  • Thank you so much for reiterating this! I know it in my head and have experienced this with half marathon training, but hated to slow down so much due to slower marathon pace plus heat/humidity. But with my half I did most of my long runs at 9:45-ish pace and ran right around 9 min/miles for the race itself so it's ok to…
  • Thanks! I appreciate the info and the comment on the heat and humidity, they have been brutal. I am hoping the heat will break in September and I will remember it doesn't always feel this hard haha
  • I would suggest a small snack before and/or after your run. You might have to play around to see what helps you feel full.
  • This has happened to me before. 1) Vaseline or body glide on affected areas 2) make sure you are wearing a high-impact sports bra (I like Moving Comfort for larger-chested ladies), 3) If you are wearing your sports bra several times a week, you should be replacing it annually.
  • This used to happen to me - turns out my running shoes need to be a full size bigger than my regular shoes. Haven't had a problem with this since I bumped up my shoes size a few years ago!
  • Similar stats to the original poster (5'5", HW in the low 150s, CW 140-ish, GW 135). I walk 1-2 miles/day in my commute and at lunch, run 3-4 times/week, do strength training and/or yoga 1-2 times/week :) I started running a few years ago and have now completed several half marathons, signing up for future races keeps me…
  • I've mostly participated in big races and like the crowd support and such that offers. I have run RnR DC half twice and yes it might take you that long to get to the start as they hold each group a bit for crowding purposes. Just give yourself plenty of time at the expo, to get to the start line, etc. (Although sometimes I…
  • I spent two weeks in Europe (Germany, Paris, London) in the fall and maintained weight via lots of walking and portion control. I had pastry every day, ate cheese, drank lots of wine, but ate smaller portions at meals and walked everywhere. The food is amazing - enjoy!
  • Banana, peanut butter or almond butter, and a piece of bread. Over 9 or so miles I usually bring something to have during the run (a gel, fruit chews, or even raisins). I avoid caffeine and dairy pre-race, although some people can tolerate them fine - you can always test out different things for training runs and find what…
  • I'm 27 and want to lose about 10 lbs. I'm usually an "everything in moderation" type person and don't cut out sweets/alcohol/etc. My 2015 Goals 1) Get down to goal weight 2) PR a 5K race TBD 3) Train for and run my first full marathon in fall 2015. 4) Run 1,000 miles in 2015. Anyone who likes to eat and/or is interested in…
  • My occasional glass of wine and treat had turned into a near nightly habit and my weight was creeping up over the last 6 months. I am not drinking in January (except for a ski trip weekend with friends) to sort of break the habit. I have been substituting herbal tea or sparkling water with fruit in its place. I will…
  • I have a few fitness and nutrition goals for 2015 1) Get down to goal weight (I was my lowest post-college weight last spring and then after some health issues and lots of excuses I am now about 10 lbs more. I know the # isn't everything, but I felt a lot better at last spring's weight). 2) Run the NYC half marathon in…
  • I ran 706 miles in 2014 (versus 458 in 2013) and I am aiming for 1,000 miles in 2015. I might not of logged all of my treadmill runs the last two years, but those are close at least. Last year I ran three half marathons and finally hit the sub 2 hour mark. This year I am running another half in March and building a good…
  • Depends on the week... sometimes my rest day is a light yoga day or a cross training day, or sometimes I feel like sleeping in (cough, today) and take a day off. As long as you are listening to your body and feel good you don't have to do nothing on your rest day!
  • I would try at least one training run taking them as often as you do during the race, because one race I did overdo it a bit on the fuels and had tummy trouble. Just test it out! For what it is worth I personally have only done half marathons and only take them one on a 10 mile+ run, usually take two during a race.

  • I just had a similar experience - went from a half marathon of 3 hours to 2:30 to 2:15 and was really hoping to hit a sub-2 hour goal. I think this is the first race I had trained so much for and really wanted a goal, thus the extra nerves. I missed my goal (by two minutes, gah!), but was able to relax and realize there…
  • I'll be 27 this year. I run half marathons, live in a big city, love to go out to eat. I like to eat "healthy" because I feel better eating non-processed foods, but also like my ice cream and booze. Big believer that it is all about balance and creating a sustainable lifestyle - which is also why I don't eat 1200 calories…
  • I have run 5 half marathons, the first few I didn't train much for though. The last one I did I was training consistently with a group and never hit over 25 miles/week - you will do great! Definitely only do a couple of slower/shorter runs the week before the race. Good luck!
  • I've done trips where I have logged and trips where I haven't. When I went to Mexico last summer there was no way I was going to log. But usually I go on smaller long weekend type trips and I do log. I feel best on vacation when I still try to get some workouts in and eat what I want within reason. I don't stress about…
  • And for what it is worth, I have eaten many more "fancy" dinners with coworkers than on my own or with a significant other. Hello expense account....
  • Yep I worked for four years out of college at a job where I traveled extensively. One year I had dinner on Valentine's Day with just my (much older, male) boss and everyone thought we were together. My BF and his wife didn't care. Dinners and even sometimes drinks out are just part of the job when traveling.
  • I tip around 10% on carryout - having worked at a restaurant that does carryout all through college, I can tell you the servers/bartenders DO still work on your food. They are usually the one who take your order either by phone or online and relay it to the kitchen, and they are the ones checking and packaging your order.…
  • I cut the kale into ribbons discarding the stems and cook it with some chili flakes, garlic and a little pepperoni - even my vegetable adverse husband likes it that way! I like to take salads to work and mixed with some cabbage with some dressing massaged in, the salad keeps in the fridge better than less hearty leaves.
  • We kept it right at $10,000. That includes everything, my dress, the photographer, seated dinner and beer/wine for 120 guests, custom invites/programs/etc. and flowers. I think that covers the big expenses - we didn't have a video. If anything if I had to do it over I might keep it even smaller guest-wise. Good luck!

  • I personally don't like wearing a belt/having something around my waist when I run. I avoid this by running with the a combination of the below depending on the day: Running pants, shorts or shirts that have a small zip pocket I can fit a key to carry (the shorts and pants have the pocket at the small of my back, I don't…
  • I started out doing run/walk intervals. Definitely get fitted at a running store for proper shoes, it makes a HUGE difference. When I started running I signed up for a race so I had motivation to keep working towards a goal. I also met up with a friend a couple times a week to run/walk so that I had accountability. Good…
  • I really liked the hal higdon training plans! I have some friends who have really liked training with a 10 & 1 plan (10 min running and 1 min walking). You have plenty of time to train up if you get started soon. Best of luck!
  • I did the Rock N Roll DC half last year and am doing it again this year! I really liked it, get a nice view all through the city with just one major hill, the rest felt very flat. I ran it in 2:13 last year and am hoping to hit around 2 this year. I am also doing the Indy 500 Mini (half) marathon in May. In the fall I will…
  • I grew up in Fort Wayne, IN, and have lived in Chicago, Muncie, Ind., and Indianapolis since graduating college. Moved to DC a year and a half ago but am back in Indiana several times a year to see family and friends :)
  • Nike Training Club has a great app! I just use that and RunKeeper
