Should I be concerned that my leg falls asleep after running?
I'm still a newbie runner, I'm still very slow and working on it. When I run, whether outside or on a treadmill, my leg will fall asleep after I am done and I sit down. So it goes something like, go for run -> sit in car and drive a few blocks -> get out of car and leg buckles. Always my left leg. It always recovers. I…

Does eating extra calories "boost" your metabolism?
I say no, but it sure does seem to be a common belief, both in the forums, and various articles. Some say one cheat meal a week. Some say a day. Some say eating at maintenance or above for a whole WEEK helps metabolism. But as far as my understanding goes, your metabolism is largely just how much you move/expend during a…

I've come to the realization that having my calories too low hurts more than it helps.
After losing 130lbs, I plugged my new stats into the calculator, and for 1.5lbs of fat loss per week MFP told me 1500 cals + exercise cals per day. This isn't a lot of food (I'm 6' and was like 185lbs at the time). It's not a lot of food, but it's sane, and doable. With exercise on most days that would be in the vicinity…

So... why the kitten is there soy in everything?
I'm reminded of the great HFCS wars of the late 90s/early 2000s when everything inexplicably had corn syrup in it. I bought some lipton green tea today. I put a bag in my cup and noticed the label said, "Contains Soy". Why is there soy in my green tea? Why is every company and it's brother using soy lecithin as its…

can you use cream of tartar to help stiffen a whole egg?
I tried googling this, but there doesn't seem to be a clear answer. I know I can just "try it and find out" but I'm not in a kitchen until tomorrow and the question is burning me. So here's the issue I'm running into: Protein (whey/casein/whatever) powder and an egg with baking powder will "fluff up" during cooking, but is…

Sometimes I don't know why I'm pushing so hard. Losing 130+lbs solved nothing.
Surely if I dress nicely, I won't be invisible? Surely if I had a great job, I won't be invisible? Surely if I was financially savvy, I won't be invisible? Surely if I had interesting hobbies, I won't be invisible? Surely if I was statistically in better shape than over 60% of the population, I won't be invisible? --- I…

Is maintenance REALLY harder than losing weight?
Someone said to me that it was almost time for "the hard part" when I told them I was near my goal weight. But is it really harder? I don't plan on changing my exercise routine or foods that I eat, but I am definitely looking forward to eating 500-600 more calories per day!

I'm developing an unhealthy habit where I don't eat all day to save calories for later.
I need to start eating celery and other raw vegetables to hold myself over. I don't know why, but I didn't see how easy the solution was until I started posting this thread. .... So asking, brought me to my own answer! Celery, cucumbers, zucchini, etc, it is! Fiberous, refreshing, and delicious! Just realizing I had a jar…

Performance loss, cutting, and it getting worse before it gets better.
I have lost a "kitten-load" of weight, well over 130lbs at this point. I'm at a healthy weight right now, but my goal is to really shred down as much as I can. I'd like to, if possible, get down to single digit body fat % and maintain it for a couple of months to coerce my skin to tighten naturally as much as possible…

I am going to experiment with making sweet potato "brownies" tonight, looking for culinary feedback
After reading through a few recipes online, this is one that I "invented". Most recipes use dates, but I do not have any dates. Instead I'm going to use egg to try to get a custardy texture. I will gladly post how they come out but before I make these, does anyone have much experience using sweet potato as a base for…

One trick to getting started! (or restarted!)
A lot of threads I've read about people falling off the wagon or trying to get started again, all come down to momentum. Baby steps. Put one foot in front of the other! :#

You know what's not motivational and supportive? Loose skin. Kittens to hell.... /whining
Nothing I can do but keep getting my fit on. No amount of muscle is going to fix this. Deep breath. I'm paying a price for the sloth and gluttony of my life. Poor eating habits as a child turn into poor eating habits as an adult, and by the time you figure it out it's too late. There's no coming back from being fat it…

I did it. First time in my life I'm in the "normal" BMI range!
There's still more work to do, and there will probably always be more work to do, but I hit a big milestone! Granted I'm a healthy BMI literally just by a few ounces, but it only gets better from here! Goal weight before re-assessing is just 10lbs away!

I have been hangry/hungry as kitten lately.
- Drink more water - Eat more greens/fibrous veggies - Avoid artificial sweeteners - Eat smaller more frequent meals All pretty sound advice that has always worked for me. After losing a little less than 130lbs it's not like I don't know what I'm doing. It's not like I don't have self control or will power. But holy heck…

Those who got really lean after losing a lot, how much did your skin tighten over time?
I know it has a lot to do with age and genetics, but I'm curious: Those who lost 80+ lbs and found they had a little bit of loose skin (bottom of stomach, inner thighs, etc), where it was aesthetically unsightly but not medically an issue, how much did the skin tighten and over what length of time? I remember reading one…

The provider of the meal replacement I drink is going out of business.
Deeeep breath. It's not the end of the world. It just means I have to go back to massive food prep and hauling massive amounts of food back and forth. Because of my schedule I'm basically not home monday - friday except to sleep and eat all 3 of my meals at work. I have been drinking, to great success, 100% food's low carb…

A moment of truth. First out of state trip/conference since losing 126+lbs
I'm just going to go ahead and bring the majority of my own food with me so I can continue logging and having control of my calories. I won't be able to go to my nightly martial arts classes so I'm going to supplement with a jump rope and tibatas body weight exercises (plus whatever treadmill / gym i find at the hotel). I…

After 120+lbs, the last 20 might kill me.
Did anyone else find the last leg of the weight loss marathon to feel like an emotional and physical roller coaster? So very close to my goal weight, and I imagine the hormonal shift of having so little bodyfat compared to before is driving me loopy. My focus levels, energy levels, hunger levels, etc, are all over the…

Sometimes I have to throw things away, and ban myself from "trigger foods".
Rant on It is the most ridiculous thing. As long as I'm eating clean I have great will power and feel pretty satisfied. The savory flavor of non starchy veggies and pan fried meats fills me up and keeps me happy. A pound of most of veggies is so low on the calorie scale that I often eat a whole steamer bag with my chunk of…

Thoughts on deducting calories from the next day when going over daily limit?
I think it should technically be okay, i went, unfortunately, 1000 cals over yesterday, so im basically fasting today (only going to eat 500ish cals) because i plan on removing those cals from todays limit. I don't know if it's mentally all that healthy, but I figure it will all balance out. How do you handle it when you…

I made it to "Onederland". 315 to 199 since may. 20-25 to go to goal
I am ridiculously proud of myself this morning. I peaked at 335 a couple of years ago, lost 80, put it mostly back on, started again, and now I'm finally close to my old college weight. I'm developing a little bit of loose skin issues but honestly it is way better looking than fat. Pretty stoked. I'm not there yet. My BMI…

Sharing my thoughts on: Two ingredient pancakes: 1 banana 2 eggs.
If you look around there's all sorts of pancake recipes (another fav of mine is just protein powder and egg). I came across one that was just banana and egg. I really like it, and felt like offering some thoughts on it. First, here's the macros of what I made. The pancakes are two eggs and banana, then I top them with a…
