I agree with this. If .5 pound a week loss freaks you out, go to 1 pound a week for a while. This will also help you transition into maintenance as you reach your goal

Aspartame has been on the market for about 35 years (maybe more, but I remember first seeing Equal as the hot new 0 calorie sweetener about that long ago). Science has been studying for longer than that. If there were a clear link, especially a causality, between aspartame and weight gain, cancer, or any other doomsayer's…

That's not what red shirts do. Go back and re-watch your Star Trek. ETA oops, late to that party. :confounded:

I think we're mostly on the same page here. My point, originally, was that we can't say something is bad simply because it is processed, or ultra processed. If someone wants to convince me that I shouldn't eat something, it certainly needs to be more than "oh noez, the processed"
-
Off topic, but I see this and think sodium silicide. Which isn't even right because sodium is Na.

Maybe because MFP users, for the most part, log what they eat and calorie control rather than go by "feeling hungry." (And/or are aware of true hunger vs appetite?)
-
I wasn't referring just to her post; there are many on the forums that call processed foods bad just because they are processed. But even for "ultra processed," I think one must look at what about it is making it "bad." For example, someone mentioned instant noodles and that they may break down differently than regular…

I just don't understand this mindset that processing is inherently bad, that something otherwise ok (or good) becomes bad simply because of processing. I get that some types of processing can be less idea than others. But saying it's bad simply because it is processed doesn't make sense.

I have reactive hypoglycemia. The liquid sugar causes too extreme of an insulin response, leaving me with low blood sugar. One of my best friends has T2 diabetes. For either of us, the "real thing" would be very bad, and especially for her, the "end of the world" (or of her)

About 10 years ago I was at about the worst in my MDD. Being able to cook up a box of Hamburger Helper and some frozen veggies for my three young kids was, many days, a major accomplishment. If I'd had to make noodles and sauce from scratch, it never would have happened. It's not my favorite meals, but convenience foods…

But one is supported by repeated scientific study. The other is not. Guess which one is which.

I'm sure this has been addressed (I haven't caught up to all the new pages this morning), but in regards to the bolded - no, that is not what those who "preach" CICO claim or imply. That is the strawman that is constantly set up by the anti-CICO crowd. Are the calories the same in regards to energy, and to weight…

Some people can sustain keto or paleo or something else; if so, good for them. I can't. (So I mostly agree) Agree on the fast food and soda. As far as the body is concerned, carbs are carbs (talking about the macromolecule here, maybe you mean something different). They are broken down into glucose. Some foods high in…

Well said. I agree.

I'd go with low 20s, too. It's not always accurate, but for women definition in the abs tends to start showing up in the low 20s, and yours is just beginning to peek out

This is essentially my argument, as well. Overeating, especially when one is uncomfortable because of it (I mean, physically here, but I guess emotionally could fit as well) is no less wasting food than throwing it out is. "better it go to waste than to my waist"
-
I find the bolded part a bit perplexing whenever I see that claim of "I did it when I was fat so it shouldn't count." There are plenty of people who did some sort of regular exercise, whether it was walking, running, lifting, or some other fitness program, before they started losing weight. I even know some overweight…

I thought buckwheat had gluten. But I may be wrong.

Chances are that, as a 200 pound male, 1500 calories is an aggressive deficit. So, eating 3000 calories in one day isn't going to put you over your weekly calorie goal to lose weight. It may even be that 1500 calories is too low (more info would help - height, age, activity level, goal) for long term sustainability and…

Whichever will interfere less with your workout. Although, TBH, I find it more comfortable to work out in a more form-fitting top that is made from moisture-wicking fabric.

The World Health Organization actually recommends breastfeeding until 24 months. Formula companies are now marketing "toddler formula," so I'm betting there's still plenty of nutrients children don't get (after 12 months) from cow's milk and toddler fare. Many moms around the world continue to breastfeed their children…

She didn't. I brought it up as a possible explanation to some of the weight gain. Especially with PCOS and other hormonal issues, it may be something to ask her physician about if it hasn't been addressed already. Water weight is one way to gain more weight without eating all the excess calories (because it's water, not…

I don't recall how much of it was her PCOS, and how much was other medical issues she had, but my SIL was put on a diuretic by her doctor and lost 40-50 pounds of water weight. Looking at her, I couldn't tell the difference between her fat and her edema (she had plenty of fat and water). @Lgcoulter33 have you had this…

I don't know how much if affects the calories (or how correctly she is logging), but I do know that PCOS and other IR issues can mess with the CO part of CI/CO. And it's a Catch-22 situation: losing weight is one of the best ways to deal with the medical situation, but the condition makes it a lot harder. If the 1200…

"Thongs" ... I can tell this 'sis from a different era! (He's referring to footwear, not undies or bikini)

^ That. OP, more details, if this is a serious question.

I had to stop running a few years ago because every time I tried, I had flare ups of my ITB. I really hated it happening. Then, after my last pregnancy I started having increased low back/hip pain. After ruling out other issues with X-Ray, the doctor sent me to physical therapy and they determined I had hypermobility of…

Well, darn. I've never had 50 pounds to lose. But on my sixty-and-a-half-inch frame, 20 pounds on me is far more significant than 20 pounds on someone who is 5'8" or 6' tall. So, do I have something meaningful to contribute or not ?(I lost about 15 pounds and maintained for quite a while before gaining; this last gain…

I did include the caveat of being careful in logging calories. Aside from that, I didn't say that the benefits have to do with losing weight. Most benefits of exercise, IMO, are not weight-loss related (although exercising certain helps when losing weight as long as one doesn't overcompensate with extra food). I don't…

I'll toss in my opinions which seem to be unpopular in some venues. You don't need to go all-out for exercise. Moderate exercise and even (*gasp*) gardening or some housework gives you benefits (just be careful if logging them for extra calories to eat!!). Obesity, and weight loss, are multifaceted issues and usually…
