All I can say is "WOW!" great work!

Nice! Keep it up!

WOW! Great progress!

I was drinking 6+ cans a day during the week, more on the weekends. Don’t stop cold turkey unless you really like headaches (caffeine withdrawal). I went to 4 cans for a couple of months and then slowly weaned myself off that. I’ll now have 2-3 cans a week. I’ll consider myself off when I don’t even have that (like when I…

The processed foods are real killers for weight control. It's great that you have a farmer's market close by. Also look for "local" stores, stores that buy locally (instead of the big chain supermarkets that get everything from giant warehouses.) Frozen fruits and veggies are fine as long as they're not overly processed…

Hi Helen, How long do you have the "Idle Time" set to? I have mine at 30 minutes and it's almost nagging :ohwell: . Dave DeCoursey (feel free to add as a teammate)
-
Hi Heather, I just added you, Dave DeCoursey

I try and carry things in my left hand, my UP is on my right. When I'm shopping, pushing a cart it doesn't seem to count those (no arm movement).
-
You can add me dave decoursey

Hi Kelly, I just sent you a request! I was trying to figure out how to add people.

It’s a great goal! I really can’t add more than what has been said, but I’ll vote for Runner’s World Smart Coach, it’s a nice program (I’m used it for my first half and now I’m using it for a full.) I know a lot of the runners on the Runner’s World Loop use Hal Higdon plans. Good luck! Dave D

Sorry to hear that! Dealing without B&J...Go for a run! Make it a long, slow one, or a fast, kick your butt one! (I would go for long, slow, it gives me time to deal with life and why you're better off without the fool!) I find running solves a lot of problems if I give it enough time.

Lots of great advice! I made a mistake in my first half, I put on a sleeveless shirt and I paid for it for a whole week (chaffing). I know it’s been said before, but start slow. I’m a walk/runner too (right now) and I always start at the back. The “rush” is much slower in the back so it’s easy to keep the pace down a…

Welcome to MFP! I must say, your accent is delightful! (I’ve always loved the Aussie accent from Olivia Newton-John to Hugh Jackman!) Feel free to add me as a friend. Dave

Awesome! You look great!

Add hill work. Keep your running pace the same, but make it up hill and then walk down to recover. Repeat. I've been told on some runnig forums and running friends that hills are the best way to build speed. (Plus when you hit the hills in a race they aren't so bad.)

The stretching before working out is very old school. You're more likely to strain something stretching cold muscles. You're much better off stretching once everything is all warm up. If you use something like TRX for strength, the stretching is actually part of the workout.

Well, I just finished training for my first half (on Sunday)! The heat and humidity was a killer on the long runs, so that’s one thing to look at. As far as your leg, if it keeps hurting, find a good Chiropractor! I ended up having tendonitis in my Achilles’ and my Chiro did wonders keeping me in training while getting my…

And don't forget party lines!

If they have a METS display, use that as a guide to the effort. The dreadmill will help you burn about 100 calories per mile so if you’re on the Elliptical using the same METS level you’ll burn just as many calories in the same amount of time.
-
Seeing a doc is excellent advice! Also, ice after you workout even on the elliptical. Make sure you stretch after (before only if you warm up the muscles first.) I had knee issues, doc told me it’s nothing but old age  so I went to the Chiropractor and she got the knee to stop hurting but uncovered the real problem…

WAY TO GO!!!! I did my first 2 miles of continuous running last weekend. I’m not fast either, around 15:00 minute miles, but just doing it. Good luck on your 5K!

I’m training for a half-marathon so I’m walking/running 5 days a week. I work with a trainer twice a week. If I’m in a recovery week, I’ll go to the gym on Sunday otherwise my long run on Saturday (13+ miles) is enough for the weekend.

Looks like there are a lot of people going for their first! Mine will be August 19th in Providence, RI! My goal is to finish it before they kick me off the course!
-
I thought mine was bad and opening at 7 on the weekends, of course they don't open until 5:30 during the week! I would love the 4:00 AM opening. (But then they've been known to have problems getting people to work at 5:30...)

I have found my HRM and MFP to be pretty close (which surprised me). I know the equipment at the gym over estimates a lot. If you use a HRM, make sure that it's data is accurate (your age, weight, etc).
-
like crap! I tried to take a couple of different days off in the past couple of weeks and just wasn't right until I did something!
-
You can add me if you like.

As a kid, I rode my bike, walked, and ran. During the summer I swam a lot, plus worked on a farm! Dave
