  • @mainelylisa Sometimes we romanticize what we want and can get depressed and in the past sad drinking and mad drinking was one of the ways I dealt. I have replaced some of the empty feelings with further activity. I am in the pool Monday to Friday before 6AM and swim for over an hour. Strangely a lot of the guys swimming…
  • @RubyRed427 @MissMay @mainelylisa It is always fun to think back to the way we played and proceeded thru our childhood. I was a chubby child who lost most of the weight by high school and certainly by the time I went into the service. The memories of being a chubby kid though lingered for a long time and I often wondered…
  • @joha5603 I cant embrace after 90 days being AF drinking to see how it affects me. If I am at 3 months I wouldn't crawl back into that hole for an experiment. @RubyRed427 I noticed the qualifier "drinking" best friend. You get to the point you cant build a friendship on drinking till you do things that could embarrass you…
  • You mentioned you were increasing your mileage, I know this is the expensive option but I rotate pairs and buy two pairs at a time I have each pair longer so the cost evens out after the beginning and it lets you have time for them to dry or recover after you run. I am at about 30 miles a week and during the summer…
  • @KKHKISHZKH considering Gin was my mouth wash at the time, take a mouthful swish around and then swallow great way to start the day. Never minded the brushed teeth taste the gin used to be the same burn as the listerine . Glad you avoided the temptation it so much more satisfying to look back after temptation avoided than…
  • @rubyred427 I wont presume to understand your relationship, but I would like to recount something I had to learn to accept. We got married I was 26 and drinking and didn't stop till I was 60 and during that time my wife never didn't get into a car with me, never chastised me at family gatherings for being and saying things…
  • @donimfp just as on TV ages ago we had the wayback machine I am going to give you a glimpse in the wayforward machine. I have been AF for a longer period of time and within the first 6 months my body shed dozens of pounds of fluid my BP kept improving my levels of exercise increased and you guessed it my sleep patterns…
  • @joha5603 I think like everything else time will heal all wounds and people will come to realize that you are AF and if they drink or not or if they ask or not it just doesn't matter to you. Since I am AF over 10 years and also over 70 my memory can be a little sketchy about the early days :o We were out to dinner Saturday…
  • @lorrainequiche59 You're right in putting yourself first, if we aren't right we are not any use to anyone else. This does highlight how dangerous our drinking could become as we risked our wellbeing as well as others. My mom in situations like this use to say " There but for fortune goes you or I". I did things looking…
  • @lorrainequiche59 I am sorry to hear of your friends problems, especially the health concerns that make it so difficult for anybody to focus on much else. I have been with friends who are fighting health problems and tried to be there for them and they reacted according to how they were feeling. It wasn’t always easy to…
  • Just wanted to relate a short story since so many of us are so aware of how much better we are feeling. This past winter I came down with a flu or virus bug. The room was spinning my body ached like I was hit with a bat and thrown down the stairs and I was weak to the point standing was a chore. It was a realization that…
  • 😀I am only counting age years, 40 years of drinking. Besides I don’t remember half of what went on during the drinking years
  • @joha5603 I wish I could have figured it out as soon as you did. I had a health issue when I was 60 before I figured out I had to quit or face the possibility of a stroke from extreme hypertension and sitting in the corner drooling 🤤 on myself
  • welcome to all the newcomers, glad you dropped in. This is usually a pretty busy site which seems to be quiet right now. We are openly expressive sharing both our concerns as well as our victories we go from people who are on day one to posters who are AF for over ten years and everything in the middle.
  • @RubyRed427 I got the shivers reading that, the mind works in strange ways and after over 10 years the raw emotions and depressions and a lot of the fears I felt in the beginning are long gone and truthfully forgotten. At my age I have lost good friends in the real world and felt the sorry deep pain you describe and over…
  • Sorry I hit post prematurely I wanted to finish by saying as hard as it may be now it improves and becomes more manageable and the remarkable changes in your life will reinforce your choice daily
  • To everyone here I understand that this is a personal problem and journey I am 70 years old and so most of the people I associate with who are AF are older and have been AF longer and most relate a common trend. We don’t think about alcohol at all anymore. We go out in mixed groups some including my wife still enjoy wine…
  • @iRun_Butterfly welcome and rambling on is fine as you deal with multiple emotions and thoughts keep tumbling out. You will adjust as you go, I drank continuously for about 40 years and had to decide to stop for Health reasons over 10 years ago. One day I couldn’t imagine not drinking and the next day I was AF. I was…
  • I don’t have down mood swings much anymore but I can get some. I have a good gym downstairs if I have mood swings I head downstairs and work out break a sweat which then makes me feel a shower is necessary. After the shower feeling good mood better and I am smiling again
  • @hwg63 life is good enjoy every day and they will continue to improve. You will be embracing this as your lifestyle and it becomes completely normal to live this way
  • I just dropped in the see what was happening after a wonderful day I swam early this morning. I had an appointment with a cardiac clinic thru a local hospital where they told me I was great for a younger man exceptional for a 70 YO went for a 5 mile run and a fitness class and was pretty happy. I get here and open the site…
  • Happy Monday all This is a process and for me at first it was as you say daunting to think about not ever drinking again and I had NA beers and mocktails to feel "normal" when I was out, and was hesitant to say anything to some friends. As time passed I realized most friends just accept you for what and where in your life…
  • Hi everyone I am AF since 5/22/2008 with the exception of 2 New Year’s Eve where I had a flute of champagne one dinner in Aruba where i had 2 wines and my daughters wedding in 2014 where I had too much wine. I am fortunate that I could have a few drinks 🍷 and be back AF the next day without any problems. I have gone…
  • I have not been posting this week since my grandkids are here and the days are full and the evenings are napping. I wanted to throw my 2 cents in. I have read the posts this month and understand that referring to alcohol as poison may be thought of as an attack on those that moderate. Some of the posters here know my…
  • @MissMay Yay to You indeed that is a great change in moderating consumption congratulations on a great July I have noticed that many posts concerning moderation are followed by the feeling that we are professing that alcohol is poison and that makes it harder to be mindfully moderate. Unfortunately for some of us Alcohol…
  • Good Afternoon All, August is an exciting month as it represents a fresh start for goals and changes we want to make. I am increasing my exercise levels and rededicating myself to losing the last 25 pounds I wanted to lose. I am AF now since 5/22/2008 and fortunately it isn't an issue any more. For any of you who had been…
  • @JenT304 😂 older folks that makes me laugh a bit I do wonder where the time went
  • @whitpauly congratulations on your decision and your AF days
  • Listening to Demi Lovato brought up a lot of thoughts and feelings and I wanted to share some perspective on my sobriety. I started drinking when I was 18 1966 I was in the military and it seemed the two things we always had access to was smoking and drinking. I was stationed in many places and met many people but the…
  • @erikNJ I understand the literal meanings and I support anyone who is making an effort no matter the level of success I just wanted to point out somewhat that possibly drinking less and moderation may not be the same thing. There were times I drank less but alcohol still had an unshakeable hold on my life. I knew at all…
