  • I also just had RAI for toxic adenoma. While hyper I am very bloated and it is horrible. Exercise tolerance is poor too. Appetite is out of control. Hoping I will be normal again someday. I was briefly normal earlier this year and I lost 5 pounds (probably mostly water) very quickly and it was amazing because I actually…
  • Glad to hear you've found a diet that makes you feel better. Do you eat grains? If so, which ones, out of curiosity? I am experimenting with less refined carbs and sugars to see if I feel better. I don't follow a paleo diet---I still like and eat oats, dairy, legumes...
  • I will let Taubes defend himself: http://www.meandmydiabetes.com/2013/05/20/gary-taubes-explains-thermodynamics-to-jillian-michaels/
  • I think it would be interesting to see a survey of diets for that reason---humans really can survive on many diets. And thrive on quite a few too.
  • You make a claim. You don't back it up. You can spout off whatever they want, but when you don't back it up and and instead turn to insulting the person (me) asking for the supporting evidence, what do you think you've demonstrated? Presumably you have an opinion on what constitutes a health diet, and this forum is meant…
  • and when you do get evidence, you call the messenger a moron. nice.
  • Oh boy, let's get in the thermo argument---or not. First of all, Taubes does not claim this---if so please please please prove this---give me the quotes from his writing to prove this. Secondly, based on your 'awesome' arguments (in addition to calling Gary Taubes a moron) earlier in this thread it is not worth my time to…
  • Some paleo people eat tubers and such. I think the concern (granted the all or nothing black and white view of it makes me balk) is that flooding your system with starch -> glucose --> insulin spikes. then the liver makes TGs and this affects LDL particles and all that. ancestral diets are really interesting. Compare the…
  • Surprised no one mentioned (or I missed it?) earlier in the threads the great reviews of the nutrition literature written by Gary Taubes. http://garytaubes.com/ Supports some of what the paleo crowd says, from a macronutrient stand point. Regardless of your feelings about Paleo diet---he is an outstanding science writer.…
  • Well I ran it in 1:55. so I would say the plan worked!! (my goal was 2 hours, but predicted finish was 1:54-1:57 based on previous 10ks)
  • here is some information that is not just opinion. http://www.runnersworld.com/weight-loss/running-v-walking-how-many-calories-will-you-burn
  • One alternative to doing the 10k, would be to do a series of 5ks---your progress would be more comparable and there is nothing like hitting a PR to motivate! also if you haven't been running much, you want to be careful increasing volume too quick, as that can lead to injury if your body has not had time to adapt to the…
  • Thanks for responding! Some of my runner coworkers have also impressed on me the importance of the long runs as well. :D
  • Oh my word, your post was totally off the wall---in a really wonderful way, then I read your username and totally busted up. I take it you're interested in ancient human ancestors! so awesome. I read a really great book about early language called The Unfolding of Language. Could not put it down.
  • I don't know much about sign language---was watching a documentary that included many deaf people as principle characters in the piece, and it mentioned totally in passing that some of the kids at this deaf school--now bear in mind these people were going to school back in the 1960s, and not 18th century or something---and…
  • yeah, the long slow run (emphasis on slow) is really key to increasing your endurance and ability to log miles. NYRR also has some running plans posted on their site. between hal higdon, runners world and that, you should be able to find a training plan that sings to you. The rule that gets thrown around though is to not…
  • Hal Higdon training plans are good---i agree with above poster. In fact I will be starting the intermediate plan at the end of the month. :D
  • i started running about 2 years ago, and it took a long time to really get my body used to it---not getting shin splints, knees not going weird after a few miles. SOme of it was technique, some finding the right shoes, and some of it really was just getting into shape. Half marathon is an awesome goal---but if you just…
  • I don't know many celebrities that don't look like aliens with big head and little bodies. There must be some fit and sexy ones. I cannot think of any right now. :-/ Wait...Maybe Jessica Biel? But even so i have read she's 5'7" and 120, which is still pretty small. But who knows if that is correct.
  • I can at least think of some sort of reason for most of those things on the list (bread= refined, carbs, blah blah; swordfish and heavy metal; strawberries and antifungals and other shiz) but canned tomatoes???? anyone with an answer as to how those are on this list??
  • If you have high arches----have you tried super feet inserts? They are about 30 bucks---but if they salvage shoes you already bought, that might be worth it to try? I have high arches and really like them. they help keep my shins from hurting too.
  • thanks! I love red curry and a put loads of veggies in it along with some protein. I thought its achilles heal was the fat. but perhaps not!
  • Bread is a treat now, not a staple. And I drink less alcohol.
  • I decided to get a trainer for a few sessions to help make sure I use the gym equipment safely---but I only got a couple sessions and so it is just a one time cost and then i will just have the cost of the gym. nutrition information is all over the internet and this forum can be a pretty good place to start. there are lots…
  • I have a friend who is renting one. I joined a gym to use their treadmills----they are really really nice---a lot nicer than anything I could afford. But if you just need one part of the year, I wonder if renting could get you a nicer one and only for when you need it?
  • Seems like a gross overestimate, but... http://www.mycaloriesburned.com/calories-burned-trail-running/
  • If you want to get faster you might want to try things like weight exercises (squats, bulgarian squats, lunges, etc) and some tempo runs (where you warm up, then run fast for 10-15 minutes, then slow for the last 10-15 minutes to cool down. I dropped a couple minutes off my 5k following this advice.
