What happened to my legs!!!!
This week I have done 3 lots of circuit training, largely squats and sumo squats plus kettlebell swings, two long walks and a short run. Today my jeans feel TIGHTER in the upper legs - needless to say this is not the effect I am looking for. Any idea why my legs are seemingly BIGGER?? I have not used very heavy weights…

Working out with sore muscles???
Two days ago I did a kettlebell workout and was happily sore the next day. I am wanting to do it 3x a week but am still a bit sore today. Is it ok to work out with sore muscles? I am not crippled or anything but certainly still sore! In a nutshell it's sort of a circuit training workout, with one armed shoulder presses,…

Humour me for a moment
If it is true that when consuming protein, the thermic effect is up to 30%, does this mean that hypothetically if someone ate all protein and was aiming for 1500 calories a day (this is definitely not me!) they would need to consume just over 2000 actual calories worth of protein to offset the thermic effect??

Protein without the sodium
Does anyone know of good high protein foods that don't have a high sodium content? I usually get my protein from meat and eggs, don't eat dairy and wonder what other sources are out there that are also low carb and low fat?

Adjustable kettlebells??
Are these safe or is it better to get the individual ones. Have seen this in NZ wondered if it is a good idea or not http://www.elitefitness.co.nz/NordicTrack-Powerbell-Adjustable-Kettlebell/P1038/2668

Question for the adult men!
How soon is too soon in a relationship (talking people in their 30s and 40s) to tell the person you love them?? I am talking about in a committed monogamous relationship.

When you have fallen off the wagon.....
.... how long does/did it take to lose fitness and gain weight back?? I haven't exercised for about 7 weeks now and haven't been logging. Although my total calories are possibly not horrendously over what they were, I know I am eating less protein and more sugar than I had been. Yesterday I braved trying on my most…

Experts can you advise??
How long does it take for the arch, foot, ankle etc to stengthen/adapt to barefoot running?? I made the switch to try to overcome knee problems and have been doign C25K barefoot. Did week 2 day 1 yesterday which is 20 minutes of 60 seconds running 90 seconds walking. Felt great during and after, but have a mild niggle in…

Cardio after weights to burn fat.
Have read that cardio after weights is the recommended way to go. I can understand the logic in that cardio first would decrease lifting ability. But to say weights first means you then burn fat in the cardio, wouldn't you have to have fully depleted glycogen in the weights for that to happen? Or what is the science behind…

Favourite BSN lean dessert flavour?
So far I have found this to be the best tasting protein - have tried the whipped vanilla cream, and the chocolate fudge. Didn't like the chocolate as much on its own, but was nice in oatmeal and yoghurt. What are the other flavours like??

Low sugar dairy products
I am wanting to increase my calcium for many reasons, and want this to come largely from dairy products. I have low bone density and have also read research that calcium from dairy specifically helps with fat loss. I have never been much of a milk drinker even as a baby, so am trying to increase that and also have things…

Men - how important are looks?
My partner often says "beauty is only skin deep" and while I hope to God that is true, I really don't believe it. How important are looks to men (adult men, not boys)? He knows a lot of REALLY gorgeous women, so I am almost permanently in paranoid panic mode! (He has no idea about this or how insecure I feel about the…

Stretches for flexible people???
I have just been for a run and was googling shin stretches as I am prone to "shin splints." Which led me to wonder, if you are quite flexible (as I am) are the stretches as effective? For example one has you sit on your feet and lean back, the other is lying on one side and bringing the top foot back towards the butt. I…

Schwinn HR Monitors
Does anyone have a Schwinn GPS trainer/heart rate monitor? I had been looking at Polars but there is a day deal here on the Schwinn. down from $399 to $199. Any feedback??

Formula for depleting glycogen?
I know the liver has a finite storage ability, and guess muscles do also, so wondered if there is a way of working out how much exercise or calories burnt it takes to deplete glycogen stores. And therefore how much you need to consume after any specific workout.

Messages in life that mess up up.
What is the one message from your childhood or later years that messes with your life (including weight issues) the most? Mine is growing up with the strong message that it was just as well I was highly intelligent as I wasn't blessed in the looks department, so for me it's the unattractiveness hangup that gets me most of…

I may have solved my knee pain
So I am on attempt 4 of C25K and this time I am doing it barefoot.. The first few weeks were are bit touchy with new aches in ligaments etc that haven't been used from years of shoes. But I did 13 minutes of running (in blocks) tonight and NO KNEE PAIN. I think the barefoot option has saved me!

Resting pulse
What is normal for adult females? I have been on beta blockers for 2.5 years (stopped them under doctor's instructions 6 days ago) and mine is now around 65-70. A few weeks ago mine was at a low of 38 (hence told to stop) but normally while on meds it was around 52, so 70 seems really high to me, so am wanting a reality…

Relationships and weight.
Does anyone here see a connection between being happy or unhappy in a relationship and their weight? I was at my lowest weight when my marriage was crap, and now that I have met mr wonderful I am mindful of not becoming a happy fatty!

Can scales UNDER weigh
I have my scales at home which are very good ie multiple weighs don't vary. I have hovered around the 52kg mark for ages, then hit 51.5 a few weeks ago then back up to 52kg yesterday (I usually only weigh once a month). Had a day of very healthy eating, no exercise yesterday and today I am back down to 51.0. My question…

What is so special about running???
This is semi -rhetorical. I have recently taken up running and after struggling through multiple injuries and problems for the past four months, today managed to run a total of 60 minutes (spread over a few sessions). I know many people are passionate about running, and I took it up as I wanted a free, readily available…

Strength, endurance, mass - what if I want them all??
I know that these three goals require different approaches ie different weights and rep ranges, but what if your goals are a combination of these. I am wanting to build size in my shoulders as well as functional strength, and essentially the elusive "definition" which i know is a lot dependent on reducing bodyfat. How do…

A question for the men
For men (ie adults!) how forward do you like a woman to be?? I am asking because the man I have just started seeing is incredibly shy and reticent, so much so that I had to ask him out after weeks of trying to decipher ambiguous comments and actions. Since then, (a week ago) we have been out three times, but I know (by his…

Quitting food logging???
I am thinking of stopping logging my food and wondered who else had done this successfully. I pretty much eat similar foods most days and have a fair idea of the calories etc. I am guessing most people don't want to log forever, so am interested in how people have found it when they stopped ie did they gain weight or stay…

Turning chocolate into muscle???
It's funny the things that come to mind at 3am when you can't sleep. Anyway, the guts of this question is "is a surplus a surplus?" I know deficits = weight loss and surpluses = weight gain. However I guess I have a perception that if the surplus is made up of less healthy foods the gain will be mostly fat, and if it is…

What is fast and what is moderate??
Hi everyone am happy to find this group. I used to be a competitive swimmer (in my long ago youth!) and have recently got back into it. I usually swim between 2 and 2.5km each session, and a mix of freestyle, backstroke and breastroke (with maybe two laps of butterfly) Today I did 2km (1.25miles) in 36 minutes and wondered…

Alternatives to running when the weather stinks!
I am a barefoot runner and while I run in light rain, we are set for a week of the heavy stuff and I am FRUSTRATED! Treadmill isn't an option due to the impact on barefoot (correct me if that's wrong) and I am guessing running on the spot inside won't cut it either. I want something as close to running as possible as I am…

Share your story
I started running in September 2011 and very soon developed knee pain which later turned out to be largely due to my (expensive and recommended!) shoes. In December 2011 I decided to try barefoot running, and all had been going great, until a few days after a 25 minute run my daughter gave me a foot rub and I nearly hit…
