I swear my body doesn't have the ability to gain muscle
- 3 years ago I was 6'2" 270 pounds. - A year of diet and exercise got me down to 145, but I still had a lot of fat around my stomach. - In an attempt to fix my skinnyfat problem, I bulked from 145 to 175 over 6 months. I lifted 3-5x a week using various machines in the gym. My workouts were about 60 minutes long. I…

Is the maximum of ~30 grams of protein per meal myth busted?
The growing tend of the last few years seems to be that consuming much more than 30g of protein per meal will result in unused protein. However, there have been studies that show eating 30g of protein 6 times and day versus 60g of protein 3 times a day resulted in no overall difference in muscle gains. I still see people…

I need to eat 370g of protein today? Huh...
I did a lot of cardio today, burning 2600 calories according to my Garmin forerunner. My protein goal skyrocketed from 167g to 370g as a result. This seems really excessive. Do I really need to consume more protein if I do cardio? I was under the impression you need about 1g/lb regardless of activity level when bulking.…

The calories calculated from my Garmin watch seem high?
Prior to my watch, I was using Strava to estimate my calories burned. Now that I have a Forerunner 945, I am being told to eat quite a bit more with the same amount of exercise. I did a 2 mile run. 26m. 135 AVG, 156 MAX heart rate. It sent 5494 steps @ 148 calories, and the run itself at 274 calories. 422 calories burned.…

First bulk after losing 100 pounds, should I be eating more?
I lost 100 pounds over the last year (6'2" male, 252 to 152), and during the fall/winter I decided to switch into building muscle. My goal was to hit about 180 (+28 pounds) over 6-7 months then cut back down in the spring/summer. Currently, I am lifting 3x a week and also running 2 miles 3x a week, but I log it and eat…

Eating ~2,350 calories a day, BMI of only 20, and still losing 2lb/week (Is this healthy?)
I have lost 98 pounds over the last year. I have a BMI of only 20.0 now but my bodyfat is still 16-17% (male) due to low muscle mass. Many bodybuilders say you want to get down to lower bodyfat % before bulking (9%-12%), and I plan on bulking this winter after it gets cold outside. Right now I still have a small gut and I…

I bought a bike and it was the best thing I ever did
I had no interest in biking and thought I'd have to force myself to do it, but after being out in the sun and blazing through the trails I have become addicted to it. Every day I am excited to get back out there. I have gone from 10 miles a day to 40 miles a day in about a month (5-7 days/week), and I am now working on…

Believe Strava or MapMyRide for exercise calories?
I've been biking a lot (over 300 miles last week). On my longest run, I went 80.3 miles with an average speed of 12.4 MPH (6hr 27 minutes active time). For reference, I weigh 157 pounds and my bike weighs 25 pounds. Mostly flat ground, ~750ft elevation. Strava tells me I burnt 2372 calories during that ride. MapMyRide…

Nevermind. The app was delayed and it took ~30 minutes to show up.

Biking for 1.5 hours @ ~13MPH really burns 800 calories?
I know you really need a heart rate monitor to know for sure, but that seems like a lot of calories burnt. I use an app to track my distance and speed, and I don't feel like I burn 800 calories by the end of my daily bike loop. I feel much more worn out after 30 minutes of cardio and the machine usually says 330 calories.…

When to stop cutting and start bulking?
I'm down 98 pounds in the last year and my BMI is now 21. My waistline is 31.5" around the belly button, but the lowest part of my gut it is 33.5" because my skin is a bit saggy now. This seems to puts me at about 13-18% body fat as a male. My stomach is not flat by any means, I can still grab some mass there and I do not…

So much hate for ellipticals and cardio lately?
While trying to lose my last little bit of gut/chest fat, I did a bit of searching and keep finding comments and videos where people are claiming ellipticals and cardio are BAD for you. They claim they support muscle loss, kill sex drive, cause knee problems, and don't burn that many calories for how much time you put into…

Loose skin, immediately after weight loss versus 2+ years later?
I've recently lost 90 pounds and i've been maintaining for about a month. While I don't have any dangling skin or major problems when standing upright, my skin is still far from tight. While doing push ups, my stomach hangs. While laying on my side, my skin tends to go to one side of my body which looks weird. I am slim…

What should I be doing at this point?
I'm a 6'1' male and went from 252 pounds to 162 pounds (90 pounds loss). I had nearly no muscle mass going into this, which I knew was going to be a problem. My measurement around my gut is only 34" now, but I still can easily grab 2 handfuls (and then some) of fat there. I still have man boobs (lol), but they finally…

