Start by tracking what you are eating, just to gain a sense of awareness about where you're at. Set your MFP goals to an attainable level (e.g. half a pound a week, or even maintenance so that you at least stop gaining) Start with small, gentle, sustainable changes: swapping soda for water, fried for grilled, potatoes for…

I posted this last week. You might find it comforting! http://happiness-project.com/happiness_project/2012/05/quiz-are-you-an-abstainer-or-a-moderator/ "A piece of advice I often see is, “Be moderate. Don’t have ice cream every night, but if you try to deny yourself altogether, you’ll fall off the wagon. Allow yourself to…

In the past week?! Umm... I don't think portion control is your main problem! Focus on cutting this stuff out first!
-
That's encouraging. I haven't had any problems so far, so I'm trying to trust that week five will be doable too!
-
Did you go? How was it? I have my last run of week 4 tomorrow... can't wait! A tip if you have problems making excuses... go every other day, no matter what. If you go '3 times a week' you're giving yourself the extra psychological hurdle of having to decide which days to go. Just go every other day and take the decision…

Yes, exercise is good. It doesn't have to be wild boar hunting though!
-
Try the last 30 or 40 years. Eat what your grandparents ate, i.e. real, unprocessed, homecooked food, including grains, and you'll be on top form!
-
So you can eat more! (plus the multitude of health benefits)

Sending you a friend request. I'm doing W3 day 3 today!

You're welcome! The great thing about the article is that it reminds us that one way isn't necessarily better than the other. The key is to know which you are and work with it! (PS: even as an 'abstainer' this tends to mean I will abstain from buying certain things or keeping them in my house on a day to day basis. When…

Lucky?! I'd give anything to be able to do moderation! Oh! To be able to buy a jar of Nutella and just have a serving once a week or so! A dream!
-
Exactly. It probably isn't a problem for short term weight loss, but you'd be better learning eating strategies you can stick with for the rest of your life.

I think it probably really is that 'simple'. BUT! Not so easy. Maintaining weight loss is notoriously hard. After all, if you're over your 1850 by just 50 cals per day, the weight will creep back on. 1850 might seem like a really easy goal when you've been eating less, but long term, it will take an effort to stick to it.…

I don't know anyone who got fat from eating fruit.
-
This. It allows me wiggle room to keep on track with my calorie goals. Those extra 200/300 cals are the difference between deprivation and sustainability for me.
-
Me too. Mine comes in at around 450 out of a total of between 1400-1600. I prefer to taper down and be low on energy while I sleep and wake up hungry and ready to fuel myself for the day!
-
You're right. Apparently sugary drinks are the only foodstuff directly associated with obesity.

Since when did people in the US have long life expectancies? Have you not heard of how long people live in the Mediterranean? The US is behind most countries in Europe on health and life expectancy scores. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_life_expectancy
-
Yes, I've travelled all over the US. Of course some people (usually the wealthiest and best educated) have the resources to achieve a healthy lifestyle despite their environment, but the vast majority don't. In the 50s, Americans were satisfied with normal sized portions, because that was all that was available. I don't…

Sorry, maybe i wasn't clear. I was using 'you' to talk about people in general, rather than you personally.
-
Of course it is possible to be part of the 5%, but I don't think that semantics are what makes the difference. Let's have a bit of humility here... given the low success rate, this whole 'I'm not on a diet, this is a new lifestyle' just rings a bit hollow to me. You can justify saying that once you've lost the weight and…
-
Lol... when people say this, or that they are doing a 'lifestyle change' they just mean 'this time I'm not going to fail like all the times before'. The sad truth is that whatever you call it, 95% of people who lose weight don't keep it off long term.
-
Have patience. Weight comes off over months, not weeks.

No sé si hay gente del país basco aquí.... Había muy pocos en el estado español cuando yo estaba viviendo en barcelona. Suerte! (por cierto, me encanta tu tierra)
-
Haha! You can tell you are a man. Celery and cucumber aren't going to satisfy anyone at that time of the month!
-
Porridge oats, vegetable soup, spinach/cabbage curries...
-
Alcohol and portions

This. In fact, it's logging the BAD days that is most important and helpful. It makes me aware of the consequences of my decisions and motivates me to do better.

Lol.
