Jog/walk intervals
I've walked three marathons in the past year, and I'm looking to increase my pace by incorporating some jogging into the mix. I'm fairly new to jogging, but I've completed C25K and can jog for 40-minute intervals at a stretch. I've been doing interval training on my long training workouts, starting with a 1:2 ratio (1 min…

My new scale hates me...
More accurately, my old scale was lying to me, and my new scale refused to play along. A couple weeks ago, I thought I'd hit a major milestone. According to my scale, I was down 55 pounds, which was the halfway point of my weight loss journey. I was maybe a week or two away from hitting the 200-pound mark for the first…

Six months in - 40% there, and lessons learned
It was six months ago today that I joined MFP. So far, I've lost 45 pounds. I know, I know - not that impressive when you consider there have been people here who have lost 60, 80, 100 pounds in the same amount of time. But I've never lost this much at one time before, and it's a major accomplishment for me to have stayed…

Any marathon walkers out there?
I do a lot of walking (7-8 miles a day, on average) as my primary exercise. I've never been a runner, and my knees have told me repeatedly they don't like it when I've tried it, so I'm okay with "just" walking for now. A couple of months ago I decided it would fun to walk a half marathon, and picked one in February as a…

BPM
Lately I've been listening to SiriusXM's Electric Area during my daily walks. The music's decent, but what I really enjoy about the station is that about 90% of what they play clocks in at a very consistent 128bpm, which is a comfortable walking speed for me when I step in time with the music. I'd like to gradually…

A journey of a thousand miles...
...begins with a single step. Yeah, we've all heard that before. You're probably the most vulnerable to failure when you're just starting out. You have this goal that seems so remote that it may as well be a thousand miles away. "It's going to take FOREVER to get there!" That's often enough to keep people from even…

HAVE YOU SEEN ME???
I haven't mentioned MyFitnessPal on my facebook status to date, although I have made some oblique references here and there to hitting certain milestones. This was my post today: I know I'm absent-minded, and I misplace things all the time, but somehow over the past few months I've managed to lose an entire CASE of paper...

Friday 5/25 is TOWEL DAY...
Saying a big hello to all intelligent lifeforms everywhere and to everyone else out there, the secret is to wipe down the damn machines when you're done with them, guys. OK - that's not quite right. But you should still be carrying your towel with you on Friday: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Towel_Day http://towelday.org

Moral Dilemma - Skechers Shape-Ups
According to an AP article yesterday, "Skechers USA Inc. will pay $40 million to settle charges by the Federal Trade Commission that the footwear company made unfounded claims that its Shape-ups shoes would help people lose weight and strengthen their butt, leg and stomach muscles." People who file a claim under the…

(500) Days of ...
OK - file this under weird milestones. Today (May 14th) is the 135th day of 2012. The implications of that are that, if you made a New Year's resolution back in 2011 and have stuck with it through all of last year plus 4 1/2 months of THIS year, then today is Day 500 for you. For me, I gave up going to fast food…

Shut up shut up shut UP!!!
The boss brought in a box of Krispy Kreme donuts this morning. There are still four of them sitting in the break room next to my office, and the custard-filled one is calling my name. LA LA LA LA I CAN'T HEAR YOU... 90 minutes till I go home...

NSV - Keeping The Streak Alive
Baseball season is upon us, and with that comes... winning streaks! I always like to cheer for a player or team that's got a nice hot streak going. What streaks do you have going right now? Have you stayed under your calorie goal for a week straight? Have you made it to the gym for 10 days in a row? I've got a few hot…

Goals vs. DEADLINES
How many of you have set DEADLINES for reaching your goals? Not just a weight loss goal, but a time limit in which to accomplish it? When I started here back in November, I set a goal of getting back to my high school weight by the time I turned 50. Basically, I wanted to drop 110 pounds in ten months. I got off to a quick…

Sedentary? or Not?
When setting up my profile to calculate my daily net calories, we're prompted for our activity level. I have a desk job, which they would indicate (and I would expect) makes me "Sedentary:". However, for exercise I walk 60-90 minutes every day. Should I be bumping my activity level up a notch?
