And the she said ....
So, you all know that last week at Barre Burn I got called old. Or something like that. On Friday - at the same location but different instructor - I think I got called FAT ! Yes, I've put on some weight lately and maybe my gym clothes aren't that flattering, but at pilates - which I'm doing by dr's orders - and no, I'm…

Can she say this?
At Barre Burn yesterday, the teacher announced "I see we have all ages here today". Yes, I'm 51 but I don't think I look "so old" ... I'm not stooped over. Most gym classes are populated by the very young, I'll admit .... But was that nice or even necessary of her to say? She wasn't that young either - she must have been…

Just bought a weight belt !
Due to back problems after falling on the ice last year, I haven't been able to lift as heavy as I'd like to. Chiropractor isn't helping so my next stop is physical therapy. Does anyone use a belt? Any tips/pointers for me? Thanks !

Time to address my Back Issue(s)
I fell on the ice in January and my back got a lot better but not completely better, and lately it's been a little worse. Time for a game plan. I'm seeing a chiropractor tomorrow!

Do you take Vitamin D? Calcium? Other supplements?
So I make myself a honkin' smoothie and cram a lot of nutrients in there but sometimes I can barely get it down, what with all the beet powder and chewy flax. Plus, on the days that I'm up and out super early, I can't choke it down before I have to leave. So I bought some supplements to use on those days. Of course, I…

Holding my own; me vs. The Trust Fund babies
I live in Brooklyn and work in Lower Manhattan and tend to frequent the gyms close by, which are full of young members. I find that when the classes are more of a competition, I fall short which I hate; yes I spent my youth being picked last for teams in gym class and I've had enough of that. Well, well; so I take The…

I feel invisible "at my age"
No one wants to be my partner in gym workouts and certainly the teacher doesn't goo all over me, like he or she does to an obviously younger, good looking young man or lady ... I'm not overweight or an obvious beginner, but still.

Flywheel or Soulcycle ?
I want to take a really good Spinning class. Does anyone have strong opinions about either of these places? Thanks.

So I fell on the ice, what to do for exercise?
Right now I'm besties with my heating pad and Tylenol so I'm not moving very much. Am I only going to be able to do Pilates and Yoga once the pain/bruising is over? For 10 years I've worked out hard, 5 or 6 days a week. I want to Spin and use the rowing machine and jump around; I'm NOT a happy camper!

Considering a powdered calcium supplement
We have osteoporosis in the family plus I'm going to be 50 soon so my dr recommended me taking calcium now, then doubling it when I reach full-on menopause. It's not my first try taking calcium; the chocolate chews are nasty and the pills are enormous. I saw a powdered kind in the Vitamin Shoppe and bought it, then looked…

What is the latest Ipod-type device?
As my kids like to say, I’m always late to the party. I only have a cell phone for under 2 years, and that’s only because my employer blocked all social media on my office computer. I have Pandora on my phone and it’s OK. A friend told me that she buys music from Amazon and plays it on a free app that she downloads but my…

Preparing smoothies ahead of time
I put a lot of stuff in my smoothies so I started preparing the jars ahead of time, then just adding the cold/wet ingredients when I am ready to blend and drink. I put 5 things in there; acai powder, chia seeds, powdered wheat grass, protein powder, hemp seeds. I add yogurt and orange juice in the morning. Does anyone else…

Collage Video going out of business! Oh, no !!!!
I spent many happy years exercising at home, in my pajamas, and they helped me choose videos and exchange them when they weren't quite right. I also got videos for DH and DD and they helped me choose gifts, buy weights, and other speciality items. At some point I gravitated away from vhs tapes and even dvds, and perhaps…

Motivation from "Dance like no one's watching!"
You know this quote? "You've gotta dance like there's nobody watching, Love like you'll never be hurt, Sing like there's nobody listening, And live like it's heaven on earth.” My regular Step class was overcrowded so instead of cramming myself up front, I went over on the side. The lights were off and we did some Soca…

I talk the talk AND Walk the Walk!
I can't tell you how many times I hear someone say "they can't lose weight", then they post an enormous Shabbos menu. Besides challah, I see menus with pasta salads, potato salads, and even rice. How much starch do you need? Drinks. Desserts. Dip, oh my Lord, the dips !!!! Like you have to encourage anyone to oink challah,…

Having a hard time getting sneakers to fit!
In the past 5 years that I have been exercising seriously, I have gone through many pairs of cross trainers. I had a pair of pink and blue Pumas that I loved, than when they needed to be replaced, the next pair of Pumas didn’t fit well and I had foot pain every time I wore them until the padding wore out. Ditto with…

The Tishre Fitness Challenge!
My trainer is starting a 60 day Fitness Challenge next week - it's not just about losing weight, it's about having more stamina and bulding more muscle, etc. The dates run smack into the month of the biggest eating all year. I figure that if I join, it will help me not go hog-wild with the calories. What do you all think?…
