  • I usually run trails without any particular weapons. When I bring my chocolate lab, however, he constitutes as a weapon :) I go by how I feel. there are several places where I do carry a small can of mace - realizing that the biggest dangers out there share the same genus and species as us.
  • There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with talking to a professional. Just talking to someone who specializes in this will not automatically cause your daughter psychological issues (like some have let on in their comments...and shame on them for that). It does sound like she really enjoys the time she gets to spend with you…
  • P.S. Making homemade ice cream is surprisingly easy...I tried my hand at it 2 years ago. If you have an automatic maker all you need to do is sit back and wait :)
  • Have you tried looking on pinterest for some homemade versions? I was hoping to get an ice cream machine this summer and try out some homemade versions. I would suggest using coconut milk (full fat)
  • My local health food store has it. I believe Whole Foods carries it as well. I suggest microwaving or broiling to melt it, melting will take longer with Daiya. But my boyfriend, who is not d-f says he thinks the cheddar tastes "like normal cheese".
  • There is a book out there now called The Paleo Diet for Runner's (check the Runner's World website for more info). And it goes through how to prepare before a race.
  • I have lost weight (13 pounds), but I have also changed up the way I do g-f now. When baking, I try to incorporate higher fiber flours that have lower GI's. For example rice flour is just as bad as white flour when you look at it on the GI scale. But almond and coconut flour are so much better...higher in protein and fiber…
  • Today I did a 1/2 Food for Life multi-seed G-F english muffin with a fried egg and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. Lunch was leftover Chicken Tortilla soup topped with some D-F Daiya chedder cheese and toritlla chips. Snacks have been tea with coconut oil and stevia and homemade/raw juice from this morning (beet,…
  • Thanks! That explains my upset tummy on my holiday road trip...
  • If I need to use butter I go with Earth Balance soy free, otherwise I use olive oil on g-f toast, etc. I also use coconut oil a lot. I do not know of a soy free sour dairy free sour cream, but I think using lemon juice or apple cider vinegar with a d-f milk substitute can work for buttermilk substitutions. Cheese…
  • More protein will keep you satiated
  • I agree with anglyn1...also I find coconut oil to be really helpful in the stomach healing process; I usually put it in my tea or coffee in the morning. Marshmallow extract is another great one for stomach health. Good luck on your healing.
  • Thanks for this! I have been thinking of making a pie lately...in particular a non-dairy "cream pie"
  • Tazo Awake is a great black tea. I also like the Tazo Chai with some coconut creamer and a bit of stevia.
  • An lactose intolerant and I have all the symptoms you mention. I also have a gluten intolerance. It is often, that these two go hand in hand. It will pay off for you if you are strict with your diet and cut all dairy. there are many substitutions. If I happen to eat dairy on accident/restaurants like to put butter on…
  • Try using almond flour instead of rice flour. You won't need a binder. Check out : http://www.elanaspantry.com/ And have fun experimenting! I find the arrowhead mills pre-mix for baking works well and it isn't too dry, as well.
  • I am in...definitely need this, a great way to get motivated.
  • I do a lot of g-f oatmeal, rice noodles with a curry sauce and veggies (coconut milk and curry paste), fish, rice, salads and fruit.
  • Hey wendyapple! I am battling chin acne too. I haven't been as strict with my dairy or gluten intake. Once I get to stop taking coumadin (in one week and 2 days!) I plan to do a juice fast and detox. Ugh...hate skin issues :( I have been using zinc and chromium supplements to help, but I have been battling the same…
  • I had all the symptoms but tested negative after having been on the medication. I opted to take kelp as a supplement to help with some of the symptoms. There are many vitamin and herbal supplements out there. My issue was solved by changing my diet and taking supplements.
  • Awesome jgic! That is what I need to do, or else I am left wondering how to scarf some 500 calories at 9 p.m. on a weekday! Great advice.
  • It also has anti-bacterial properties...a great option as a skin moisturizer too. Gotta love being able to eat something you also apply to your skin
  • Apparently, Dr. Oz just featured coconut oil and so I am guessing that is why I keep seeing a lot about it. Here is a link to some info on using coconut oil in your cooking. I use it for baking, mostly...medium to high heat is the appropriate use of this oil, I believe. All oils have temperature points that make them…
  • I do not. But I did work with a woman who had this issue. Are you plagued with sinus infections? There are certain herbs that help to cut back on bacteria/infections. Things like oregano oil are wonderful. Have you seen a difference since going dairy free?
  • Good luck! I totally understand you on this one. I travel so much for work, and it is a huge challenge to keep up with my evening workouts and especially to eat right when I don't have my kitchen and the ability to cook for myself.
  • No taste at all. As far as I can tell, they are a simple add in to most things like smoothies and salads. Here is my favorite recipe using chia seeds: http://www.elanaspantry.com/raw-tapioca-pudding/
  • Wow, Wendy! The mouth sore comment is interesting! In fact, I get terrible cold sore outbreaks when I am eating wheat/gluten products. And I am noticing, after indulging in gelato this past weekend that I have sores inside my mouth/soreness (not to mention all the tummy troubles associated with eating dairy). Thanks for…
  • I make a raw and dairy free cashew cream sauce that is delicious over pasta and veggies. It reminds me of an alfredo type sauce but more fresh tasting (if that makes sense). I don't have many dairy free cookbooks. I have been blessed to have vegan friends that have passed on their recipes to me, and I use a number of…
  • Love this! And also a great idea...or else I take to ridiculous measures like eating pb and jelly from the jar. Yes...it gets disgusting. I think feminine products are a given...so... 1 acupuncture treatment (pre TOM...I swear by this) 1 bag smartfood white cheddar popcorn 1 bag Kettle baked potato chips 1 Vosges Red Fire…
  • Hourglass here! I hate the idea of being a pear, but that is where my body goes if I am not fit/active. I am 5' 6" and currently at 34, 28, 39 and I am working for a 34, 27, 38...Caution: tight curves ahead!