I am tired of family members telling me to stop losing weight
I am a bit frustrated right now, so apologies for the mini-rant. It's gotten to the point where I don't even want to see certain family members anymore. "You need to stop losing weight". "We're going to get you help if you don't stop dieting". It's always the first thing out of certain family member's mouth, and always…

My biggest "whoosh" yet on this -70 pound journey
I've been weighing myself every morning while on this journey. I only have 11 more pounds to my goal, so a whoosh this big came as a huge surprise to me. I've been feeling really squishy and figured something was up. Only 1 more pound until I am considered "normal" on BMI now! I didn't realize how non-linear weight loss is…

Today someone told me "I need to stop losing weight"
I've lost 50 pounds and currently weigh 202 pounds as a 6'1" male. I saw my grandma today and she said I am way too skinny, so I told her "I still need to lose about 20 to 30 pounds to be healthy". Well, she freaked out and said I would be "skin and bones" and very unhealthy if I lost any more. My entire family is morbidly…

Finally noticing my weight loss!
I was getting fed up because despite being over half way there, I didn't notice a difference in the mirror (even though the measuring tape told me otherwise). So far, I've lost 44 pounds in 102 days via 1500 calorie diet plus 30-60 minutes of exercise/lifting 6 times a week. I have about 25 more pounds to go and I am…

Can someone explain men's jean sizes to me?
My tape measure shows my waist (at belly button) is 40" and my hip measurement is 40.5". I am definitely not small. Clicking the size charts on jean websites shows if you have a 40" waist you should be wearing 40" jeans (In my case, 40x32). However, I wear 32x32 jeans and actually think I should be in 30x32 jeans because…

I've lost 40 pounds with 32 to go, but I think I need to adjust my goal
6'1" male, went from 252 to 212 with a goal of 180. Lost multiple inches everywhere, but my gut is still big at 41" and I still have a lot of fat everywhere. My weight loss has been a mixture of diet, exercising, and lifting. Online body fat % tests put me at about 30% prior to my weight loss, and they still put me at 30%.…

I am no longer obese
Started at 252 with a BMI 33.2 (Obese), and I am down 28 pounds making me 224 with a BMI of 29.6 (Overweight). It feels really good, though I still don't notice much difference in the mirror and I still haven't gotten any "have you lost weight?" comments. I got another 44 pounds to go to reach my first goal of 180 and I am…

When did you notice the inches coming off the most?
Today marks my 30th pound loss, and I moved out of the obese BMI category. I've lost 2.5 inches on my thighs, 3.5 inches around my chest, and 3 inches on my gut. I got all new clothes but I still don't notice any changes in appearance, and have yet to receive any comments. I think this may be due to my tall height of 6'1'.…

Clothing Woes.... (Losing weight can be expensive)
A month into my new diet/exercise routine, I was still wearing my 38" pants and they became slightly loose. I decided to buy a bunch of 35" pants for encouragement and they actually fit me despite being slightly tight, so I put all my 38" pants into storage. Now another month later, I'm already needing to use a belt with…

Do you need a "leg day" if you do high resistance elliptical?
I lift 2-3 times a week but I've been skipping "leg day" because I always do 30 minutes of high resistance running on an elliptical instead (almost daily). I don't use my arms much on it, so my legs get a really good burn/workout. Will this result in "skinny legs" but big upper body in the long run? My goal isn't to be…

Slow down or keep at same pace?
Since I joined MFP 40 days ago i've gone from 252 to 233.8 with a goal of 180. I'm nearing 20 pounds loss at about 3.15 pounds a week average. No loose or sagging skin yet, everything actually feels more firm. I'm 6'1" so I am still considered "Obese", but only barely. I don't log calories anymore because I am not…

Success stories - Man Boobs Edition?
This is a pretty embarrassing topic. I'd say the biggest reason I hate being fat is having man boobs. I once got down to 188 (I'm 6'2", so that's considered normal BMI) and it didn't make a dent in them. Infact, it made them stick out more because everything else was slimmer. Regretfully, I gave up and ended back up at 256…

What prompted your motivation to change?
I was: - 6'1" 256 pound male (about 30 pounds into Obese BMI). - Badly balding and trying to hide it. - Very bad vision (thick glasses even with good lenses). - 12 hours a day of sitting, and always eating snack food. - Always felt exhausted, slept around 12 hours a day. - Never held a job due to being depressed. - Hated…

Is it normal for tape measurements to go up and down during weight loss?
On top of my diet, I am doing a mixture of interval/cardio 5-6 days a week, and lifting 3-4 days a week. I have lost 10 pounds in 4 weeks (253 to 243). My stomach and chest have lost 3 inches each (I store most my fat here). My legs have stayed the same, and my waist and arms have gone UP one inch. The arms kinda make…
