  • Hmm, I've been using Chrome for a couple of years. But just now it did save for me using Chrome.
  • I don't really use the term abstinence. I guess the basic definition is that one is abstinent when he/she is not compulsively eating. I find that I don't struggle with compulsively eating when I pray for knowledge of my higher power's will for me, and then use the power given to me to follow through on what I sense I…
  • I agree that one will find a real solution that works when they are willing follow the principals given in the AA big book. Just substitute "compulsive eaters" for "alcoholics" and "compulsive eating" or "food" for "drink" and after a bit you will see that it all fits for compulsive overeating (or make similar…

  • Welcome, Margaret! Congrats on getting started! I hope you are getting good information and have found a sponsor. Check out oabigbooksolutiongroup.com if you want to focus more on not compulsive eating. Our group focuses solely on the 12 steps in the Alcoholics Anonymous book to recover from compulsive eating. No food…
  • I listen to the speaker meetings on that phone number sometimes!! But note that that access code just changed!! it is now 492557# And below are some more phone meetings in case anyone is interested: http://www.oabigbooksolutiongroup.org, then click on meetings, then phone meetings. Here is a Foundation/Overview phone…
  • Hi Fallhiker, I am in a group that only studies the blue book (AA big book) and don't count calories. If you are interested in only following the big book, let me know! However, here is some information on it: http://www.oabigbooksolutiongroup.org gives information and there is a list of face to face and phone meetings.…
  • Hi! I would suggest listening to the following recorded OA meetings where the speaker does both AA and OA. She gives her phone number in the recording so you could call her about getting a sponsor who does both AA and OA. She does a fantastic job explaining all 12 steps in four meetings (1 hour each) so anyone cal listen…
  • So sorry about your situation! Ditto what others said about staying with your parents. And please continue with AA, it will help you with everything, not just drinking. I have been using the AA big book with compulsive overeating and it has changed my life and many others, too! I will pray for you now, Lisa G- recovered…
  • My best advice to you, Emily, is to get a sponsor to help you go through the 12 steps! I went to a few face to face mtgs but found there are many more available sponsors on certain OA phone mtgs. If you need more information about OA as a whole, you can call this recording of an OA phone mtg. Call 209-255-1099, access code…
  • Try to determine why are you are binge eating. If you are bored or stressed think back on why... did something happen to make you resentful or irritable, angry or fearful? Binge eating can be a symptom of a different problem. Dealing with those issues will probably stop the cravings and binges I learned all this from going…

  • I didn't see how to delete my original post, however, I clicked on the settings for the "chit chat" section and I am not following that section anymore (since that's where most of the notifications were coming from). Yay!!
  • Oh, that's why I didn't see the invite!! I made the mistake of commenting on two really popular threads (the NSV and drop a word, add a word) and now those notifications clog everything up so I don't see the real stuff I want to see. Does anyone know if there is a way to "unsubsribe to a specific thread?
  • Ok, thanks for the update!
  • I am not, but good luck to you!
  • Think of it like alcohol... many people can drink moderately without becoming addictive to it. Only after years of use do they become addicted/allergic to it and no longer can stop even when they want to. It is similar for sugar, or more generally speaking - compulsive eating or overeating.
  • Here is something to consider with the cravings...like humblemonkey said, try to determine why are you craving. If you are bored or stressed think back on why... did something happen to make you resentful or irritable, angry or fearful? Also think about times you do eat too much. If, when you honestly want to, you cannot…
  • GrokRockStar - Did you start the private group on MFP?
  • Wow, you look amazing!! Thanks for sharing your journey and photos!
  • Yay for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Hi nickelpickle (and anyone else who can relate), I totally understand where you are coming from. Like you, I used to think about food ALL the time, it controlled me! If, when you honestly want to, you cannot quit eating, or when eating you have little control over how much you eat, then you are probably a compulsive…
  • I agree with what others have said. I will add that if you are binge eating for emotional reasons, you can binge on just about anything - like veggies - not just your favorite trigger foods. If you find that you really cannot stop, even when you honestly try, then you might need a 12 step program like Alocholics Anonymous…
  • Lots of good advice here. I will just add this... When I first started MFP, somebody posted "I am not motivated, but I AM resolved," which really inspired me... and little and by little I changed it to "Being resolved finally made me motivated!" Good luck!
  • Hi, Here is something else to consider, since you talk about food addiction and not being able to stop eating. If, when you honestly want to, you cannot quit eating, or when eating you have little control over how much you eat, then you are probably a compulsive overeater. Compulsive eating is a progressive illness of the…
  • I have had many spiritual awakenings in my life as well, but I cannot deny that for myself, I did have a significant spiritual awakening which was the direct result of going through all the steps of AA/OA. I hope that I have more in the future, either from living out the 12 steps or through other spiritual means. I don't…
  • I agree with michellesema.. a private group on facebook would be more easily accessible, at least for those on facebook.
  • Yes, I totally get you. My dh actually loses weight if he does NOT work out (he is blessed with high metabolism). This can be very frustrating because even if he wants to, he cannot begin to understand my struggle with food. It has helped me to find other people that truly understand how we truly want to stop eating too…
  • Bump! Great ideas here! (And it really changes the perspective to think that I've lost 4 gallons of milk so far).
  • Thinking about or actually finding someone else to help will get me focused on something else besides myself and what is bothering me. This is how I do it: If I am restless, irritated, bored, etc., I stop and think for minute to decide why I think I deserve to eat.... happy, angry, resentful, afraid, selfish, etc.?…
  • I just just discovered Overeaters Anonymous (OA) this fall. I have found a fabulous OA group that offers many phone meetings with members in the US and other countries. You can call and listen to recorded meetings (to check it out in a true anonymous fashion) or call a live meeting and just listen. The focus of these…
