Sore muscles and weight gain
I have read somewhere that muscle soreness can be accopanied by weight gain as the muscles retain water. Is this correct and if so is there a set amount of weight that can be attributed to this, or a certain intensity of workout that would result in this. I started back doing the 30DS yesterday and today have sore arms,…

Weight static, waist smaller?
Question - if your weight hasn't changed but your waist measurement has dropped does that definitely mean you have lost body fat?? Assuming you have not just given birth lol.

Fat loss vs muscle loss
Hi I have read tonnes about the starvation mode myth etc and wondered this: Is there a set (or approximate) body fat percentage below which a significant calorie deficit will result in muscle loss/slowed metabolism and preservation of fat stores?? Does this occur when a person hits essential body fat % - I am assuming that…

Swimming stroke technique
I last swam competitively 25 years ago and have recently joined masters. Tonight the coach said I need to change my stroke to a straighter arm which I assume is the deep catch technique I have read about on google. It feels very odd, and goes against all I was taught back in the day! I am also concerned about the added…

Losing fat vs losing muscle
Hi I have read tonnes about the infamous starvation mode etc and wondered this: Is there a set (or approximate) body fat percentage below which a significant calorie deficit will result in muscle loss/slowed metabolism and preservation of fat stores?? Pull buoys - yes or no?
I have read mixed opinions on the use of these. I used to use them when I was a competitive swimmer (25 years ago lol) I am trying to get back into swimming for a half ironman swim in 3 months time (eeek) and yesterday used one for about 500m of a 2.5km session. Today my shoulders are pleasantly sore - not injury sore,…

Question for experienced indoor rowers
I am just starting out with the indoor rowing at the gym, as I find the other cardio machines a bit monotonous and want a challenge. My question is, once good form is established, should a beginner be looking mostly at stroke rate, distance or watts as the benchmark for improvement?? I did 10 minutes the other day and…

Rowing machines!
I generally avoid them as find them challenging lol. But I am wondering.... 1) Why do they seem to be the least used cardio equipment in the gym - is everyone like me? 2) Are they as great a workout as they seem? 3) Do they really only burn as little as MFP says - I went on one ystd for ten minutes and the screen said 105…

Noooooooooooooo
every time I get back into exercise I GAIN weight. And it's happened again. Been back into it for about 3 weeks and my weight has gone UP by 2 kg. And I am eating at a modest deficit so its not muscle mass. Makes me want to chuck it in and go back to being a couch potato :-(

Brazil Butt Lift
I have read that most people log the Bum Bum workout as low impact aerobics. But that only gives me 108 calories for the 25 minutes and I was soaked and was shocked it came out so low. Has anyone done it with a HRM to see how it compares to the MFP stats for low impact aerobics??

Planks
1. Is it true they are considered the best ab exercise? 2. Should you do them every day or have a rest day in between IF that is the only ab exercise you do?

Spot GAINING
I know spot reduction is impossible but is it possible to add size to a particular muscle group?? I am wanting to gain some mass in my shoulders but not elsewhere - am guessing I need to eat at a surplus but at an already average bodyfat % I am nervous of gaining fat as well. Do you have any tips/wisdom around training and…

Possibly the world's dumbest question
Do all protein powders contain BCAAs? And if not is there any point taking one WITHOUT BCAAs??

Adding muscle vs adding fat
I have read that it is virtually impossible to add muscle (size not strength) unless you are eating at a surplus. However I am guessing a surplus means adding some fat too (not keen!) Does the TYPE of food eg protein vs carbs/fat determine how much of the surplus goes to building muscle as opposed to adding fat? Are there…

New to open water swimming
Hi everyone. I have (probably foolishly) agreed to do the swim leg for a team in a half ironman in early January. I am a former competitive swimmer and could likely swim 3-4km any day in a pool, but have never done open water swimming. Does anyone have good tips on a 3 month panic training regime?? The swim is 2km and it…

Why would a man do this???
I had a relationship with someone that ended about seven months ago, and since then was going out with someone else until a few weeks ago (the first was over before the second started!) We ended on ok terms but I would have put a million bucks on not hearing from him again. Then the other night I get a text out of the blue…

Alternative terrains
I usually run on soft grass at my kids' school but wondered what else is doable in really atrocious weather. I had thought a treadmill barefoot would be too jarring on joints, and am guessing running on spot is not really where its at, so wondered what others do when the weather isnt cooperating! I do run in light rain,…

Respecting men
I read some research yesterday that said if they had to choose, over 75% of men would rather be respected than loved. Without debating whether or not this is true, I am curious as to HOW men feel respected by their partners ie what can women do to show respect/admiration etc for the man in their life??

How long does it take
For weight to be gained or lost? As in, if you eat healthily and below maintenance now, how long to see weight shift. Conversely, how long does it take for bad habits to catch up with you? Is our current weight reflectived of our recent eating habits, or does it take longer - is what we are now the outcome of a month or…

Questions about the thermic effects of food
Firstly, is the estimated thermic effect of food a stable measure ie does it vary from person to person or is it always the same eg is the TEF for protein always around 25% for everyone? Secondly, How much if at all do we need to factor this into our diet, particularly if we eat higher levels of protein?

Different goals for upper/lower body
This might well be a common issue, but I have different goals for my upper and lower body. I tend to gain strength far more quicklyy in my legs, whereas my upper body (even when I was a nationally ranked swimmer) is much sloooooooower at building strength and muscle. Hence I want to work on building muscle especially in my…

Question for the men in relationships
For those of you in happy relationships and who would never contemplate cheating, would you consider watching porn to be a sign you are not satisfied with your partner? (Yes I know women watch it too but this is a question to the males out there)
