  • I recently cut out dairy but not as part of any specific diet. It wasn't a choice I made lightly since I friggin love dairy I just got back from a long trip to Japan eating whatever I wanted, and managed to lose 10 pounds on the trip. I'm trying to keep that ball rolling and maybe even my gut flora on that kind of food,…
  • Erp, maybe this should have gone in Motivation and Support, but hopefully it reaches at least some of you out there
  • The paleo folks do love their bacon
  • The thing is that posting on these forums isn't just about sharing anecdotes for a pat on the back-- when you talk about a diet or a fitness regimen or a lifestyle change or juice cleanse or voodoo ritual, you're advocating it to a community who might use your advice in an attempt to reach any of their goals. Sure,…
  • Yeah, that's fair. And I'll sheepishly admit that after running estimates for myself, I were completely sedentary, a TDEE-500 would put me very slightly below estimated BMR. In any case though it sounds like we agree that modest reductions, rather than dramatic dips below BMR, are the way to go. At the very, very least,…
  • Whoa Take a bow. That's fantastic.
  • How about this for a study, by the way: http://brage.bibsys.no/nih/bitstream/URN:NBN:no-bibsys_brage_17906/1/Garthe%20IntJSportNutrExercMetabol%202011.pdf "Effect of Two Different Weight-Loss Rates on Body Composition" It goes into pretty good detail about how much fat vs. lean mass is burned at various deficit levels.
  • Sorry, you mean the guy who was warned every step of the way not to starve himself by his doctors? I'm not claiming you'd go into immediate organ failure eating below BMR, I'm wondering why you would go into such a steep calorie deficit as to eat below your basic daily needs. A modest deficit from TDEE should be…
  • Here is a working definition of BMR for you If you agree with that definition, I don't see why you'd think it would be okay to eat less than what is required for minimum bodily function If you think that definition is somehow flawed, I'm open to hear what you think is wrong about it We're talking about BMR, not TDEE
  • The longer answer is that you should never eat below your BMR, since this is the baseline of what you need just to stay alive with functioning organs But to your actual question, "why am I not losing weight doing what I'm doing", the answer could be: you've estimated your BMR wrong, you've estimated your caloric…
  • Your BMR is what your body requires to function Don't eat less than what your body requires to function
  • I've been a daily weigher since the beginning, and have logged it every step of the way. Its been very useful in figuring out trends. Never really freaked out over it, even if my weight seemed to go up a lot over just 24 hours, because I now know from experience that those anomalies even back out just as quickly Anyway I'm…
  • I started at 325 and am currently hovering around 220; my initial goal (which seemed unobtainable at the start) was to get to 225, and right now my goal is to work at a slower pace to get down to 205 by spring. I still think for most brands I'll be a Large shirt size, since Medium is just never going to get…
  • Yeah! That, or she was a really good saleswoman, since she essentially both got in a bit of flattery and steered me away from the sale section. Still, medium size shorts are medium size shorts. I'll take it!
  • Wow, thanks for all the support guys. It feels like my birthday or something. MyFitnessPal has always been such a huge motivation Cheers
  • Strongly encourage! For me it was all about adding one habit at a time. Encourage them to stick with it at every step of the way. If they eventually threaten to quit due to lack of progress, tell them to keep going, and maybe try a simple diet change like cutting soda. Inch by inch!
  • From your original post, it sounds like what you're actually trying to do is bulk up and slim down at the same time; I'm not surprised that the end result has been spinning your wheels. Focus your energy on slimming down. Do a program with a bigger emphasis on cardio Edit: I should say I'm in a position pretty similar to…
  • Okay, look. OP, you're trying to solve your pudge-problem by bulking. But even a carefully calibrated bulk is going to add some fat in addition to any muscle you gain, and when you do finally get around to losing that fat, you're going to lose some of that muscle along with it. As long as you've still got fat hanging…
  • I like the aggressiveness, but you will need to be able to take it easy on yourself at least once in a while. Remember, the whole fitness push doesn't implode because of one moment, day, or week of weakness. Its never too late to get back on track
  • Man, I like this answer. A lot. Not for its brusqueness, but because every time I reevaluate my current fitness regimen, I see a lot of advice designed to keep you from spinning your wheels, i.e. spending a lot of time and energyto get middling returns. Its easy to forget that as long as your goal is generally to get…
  • I hope everyone here can recognize this for the defeatist claptrap that it is. At best this is grasping for flimsy validation for the fat acceptance movement. A majority of people gain back a good amount of weight because they abandon the "diets" that got them there in the first place. The body does not magically start…
  • The only thing that study would prove is that fat people with persecution complexes tend to remain fat people with persecution complexes.
  • Hey, 6'4'' guy here, currently in the 220s, started at 325. There's a couple of things I want to mention to you: -- A lot of people lose their first "few" pounds very rapidly. For a guy my size, that meant that the first 30 pounds came off almost instantly. The next 70, though, have come off very slowly over the course of…
  • Hey, just wanted to lend my opinion as someone who hates those muscleheads who sneer at cardio for weight loss. I waited until I was pretty much at my hundred pound goal (but wish I started so much earlier!) to hire a competent trainer within my budget. I now do cardio about four times a week, and weight lifting twice a…
  • I second the protein, too! I started seeking it out when I started lifting, and it is UNREAL how much it fills me up and keeps me satisfied when I just try to eat as much protein as my calorie limit allows in a day
  • Weight training! Agh I got so turned off by all the meatheads on here who hate on cardio and tell you to lift five times a week instead Wish I had found some middle ground and started a good lifting regimen on top of my cardio (which I still love!) a long time ago instead of waiting til the end
