One year + one month later
I was going through my pictures and I came across my starting pictures and I'm amazed at the difference, so I thought I would share!! I started MFP in January 2012 but unfortunately I didn't take any before pictures until February 2012, by that point I had only lost about 2 lbs so they are basically my "before" pics :) I…

Squat "advice"
Does this ever happen to anyone else: Doing my squats, minding my business, not struggling, having a good workout. Then some guy comes over and says something along the lines of "you know you should really be looking up when you do your squats." And then I have to go into my schpeel about how I'm doing Starting Strength…

Oldie but a goodie
Hey everyone! I'm not new to the site, I've been extremely committed to MFP since January, but in the last month or so I’ve been wavering a bit and my results and motivation have been lackluster. That's where you come in! I've had friends come and go on here and I love my current pals, but need to add some more to shake…

Let's have a conversation
About how motherf$%^ing hard overhead presses are!!! So today was my 4th workout (I'm doing SS instead of SL but essentially it's the same thing except 3 sets of working sets instead of 5) and my working sets were supposed to be with 55lbs, but what i ended up doing was: warms ups 5 reps 55 lbs 3 reps 55 lbs 4 reps50 lbs I…

Small hands
Does anyone else have issues with having small hands and not being able to grip bars as tightly? Last night when i was doing DLs (125#) it wasn't so much that the weight was too heavy as much as it felt like I was going to lose my grip and drop the bar. I'm concerened that when I increase it will get even worse. My thumb…

One rep max
What is the most effective way to increase your one rep max? Basically what I do is 3-4 sets, the first set I’ll do 10-12 reps, then increase weight and do 8-10 reps, increase weight do 5-6 reps, increase weight (which ends up being my max) and doing 1-3 reps. I’m just wondering if by doing this I’m burning out my muscles…

I don't train, I just run
Last Friday I hit a milestone, rather a 9-milerstone :) I'm not training for an event, and really have no desire to run races, I run simply because after years of hating it, I'm actually kinda falling in love with it. I've started asking myself, how far is far enough? For the past few months I've been tacking on a half…

Crazy chip aisle
Was just at the grocery store and in the healthy chip aisle there were lots of interesting items. I was THIS close to buying Plentils, chips made out of lentils, but the little bag was $3.79 so I thought I'd ask if anyone has ever tried them and what they think. There were also hummus chips, chips made out of hummus, I…

Moms ... Gotta love em
In celebration of Mother's Day in a couple weeks, I thought it would be fun to start a thread of funny, crazy, ridiculous emails/texts/IMs from our mom's. I'm obsessed with the website Postcards From Yo Momma, so this can be an MFP version  I'll go first Background: I was dating this guy and I cooked dinner for him,…

People who complain they're fat but do nothing about it
In the gym locker room the other day this girl was complaining that the scale “loves to hate” her (she’s only lost 4 lbs since January). Being the helpful person I am I asked her if she was watching her calories, she said no. I told her I’ve lost almost 15 lbs in since Jan. by exercising AND counting cals and that it was…

what to eat after a run
I've just started long distance running this year,( I'm at 8.5 miles) and I generally run around 5 p.m. I find that after a run the thought of food makes me want to vomit, but when I'm finished with my run its dinner time and I know I have to eat something to repair muscles etc. What does everyone eat after their runs and…

Runners: Stress fracture vs. Shin splints
Hey all, I've been having pain in my inner lower legs (both legs), almost feels like a bruise, haven't noticed any swelling. It does vary from dull in one leg to sometimes sharp in the other. I've had it since about January when I started increasing my running/working out etc. I've had shin splints in the past and this…

Supersets V. Circuit Training
I tend to superset; generally I do a total of 6 exercises, alternating between a lower and upper muscle group (sometimes opposing muscle groups) within the set, I take about 2-3 min break in between supersets (usually to get next machine/equipment ready) and I run after weight training. What exactly is the proper way to…

Vegan binding sub
My sister tried using flax seed powder instead of egg as a binder when she made breaded eggplant, she said it didn't work out so well. Does anyone have advice on the best way to use this technique or another ingredient to use in place of the egg? Thanks!!

Undressing Rooms
Below is an article I thought i'd share about locker rooms. I'm perfectly comfortable being naked so i can't necessarily relate, but I still found it interesting. Enjoy! Happy Friday!!! (Edmonton) Sweating in the gym, surrounded by others, pounding to the beat in group exercise class has become the norm for many women. But…

If you’re not doing these you should :)
I just want to share my single favorite leg exercise: Rear elevated split squat or Bulgarian squat. OMG these are killer but I love them. I’m always sore the next day after doing these (I’m actually sore right now) and I do them on a weekly basis. I’ll add more reps or add some weights to keep it challenging. If you don’t…

What's your goal hole
I have a belt, when I purchased it I had to punch an extra hole in it cause it was too big. Since I've gained weight I can no longer use that hole; I now refer to it as my "goal hole" hehe (it also sounds kinda dirty under the right circumstances, lol) I'm about half wayt to being able to use that hole and I'm very…

Question for long distance runners
I've been working on my distance running, I'm only at 6 miles but I would ultimately like to make it to a half marathon. At what point do supplements (gels, drinks, blocks, bars, etc.) need to be taken? I'm sure everyone is a little different but would like to see at what mile runners supplement and with what. I think I'm…

Universal smart phone armband
Does this exist??? I haven't found anything to hold my phone while I work out, (music is on phone), and it's a pain in the *kitten*!! Only a few of my work out clothes have pockets and I hate having to take my head phones out when I lift. I don't want to have to by a new armband every time I get a new phone. Does anyone…
