You are choosing who makes a high school basketball team. You have the choice between the following two players. Which do you choose? 1). Senior - Been on the team since middle school. Works hard, decent player, friends with other team member. Doesn’t play much and is OK sitting on the bench of a 12 man team. 2). Senior -…

Advice for those in their early 40s
Someone asked a great question buried in another thread I thought I would bring out into the open... Anyone in their 50s plus have any advice to those trying to stay very active throughout their 40s? Anything you wish you knew about eating and/or exercise as you get older? What should those in their 40s expect during their…

Work or play
Just curious, do you consider exercise fun and the health benefits are just a bonus OR do you consider exercise work that you must do to get the benefits? If it’s a mix, which way do you lean?

Legal weed
I live in a state In the USA where you can smoke weed. I’ve recently found that if I get high just before I reach a runners high, I get super high. Anyone experiment with this, or similar, combination of natural and chemical endorphins? What works the best? I placed this discussion in the forum before I actually eat the…

Dumbbells, finders, and rings... oh my!
I started using dumbbells for the first time about three months ago. I’ve noticed my wedding ring feels tighter. I’m wondering if my fingers are gaining muscle and getting bigger from the gripping. If this is happening, did anyone else go through this? How did you handle it? Buy a bigger ring every so often? Thanks!

Protein power and milk
Protein power has about 25g of protein per serving. Milk has about 12g per 8 oz. Why should I take protein power instead of 16oz of milk? Assume I love to drink milk.

Workout Too Long
I recently worked with a trainer to develop a 3x week split routine. However, given my work schedule, I’ve found that I can’t make it to the gym as often as I’d like and switched to an overall workout. However, my workout is about 2-3 exercises too long given the time I can spend at the gym. If you had to drop a couple…

Stretching before lifting weights
It stretching before weight lifting a good idea or waste of time?

Developing good posture
Will good posture come with getting stronger? Or is it something you need to concentrate on when standing? I’ve noticed that I can make my posture look better by either sticking out my chest, pulling my shoulders back, or pushing up with my abs. However, when I do all three, I look way too stiff and like I’m trying too…

Forward shoulders on deadlift
Apparently I have forward rolled shoulders when I deadlift. But when I roll them back to correct form to do the exercise, my collar bone feels like it will split in half. My trainer tries to get me to reduce the weight down to have proper form without pain, but the weight is a joke - 95lbs when I can deadlift 300 easy. It…

Advice You Didn’t Ask For - Don’t Forget Your Micronutrients
I’ve been tracking my food, eating at my macros, and ignoring my micros for about a year and a half. I’ve been getting headaches and tingling throughout this time and recently found out my blood platelets were low. A couple of days ago I started looking at the MyFitnessPal reports and noticed my daily iron and potassium…

Recomp/bulk - small surplus
I’ve been researching a recomp/bulk. The idea is to gain total weight while keeping you body fat % the same level. The idea is to eat at a small surplus, maybe around 150cals. This is different than a recomp because you don’t drop bf% and different from a bulk in that bf% remains level. It will not produce as much muscle…

Recomping
I think recomping is to lose body fat and gain muscle with eating at maintenance. Has anyone tried this? What was your experience like vs a bulk/cut strategy? I’m curious how much muscle growth you miss out on vs. a straight bulk. 50% Thanks!

First Bulk
I’m going to start my first bulk to build some muscle but not too much fat. Currently I’m 43, 6’3” 195lb at around 14-15 bf%. I do a push/pull/leg program 3 days a week with some cardio worked in. I know some people think this is less than ideal, but this was given to me by a trainer that and I would not want to change…

Finished c25k
I just finished c25k. It was a great program, but now what? I was thinking to work on improving my 5k time since I am so slow. I run at just under 11 min per mile pace. I was thinking to run a 5k twice a week and hope that my time improves Any thoughts on how a plan like this will play out over a few months? I’m not really…

Why ask why?
I’ve been posting on here for a while and have noticed something that happens in every thread. I will start the thread by asking a simple question like “what is considered an an above average bench press?”. Without fail, the responses will mostly be “it depends on your goals.” No it doesn’t. I have no goals. All I have are…

Sleeping
I’m working on my sleep. I’ve heard to plan for 7.5hrs. After a week, If you wake up 5mins before your alarm, you are good. If not, add 30 minutes to your sleep time and try again. Etc. I’ve also seen where working out requires you to get more sleep. For example, LeBron often sleeps 12hrs to recover. My question is that if…

Resting during a set
If I am on a program that demands 10 reps in a set, can I do 6 reps, rest 30 secs and then do 4 reps? How long can I pause between reps during a set without “failing the set”? My program basically says to increase the weight once I complete 3 sets of 12... I’m guessing there is a cut off for rest between reps. Otherwise I…

Running tips
I’m on a couch to 5k program. I’m currently at 2.5 miles. I’ve always ran as fast as my body would allow and I’ve never trained for running. Recently I’ve been trying to run so my heart rate does not go above a certain level that would cause me to be uncomfortable. Doing this, I’ve found I can run for a long time without…

Max heart hate
I can easily go over max calculated max heart rate. Max calculate max is 177, but I’m often maxing out around 185 when I run. What does this mean? Should I calculate my heart rate zones using 177 or 185?

Strength Calculator
When this calculator says I am stronger than 60% of lifters in my demographic, are they talking about active lifters or all people that have the ability to lift weights?
