Why do so many men keep their chicken legs?
So, the women have put one back on us in the "Why do so many women lift such light weights?" thread. Just as often as I see women lifting light weights in the gym, I see guys pumping out set after set of chest back and arm exercises, and the only leg workout they do is the pacing they do between sets. Your upper body looks…

My Bed Hurts
So, over the last 3 months or so, I've been sleeping mostly on a pallet on the floor of my bedroom. No, no.. I'm not in trouble. My wife is breastfeeding our newborn (well, 3 month old), and with our smallish bed (full size), coupled with the fact that I don't want to keep them awake throughout the night (I toss and turn a…

Which Gym To Choose??
In a few weeks, I am moving to another city (Sacramento, CA). I currently go to the free community gym a few minutes from my house. Its small, it sucks, but it works and its free. I won't have that when I move, so I'm looking for reviews on the big chain gyms. There are a few things I'm hoping for.. 1) not too pricey (duh)…

Bulking - 6 Week Detailed Progress Report
So, I'm halfway through my 12 Week Body Transformation Challenge and thought I'd give a progress report - complete with charts and all! I tend to be somewhat meticulous at times, so I've been tracking pretty much everything. I'll first give a summary, and post charts and notes below that. Starting Weight - 143 lbs Current…

But I don't want to eat another 800 calories.. :/
I'm on a 3500 calorie bulk phase, have been for the last month. I usually leave work with about 1500 calories remaining for the day. Today, I did even better, and only had about 1300 calories remaining. As I sat down to complete my MFP for the night, I realized that I only had one dinner tonight (vs my usual two).. Now its…

1500 Calories Short Yesterday.. Stuff Myself Today??
Due to some unexpected emergency happenings yesterday, I wasn't able to eat much. So, I missed my 3500 calorie goal by 1500 calories. What do you do in this situation? 1) Stuff yourself the next day (5,000 calories) 2) Spread it out over a week or so (4000 calories) 3) Just forget it and get back on the 3500 calorie track?

Lifting to Failure.. Do you?
Did some reading on lifting to failure - which I typically do. Do you lift to failure? Why or why not? Here's the rather lengthy (and technical) article dealing with the issue: http://www.weightrainer.net/training/failure.html And here's the summary of the article: "In my experience, how a trainee reacts to specific…

Gaining 2lb a week. Too much even with low BF%?
I'm a month into a my first ever serious "bulk". I'm 31, male and started at 142lbs. Yesterday, for the first time in many years, I hit 150lb "morning weight". So, that puts my gains at about 2lb/week. From what I typically read about "clean bulks", 2lb/week is a bit high. However, I've been tracking my BF% since week two.…

How are you doing YOUR bulk?
I'm a 31 year old male, currently at 145.5lbs. I'm doing the Shortcut to Size program from Jim Stoppani on Bodybuilding.com, so lifting 4 times a week. Cardio is limited to Tennis and Pickleball, 2-3 times a week each. My TDEE is calculated at just over 2500 calories, but I know from previous BMR tests that my metabolism…

What are your Macro % Goals?
I've been bulking for 3 solid weeks now, and keeping track of my calories/macros. My goal has been 3500 calories a day, with at least 1.5g/lb protein and I've gained about 5 lbs so far (I'm at 6% BF) After 3 weeks, this seems to be where my macros have leveled out. Thoughts? (31 yr, Male, 146lb) I'll also note that my…

How much do you lift? Males 130-160lbs
I have been working out on and off for a few years now. I tend to keep good records of my lift stats, but I don't know where I stand compared to others since I go to a small community gym and don't have anyone to compare myself to. So, how much are you lifting?? Here are my numbers: Male, 31 yo, 145lbs (all of these are…

Anyone using Jefit or any other tracking apps?
I started using Jefit to track my workouts about 6 months ago. Prior to that, I was using the Bodybuilding.com phone app but found it to be slow and clunky. Jefit has been awesome! There are a lot of user-made workouts, but I tend to make my own. While this can be tedious, it does allow me to create sets/reps and has a…

After years and years of being 140lbs, I'm finally making a serious effort to bulk up to 165. I set a caloric goal of 3500 calories, and after 9 days of tracking, my average is just over 3400. Lets hear your personal experiences. So that they are actually useful, please try to include the following info: Male/Female: Age (when bulking/gaining): Natural Body Type (Ecto, Endo, Meso): Starting/Ending Weight: How long did it take: Estimated BF % before and after: Program Used (the more detailed the better): Diet…

From what sources do you get your Fitness/Dieting info?
I have always been a scientifically minded person that is motivated by facts and numbers. As such, whenever I have a fitness/dieting question, I usually turn to actual research papers on the subject (I spend a lot of time on PubMet). Out of curiosity, where do you get most of your info? Here's my breakdown: Research Papers…

How much protein is too much?
I'm currently making my 2nd attempt at bulking up, following the Shortcut to Size program by Jim Stoppani, Phd. The program recommends a macronutrient ratio of 40/40/20 (Protein/Carb/Fat). With my caloric goal of 3500 calories a day, that equals about 330 grams of protein. Besides being difficult to actually get that much…

12 Week Body Transformation Challenge
I've always been a hard gainer. Part of that is an unusually high metabolism (RMR at age 25 = around 3500 calories. I'm 31 now so I assume its slowed down some). I've also been pretty physically active most of my life with a variety of activities. About 3 years ago, I finally got interested in actually working out. I…
