  • For low-carb advice/recipes I really love the south beach diet book. You could be gluten intolerant (not allergic/celiac)- there's no way to test for it other than to just avoid it and see if you feel better. My little sister had some stomach issues - I'll spare the details- and since she's started to avoid gluten, she…
  • I think they both have their place- heavy weights for building muscle and light weights/more reps for cardio. My trainer has me do both and I see her twice a week: One day a week- heavy, heavy, heavy! 3 sets of 10-12 reps (part of a circuit) One day a week we do lighter weights- 2 sets of continuous reps for 30 seconds…
  • According to MFP I should be under 1200 Net to reach my goal, but it's very hard and I haven't really lost anything... the only way I find myself getting under that is if I burn 500 cals minimum/day. On another note-- the only thing that really works for me is restricting carbs and sugar, so that's my REAL plan and I'm…
  • I just finished my first race last week (I was sooo nervous, by the way!) and my goal was just to finish without having to stop for walk breaks. I did stop twice- once for water and once to stretch out a side stitch, but otherwise I was happy to finish my first 10k in 68 mins. I'm THRILLED with that! My point is--you get…
  • Wow, that's amazing!! Congratulations! :flowerforyou:
  • Ha! I always say, "If Beyonce has time to exercise, so do I!!" To the point of scheduling it-- this is a huge tool that keeps my butt in that gym. I'm sure you have a phone/computer/old school journal with a calendar function. Use it! I schedule time for the gym like I schedule work meetings and I do *NOT* move them. Not…
  • Ugh! Trying to maintain or lose weight in college is tough- especially if you are on the meal plan. I found the only way for me to truly lose weight was by lowering my carbohydrate/sugar intake. I read the South Beach Diet years ago, and it really opened my eyes to how your body metabolizes different foods. Once I hit a…
  • Just an update--- I ran my first 10k at 68 minutes!! I'm thrilled. I'm sore. I'm exhausted. I'm proud... what an awesome experience!! :flowerforyou:  :glasses:
  • What I find most interesting about this topic is everyone's height and weight in proportion to their measurements. I'm on the "heavier" side of the BMI for a 5'3 person, and I like my measurements much more than my weight!! I'm about to throw this damn scale out... 5'3" Fluctuate daily 132-134lbs Bust- 36" Waist 27" Hips…
  • I just realized by reading all of your measurements that I have been measuring my hips completely wrong lol!!! What I was calling my "butt" measurements are actually my hips. Whoops!! :blushing: :blushing:
  • Great post!! Unfortunately, I find that the most nutritious and fresh foods are often the most expensive. Love the crock pot idea- I do that too in the fall/winter. Soups & stews are your friend! I need to start prepping those and bringing them to work for lunch, so I'm not tempted to by a $15+ salad. (Damn you, New York!)…
  • I should have been more specific. I would recommend cutting UNREFINED carbs and ADDED sugar. I'm not talking about sweet potatoes or strawberries, I'm talking about white bread, white pasta, white rice... food so processed that it's sugars are absorbed directly into the bloodstream and stored as fat. Studies show that…
  • You have to change your diet more. You are probably gaining muscle, but the fact that most of your fat is in your belly makes me think you need to cut down on carbs and sugar. You know what they say: weight loss is 80% diet and 20% exercise. And "no more supper!?!?!" That's not a good idea LOL!! Just have a healthy supper-…
  • Thank you again r_kraft! I was planning on just having a little coffee before the run. Typically if I eat anything before I run I get a killer side-stitch! My boyfriend is running with me and is a pretty great runner, so I'm hoping he will motivate me! Also, my personal trainer has volunteered to join me as well. At the…
  • Doesn't that depend on the amount of weight though? Maybe I should have been more specific, but if you're a beginner and have jut bought dumbbells/barbells you want to go through the motions with a light weight first, get your form, and then move onto heavy weights, no? There are some good exercises in there! I think it's…
  • Barbells/Dumbbells are greater than the 30 Day Shred? I don't get it...
  • Thank you both for the tips!! I'm stressing a bit; not sure what I've gotten myself into. Some people are telling me to carb-load the night before, but I can't see how that would be helpful. Wouldn't that just weigh me down?
  • No problem!! The book has some pretty good recipes too. The one I like best is jazzing up Greek yogurt to make a dessert. I have a serious sweet tooth, and the book recommends taking a dollop of nonfat Greek yogurt, adding 1 packet of Truvia (or splenda,) unsweetened coacoa powder, 1/2 tsp of vanilla extract and mixing it…
  • I agree! It's all relative to how you look and feel too. And thank you for the compliments! I've been working hard, so it's nice to see some pay-off :)
  • For a home workout, I'd get a video like Jillian Michael's 30 day shred or Insanity. Also- Kayla Itness Bikini Body Guide is great! All you need are some weights, a mat, and a chair! You can download it from her website- I think it's about $60.
  • ^^^^This... plus, I figure people can see me whether they know my weight or not, so what's the difference. HW: 137 CW: 133 GW: 125 LW: 127 Having said that... I've looked much leaner at 132 than I have at 127 because I put on some muscle, baby!! I'd rather weigh more and look better, am I right? ... maybe I should skip the…
  • Wow! That's amazing... I just signed up for my first 10K as well (Run 10 Feed 10) and I have no idea what I'm doing!! I can barely run 5k without getting winded. Any suggestions for a first time runner? I'm trying to "train," but running is not my strong-suit. I'm built for speed, not for distance... and I have a tough…
  • I can't speak about your thyroid issue, BUT I am a huge fan of the South Beach Diet, and I WOULD recommend reading the book. It explains how your body metabolizes different variations of food- not just carbs, but also fat, protein, sugar etc. It's only "no carb" for 2 weeks, which is easy to get through. If you can do it…
  • THIS! You have to let them sweat out the bitterness with some salt before you do anything else with them. Don't forget to rinse & pat dry. I like to use them in an a lasagne in place of noodles. Slice them thin (1/2 to 1/4" thick) and layer them with crushed tomatoes, sautéed shallots, low-fat cheese, fresh basil... lots…
  • 28 years old here! Open diary (open book, really!) and I'd love to "lose" about 10lbs, but I'm starting to think the scale wont budge as much as my body measurements. Feel free to add! I'm pretty new... really just trying to hold myself accountable to a food diary. I freakin' LOVE to eat, so that is a big struggle for me!!…
  • I have the same problem! It's very frustrating to know my actual weight. I fluctuate constantly between 132 & 134, and I know that you can't gain or lose 2 lbs in a day. I think unless the gain/loss stays consistent, it's most likely water. When I start fluctuating between 135 & 137, that's when I know i have a problem! I…
  • Exactly! Having said that, the more toned your legs are, the leaner they look- even if they are the same size. I've also noticed this with my arms. They are always 11-11.5" circumference- but when I tone them, they look much "thinner" because the shape is better.
  • Unfortunately, there is no way to spot reduce. After accepting a job with a celebrity chef and gaining 7 lbs, I ended up hiring a personal trainer to help get me on track. I lost the 7 lbs (although I continue to fluctuate) but I'm never happy with my legs. Sidenote-- I'm only 5'3", so they're never going to be long/lean…
  • I typically go with a vodka, club soda, & lime. If I'm craving a margarita-- patron with club soda and lime! General rule of thumb-- if you're craving a sweet or fruity drink just muddle fruit (or herbs! Basil...mint...) into club soda. It's not **the same** as juice or soda, but it's a fraction of the calories! Truth be…
  • Dang. I'm gonna start buying me some skinny girl bare naked vodka!! PS- Who knew Becks Light was actually so light? Thanks for the info... great website!
