Running speed help needed
I've been jogging for about 4 months now, having walked daily for 18 months. I am going about 3 or 4 times a week, with a one-hour bootcamp twice a week, occasionally swimming or cycling instead of a run and a few squash games thrown in. I had a target in mind, to run 10k by the end of term. I've managed that, in fact done…

Number of steps after running
I've recently bought a Suunto ambit 3 and have been enjoying looking at all the data it gives me. One interesting observation I've made is that on days when I run, (always after work) I do approx 1500 fewer steps after the run than I do over the same period on gym or rest days. Nothing I'm bothered about, but obviously I…

Favourite food you've discovered recently
I've re-discovered how much I love soup with pearl barley and lentils. It's winter here and I'm cooking up a storm with minestrone, vege soup and pumpkin soup for lunches this week. Lentils and pearl barley add that fibre and protein that makes it a meal.

Overcoming exercise obstacles
I have arthritis in my knee and other issues which mean I can't swim so I was pretty limited to walking for any cardio exercise. It took me a long time to get to a place where I was ready to walk in public, and when I did I had a couple of issues I needed to solve. The worst was the "chub rub"...under breasts and thigh…

Food! Dhosa/dosa and idli
After visiting India last year and falling in love with dosa and idli I made the batter yesterday, fermented it overnight and today made my first ever dosa and idli. For those who are interested, the dosa is a pancake and the idli are small, wee fluffy savoury "cakes" that you have with a sambar. They use the same batter…

Slendier brand konjac noodles
Our local supermarket sells these in a range of guises. Today I bought the pad thai type ones to try out with a vegetarian pad Thai for me and a chicken pad thai for the others. I was really impressed with them. They had the texture of "real" noodles, 10 calories per 100g and looked just the same as my usual pad thai. I…

Recommendations
Wonder if it's ok to start a thread about things we've found that have helped us? Having ordered the Beck solution from another person's recommendation, and impatiently awaiting its arrival (I like the idea of cognitive behavioral therapy and want to explore this more) I wanted to share a book I bought at the beginning of…

Questions about planning
Do you plan your meals each day and know exactly what you will eat each meal? Or do you see what you have left at the end of the day and eat dinner according to that and have an extra treat (or not) according to your target? If you plan, do you pre-log or do you just allocate calories and eat that number?

What helps you keep on track? And work out how your mind works?
Had a not-so-great-day today. Was over my calories goal but still under maintenance. I don't cope well with that, and in the past it would have set me off! I also couldn't do my planned walk as events conspired against me, keeping me at work till well after dark. I'm counting it as a victory that I haven't thrown in the…

Migraines and metabolism
I read some research a while ago that migraine attacks slow both your metabolism and digestion during an attack...and it made sense in that once I had a migraine no medication I took would work...if my digestion had slowed down totally then the oral meds would just be sitting there until I threw them up. I wonder how early…

Irony
My son made me a play list for walking. I always just have it on shuffle. Yesterday's was hilarious. Forecast was for thunder, lightning and rain. I headed out in a break with a patch of blue sky to Kenny Rogers "The Gambler". As the skies opened and the rain came down, the music switched to Eurythmics "Here Comes the…

Types of scales
I'm off to buy a new set of scales. I see there are some that measure body composition, fat % etc. Do many of the the mfp community use these features, and are they useful? I've always just had the standard "this is what you weigh" scales but wondered if others found the body composition scales useful/interesting?

Not as sedentary as I thought
Someone on here recommended a Xiaomi mi band 4 fitness tracker so I thought I'd give it a go. Over the past week or so I've been wearing it, I've averaged 14,000 steps a day. 6,000 (give or take a few hundred) are my intentional walk every evening, but the rest are my normal daily activity. Anyone else been pleasantly…

It's a mental battle
What strategies do you all use to just keep going, keep counting day after day? I've lost 22kg over about 6 months. I have a lot more to go. I'm just so mentally tired of counting calories all the time, seeing it come off so slowly, seeing how far I've still got to go. I'm wondering if I should eat at maintenance for a few…

Dizziness while walking
I have a lot of weight to lose. Been doing this for nearly 2 months and am happy with my progress so far. I've done it purely by calorie reduction...no extra exercise. I'm a teacher so on my feet a lot. I get 1470 calories per day (to lose 1kg a week) and I normally eat between 1300 and 1400. In my two months counting I've…
