly recorded them and went on...
  • Glad to find this thread. I'm 62, and need to lose 70 pounds to qualify for joint replacement surgery. I'm bone on bone both knees and left hip -- really makes walking hard. I've lost ten pounds in the past two weeks, and am determined to get in better shape.
  • Be sure to cut off stems and blanch to reduce bitterness.
  • I lost nine pounds last week (my first week). Mind you, I started at 295# and I expect half of that was initial water loss. If I could maintain a loss of two pounds a week for a while, I would be happy. I'm not willing to starve myself -- the point is to get healthier and happier. I lost 30 pounds in three weeks from…
  • People who say that it's unfair that the healthy pay for the sick have no basic understanding of how insurance (and a decent society) works. Trust me, at some point, no one reaches the age of sixty without SOME sort of pre-existing condition.
  • No. I happen to believe that EVERYONE regardless of health, personal habits, income, or age should have access to basic healthcare. We need a single payer system like other civilized countries. If anything, barring the obese (or the old, poor, unemployed) from medical attention costs our country more in terms of lost…
  • I've heard and read good things about intermittent fasting. Fasting doesn't work for me -- I'm Type 2 diabetic and need to keep my blood sugar steady -- but it sounds like it works for you. Kudos!
  • Alcohol of any kind definitely stimulates the appetite, hence, the traditional "aperitif" before dinner. It helps me a bit to drink right before dinner. I'm unlikely to want another drink after dinner. Cutting out alcohol entirely would probably be a good move, but I'm not willing to feel deprived. So I just measure and…
  • Listen to your body. If you're not hungry don't worry that you're not eating enough. But if restricting your caloric intake is putting you at risk of losing control (and binging), build more food into your plan.
  • I've lost -- and gained back -- 100# at least three times in the course of my life. You're right that losing weight doesn't solve all of one's problems. As a woman (arguably!) losing weight creates MORE social challenges (as well as opportunities). When we strip away the weight, we have to confront other issues. From my…
  • Hi Dave, trying to lose a large amount of weight is daunting. And I understand so well your feeling, How Did This Happen? But it's never too soon -- or too late -- to turn things around. Best wishes!
  • Thanks for sharing your inspiring pictures.
  • I'm 62, sedentary. This week, I aimed for 1500 calories a day, but averaged 1800. I have lost 9 pounds (from 295 to 286) in the past seven days. So for me it is definitely possible to lose weight as long as I stay under 2000 calories a day.
  • May I also point out that "fit" =/= "not overweight"? My parents weren't overweight when I was a kid, but they had unhealthy eating/drinking habits. And of course it's possible for people to carry (some) extra weight and still be fit.
  • Obviously childhood obesity is concerning, but it's also important not to fat shame kids, since this sets them up for low self esteem and very tortured relationships with food later. BTW, I notice the public schools in my state are offering kids MUCH better options for lunch (unlimited raw veggie salad bars, reduced…
  • Echoing what others have said: I stick to spirits (whisky, vodka) with club soda. Once in a while, a light beer. I measure it out and religiously record the calories. The problem is, if I drink too much (more than two shots), I'm inclined to eat more. It's a tricky balance, but I'm not willing to give up the pleasure of…
