how do you insert a picture in a post?
I can't figure it out.

A plurality of scales
I'm interested in language and fascinated by the fact that many, perhaps most, people on this board use scales as a plural noun, when it is obviously a singular object. Note that I'm not criticizing anyone for using the wrong word. I'm not a prescriptivist and don't believe that language that is commonly used by literate…

Google Fit calorie burns
Does anyone have a sense of how accurate the Google Fit calorie burn estimates are? Today it estimated 400 calories for a 35 minute run, which seems a bit low, and 430 calories for 18 holes of golf (walking, carrying ), which seems a bit high, but overall it seems reasonable.

"Absent a Medical Condition"?
I routinely read on these boards that CICO works "absent a medical condition.". Is there such an exception? I'm sure that there are medical conditions that increase appetite or reduce burns, but I don't understand how there can be an exception to CICO.

Exercise clothes
I'm perplexed by the range of prices for exercise clothes. I see Nike and Under Armour shorts for $50 - 70. I understand the difference between cotton and moisture wicking fabrics, but i can buy moisture wicking shorts from recognizable brands for $10 - 15. I can understand charging an extra $5 for snob appeal, but an…

Bloviations on my MFP-versary
I started logging on MFP 365 days and 70+ pounds ago, I thought it was a good time for some (not so deep or original) observations.* MFP is an amazing resource, both as a logging tool and for the discussion boards. I could not have lost my weight without it. * Healthy weight loss is much simpler than I ever thought. For…

An unusually silly question
I just awoke in the middle of the night and had a snack. Would you post it to today or yesterday?

Weight loss and Sleep
I've noticed several posters mentioning lack of sleep as a negative factor in weight loss. Is there a demonstrated linkage? If so, what's the casual mechanism? I'm skeptical, but I'm open to persuasion.

NSV: my first official 5k ... And I nailed it
Thanks to MFP, I started a C25k program. I'd never heard of such a thing before MFP and was doubtful i could learn to run. At first, i couldn't jog 100 yards. Remarkably quickly and to my astonishment, within about 6 weeks i was running 3 miles, albeit at a tortoise like pace. I stuck with it and gradually gained speed and…

The road to 10k
This morning I did my first official 5k. I was sufficiently enthused that I want to do a 10k. I'm not naturally inclined to follow rigid training programs, so I am inclined to do speed intervals about once a week and otherwise just work to graduallyb work on extending my running time/distance. I have a two part question:…

NYT blockbuster on Coca Cola funding of weight loss advocacy group
Terrific story about Coke giving millions to highly reputable scientists to advocate that excess calorie intake is not key to obesity. http://mobile.nytimes.com/blogs/well/2015/08/09/coca-cola-funds-scientists-who-shift-blame-for-obesity-away-from-bad-diets/ Have these scientists simply been corrupted by the money? If not…

Best fast food?
I've been on a Jersey Mike's roast beef and provolone kick lately and think I think that it is the best calorie-sensible fast food. Other nominations?

Are plateaus real?
There are constant threads about plateaus, filled with advice about changing diet, or exercise or otherwise "fooling your body." Obviously there are people who experience prolonged periods of no weight loss, preceded and followed by weight loss, but is it any more complicated than: (1) inaccurate tracking or (2) random…

exercises for the underside of arm?
I'm down 70lbs, exercising hard and generally looking pretty good (grading on a curve, of course). However, I was doing kettlebell swings in front of a mirror and was horrified by what the underside of my upper arm looked like. I have no non-vulgar analogies for the flabby, lumpy, wrinkled abomination I saw. I don't even…

For those who have always been overweight
How have you set your target weight/when did you know it was time to stop losing? I've basically always been obese, with a few interludes of merely overweight I've dropped 65 pounds, from 260 to 195. I'm still overweight by standard BMI and BF% measures, but I question whether I could maintain or would feel healthier at a…

how many calories burned golfing, walking, carrying a bag?
The estimates found googling are all over the place, and seemingly high. I walked 3.5 hours, per Google fit.

Treadmills and Hamstrings
Last fall I started a C25K program and was thrilled by my progress. In November, i started running on a treadmill. I quickly started having hamstring problems which would not heal and which flared up when I used the treadmill at more than a flat walk, but I didn't want to leap to conclusions about cause and effect. Now,…

Taking the calories out of rice?
Add some fat while cooking, then cool and voila, half the calories. "The oil interacts with the starch in rice and changes its architecture," said James. "Chilling the rice then helps foster the conversion of starches. The result is a healthier serving, even when you heat it back up.'"…

BMI and Health
Yesterday I met a renowned cardiac rehabilitation doctor - really a big shot in his field. He told me, in substance, that the best research shows that BMI has an essentially U shaped risk curve, with bad outcomes associated with BMIs below 18 our above 35, and relatively small differences within those boundaries. I'm…

body fat scales and age
My gym has a fancy body fat scale. I realize it's not accurate, but it's the best I have to track trends. When I use it, it asks me to input my age. Presumably it uses it in its algorithm, but how? What does age have to do with measuring body fat %?

Devices not in sync
Suddenly my phone and tablet (both android) aren't in sync. Specifically, there is a piece of salmon that shows up in my phone app, but not my tablet. If I try adding it to my tablet, an extra piece shows up on my phone. What gives? Note: I'm posting here because it won't permit me to posy in the tech support forum.

Childhood food pleasures
As a kid, I frequently ate dinner at a family friend's house. Often it was scrambled eggs with canned corn. This morning, I spied a stray ear off corn in the fridge and made eggs with fresh cut corn for the first time in about 45 years. It was delicious. Do others have long lost food pleasures?

Hallelujah, I'm overweight
After 27 weeks and 62 pounds, I've crossed over from obese to overweight on the BMI scale. My body fat % is still obese, but I'm seeing progress there as well. I'm not much of a self-congratulator, but I'm kind of pleased with myself.

lowering BF% without losing weight?
I read posts of people claiming to substantially lower bf % (e.g., 5%) w/o losing weight. My understanding is that adding muscle is a very slow process, so that it would take a year or more of disciplined training to add enough muscle to materially effect body fat % without weight loss. Is there a mechanism that I don't…

Salmon Recipes for non-fish eater?
My wife is under doctor's orders to start eating fatty fish. She's been a vegetarian for years and never liked fish before that. I've bought some wild caught salmon. Ordinarily, i would just broil or poach it, but I am looking for a recipe that hides the fishiness. Any ideas?
