the parable of the banana
I just used a banana in a smoothie. It was almost black--that's how I like them in a smoothie--and shrunken and weighed much less than it did a week ago when it was bright yellow. But, of course, it's just water loss and the banana has the exact same calories as a week ago. I could weigh it and grossly underestimate the…

realistic body fat % goal?
I'm 58 y/o, lost about 60 lbs and brought my bf % down from about 37% to 30%. Yesterday my trainer suggested a goal of 20%. My gut (no pun intended) reaction is that is unrealistic, but that's just a gut reaction. Anyone have experience or wisdom on whether it is realistic? I intend to lose more weight and keep up the…

Wild vs. Farm Raised fish
My wife recently had a heart attack and has been advised by her cardiologist to eat wild, not farm raised, fatty fish at least twice a week. She is a vegetarian who didn't eat fish, other than canned tuna, even before she became a vegetarian, so this will be a challenge. My question focuses on the advice to eat only wild…

crock pot buying tips
We managed to break our 25 year old crock pot, so it's time for a new one. Does anyone have a favorite model or special features they recommend, our should I just buy something cheap?

50 lbs. Next goal in sight
I finally hit the 50 lb. mark this morning, although the last few pounds put up a good fight. I started labor day weekend. The first 40 lbs. or so we're on a hospital supervised meal replacement plan (not VLCD). I know meal replacement isn't well thought of by many on these boards, but for me it worked as training wheels.…

Are there any decent whole wheat or high fiber pastas?
For heart health reasons, my wife is on the DASH diet, so yesterday I decided to try a high fiber, high protein pasta. It was awful. The taste and texture bore no resemblance to good pasta. Any recommendations for good whole wheat or similar pasta?

low sodium vegetarian cooking
So, my wife just had a serious heart attack and needs to eat a very low sodium diet. To further complicate things, she is a vegetarian and does not have an adventurous palate. Anyone know of sites, blogs or other sources of low sodium vegetarian recipes that don't just taste like food that needs salt?

embarrassing gym etiquette question
I'm a relative newcomer to the gym. Is it really expected that you wipe down your equipment? Personally, it doesn't bother me that I might be sitting on someone else's sweat and it surprises me that ît bothers others. However, I don't want to be an aßß hole, so if it is basic expected etiquette, I will play by the rules.

Ucan Supplement
I'm working with a trainer who's pushing me to drink Ucan before my workouts. I' have no aspirations of becoming a performance athlete, and it's expensive. I also have a strong preference for food over supplements. Does anyone use it and think it makes sense for someone in my position?

NSV - out of the closet
I headed down to the basement this morning and started sorting through old suits that have been down there a decade. I was never a fashion horse, but I was immediately reminded that I used to dress well; lots of Hickey Freeman and Hart Schafner Marx. In recent years, I've bought garbage. I didn't want to spend money on…

coming to terms with a splurge
I've just returned from a holiday party. They were serving Schneider Weisse Aventitus. I consumed about 1500 calories of astonishingly good beer, and about 3000 calories for the day. On the one hand, i think I'll need 3+days to make up for my indulgence. On the other hand, I'm savoring the memory. So should I be kicking…

Software for cardiosport (LIFETIME FITNESS) HRM?
I bought an HRM strap from LTfitness. LT Fitness has software to track heart rate, but it doesn't have a calorie algorithm. Does anyone know of Android software that will give calorie burn info?

Heart rate zone training/"fat burning zone "
I've joined a new gym that advocates doing cardio in the fat burning zone. It makes no sense to me to exercise at such a low intensity. I've done some limited research on my own and it has confirmed my skepticism. However, I'm open to be persuaded, so what is the consensus here? Note-I'm not asking about HIIT vs steady…

recommended gym in Detroit (Birmingham) area
Anyone from around here have thoughts? Criteria are: 1. relatively cheap 2. Training available if wanted, but not constant pressure to purchase a "plan" 3. Neither dungeon like not glitzy spa. The Birmingham YMCA would work, but it's a bit too small and crowded to be ideal.

Stupid Rowing machine question
Based on some discussions on this board, I've started using a rower instead of an exercise bike. I'm not working up a sweat, I'm not winded, in general I don't feel like I'm getting a good workout. On a related point, I don't feel like I have real control over the intensity of the workout. The machine has its rhythm and I…

eating below BMR
I frequently see warnings against eating below BMR. I'm baffled by the logic. My body doesn't have seperate buckets of energy stores for the different conceptual elements of TDEE. A calorie deficit is a calorie deficit. Am I missing something, or is this just some confused folk wisdom?

what do shin splints feel like?
I'm in week 3 of a c25k program. I've never run before. I'm doing better than I could have hoped, but I'm feeling some bruising in one shin. Is not painful, but it is concerning. Is this incipient shin splints, or something benign?

BMI?
At what I consider to be my realistic goal weight, I'm still borderline obese on the BMI scale. No rough in hell could I maintain at a healthy BMI#. I find that discouraging. So does anyone know if there is a scientific basis to BMI? How well does it correlate to life expectancy or any other meaningful health outcome?

heart rate monitor question
I understand that strapless monitors are less accurate. But they are also cheaper and more convenient. So how inaccurate are they? If I want to use a HRM to measure exercise calories and assess whether I'm exercising at a reasonable intensity, how far off will I be?
