  • Maybe it's water retention from your new weight lifting routine
  • What is a real split? MB_Positif, Is the PHUL approach found in one of the programs you recommended to me earlier? I've never heard of something like this.
  • Hmm, I will take note of the overhead press and cleans. I have a second gym membership that does have some bars that I think would allow me to do this. I will need to sign up with the trainer at that gym, so that I can be sure I am doing those correctly. I never attempt to do new exercises by myself, as I don't want to…
  • Okay, I will research those. Thanks. Until I am able to switch over into one of those programs, do you think that one day of rest (with a 6 mile run on those days) is enough recovery time between my current workouts? I'm eating at a deficit, so all of this strength training isn't going to build any muscle anyway, I just…
  • The gym doesn't have a squat rack that would allow me to do a free barbell squat. I suppose I could do squats with dumbbells? I'm also doing my deadlifts in the smith machine. I think that I'm using a sufficient amount of weight when I do my squats. I could probably add more on when I do my deadlifts, but I feel like it's…
  • The trainer did; however, my session with the trainer was an introductory hour session to get my familiar with the free weights. I feel like I see the other gym patrons doing so many more exercises.
  • did you try google? sometimes you can find the nutritional information for your dish on a recipe website, then you can just quick add however many calories the site says. usually, i'll pick the same dish served at a different restaurant, but i make sure to pick the dish that uses the most calories - just to be safe.
  • next week i will have lost 40 lbs in exactly 3 months.
  • get a bodymedia fit armband. it will log all of that activity for you!
  • last black friday, i went out and bought a lot of clothes in my goal size. i'm incredibly frugal, so the thought of wasting money on clothes i'll never wear pisses me off. i'm going to get my money's worth, damn it!
  • i have a bodymedia armband and i love it. i purchased mine because i was sick of trying to figure out how to log calories burned on the elliptical. the numbers they give you on the machine are inflated, and mfp's numbers are also unusually high. thanks to my armband, i know that i burn 1.7 calories a minute doing nothing,…
  • 40-60 minutes of strength training? how many sets and reps do you do? do you focus on arms one day, then core, and then legs? i can't fathom spending 40 minutes on strength training, and usually, i'm pretty tired after plugging away on the elliptical for an hour, so i spend 25 minutes doing the weight machines and leave.
  • what a sanctimonious post, ugh. if someone wants to open their diary and solicit advice, then they will do it; you aren't the diary police.
  • this is exactly how i do it. i know when i'm going to eat something heavy, so i'll compensate by having a smaller breakfast, or going to the gym. that way, i earn more calories to enjoy the things i'm craving. also, going over my caloric goal just makes my deficit smaller, and i hate feeling like i've cut into my hard work…
  • i noticed a difference 20 lbs into my progress. at my heaviest, i went up one pants size, but at 20 lbs down, i found that i needed a belt on some of the pants in my new size. at 30 lbs, i've found that i need a belt for every pair of pants in my new size! one day, i left the house in a hurry without a belt, and i was…
  • Wait a second, does your MFP show your exercise calories from Bodymedia without you plugging in your armband? Bodymedia shows my calories consumed, but there has always been a 5-10 minute delay, so I don't know what's going on with your stuff. :/ sorry.
  • i always try to eat at a 1000 calorie deficit, so on days that i go to the gym, my caloric intake will be 2500 because i'll burn 3500 for the entire day. when i don't go to the gym, i usually burn around 2700 calories, so i'll eat 1700 calories. if i ate at 2500 calories a day, my deficit would only be, like, 200 cals on…
  • i started at 245, am now at 215, and would like to get down to 185. i also opened my diary. i normally have more fruits in there, but i keep forgetting to buy more when i hit up the grocery store.
  • hmm, i'm not morbidly obese. i only have 40lbs to lose until i hit my goal weight. i've been on this lifestyle change for 5 or 6 weeks, and i'm already down nearly 20 lbs. i know that seems like a lot of weight lost in a short amount of time, but i gained a lot of that weight really quickly through my horrible diet and…
  • bump for replies
  • Why would I be unhealthy? I was using the weight machines 2-3x a week, but I kept reading that it's impossible to put on muscle at a calorie deficit, so I stopped because I thought it was pointless.
  • I have the same question. According to my armband, I burned 400 calories at the gym, but when I sync my armband to my computer, MFP will read that I earned an additional 900 calories from exercise. My daily caloric goal is 1700 calories, but with the exercise sync from Bodymedia, MFP has automatically adjusted and says I…
  • I've been pondering over this same question for days. Initially, I was strength training 2-3x a week, but I've stopped now since I won't see any progress while I'm eating at a calorie deficit. I'm still doing cardio 5-6 a week, though!
  • I'm 6'4" and currently at 235. I want to get down to 185, and then work on building muscle.
  • thanks for the prompt responses everyone! this is blowing my mind: i've been lurking on this site for awhile, and i still can't wrap my mind around that concept. even though it's working for me, i just don't understand how one can lose weight if they eat only a certain amount of calories. what's to stop someone from taking…
