upcoming foot surgery and concerns about gaining weight
First of all, I've always been a planner. That said, I need to have some fairly extensive foot surgery which will hopefully, happen after the holidays. I'm one of those people that likes to be moving and gets antsy if I can't work out. The surgery will require me to be non weight bearing for 2.5 months and in a hard cast…

Weird question- muscles used while on crutches
Okay, I know this question is about as odd as it gets but here goes! I hope to have foot surgery mid January. The surgery will require me to be non weight bearing for approximately 2.5 months and then I graduate to some sort of walking cast. I'll be on crutches or a knee scooter for that time. Any suggestions on what types…

Breaking up with sugar?
For various reasons, I've decided that I would like to greatly reduce and even eliminate added sugar from my diet. I believe my biggest challenge will be the teaspoon of sugar I add to my hot tea each day. I've tried stevia but haven't really cared for the taste. Does the taste of stevia "grow" on you after a while? Has…

Polar Heart Rate monitor recommendations
I have an older Polar HRM that is older and I am ready to update. Does anyone use the M200 or the A370 models? I'd like to have one that will accurately measure my heart rate while working out, calories burned and maybe steps/and or distance walked. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks so much!!

Taming the sugar monster
I realize it's time for me to tame the sugar monster. The beast demands to be fed and it's wrecking havoc with my daily calories. Honestly, I think it's time to eliminate sugar for a while and let my body reset. Anyone else have success with this?

That look
I've been maintaining for a while but today while out for a walk, I got "the look." I was talking with another women who had been biking and stopped for a water break. We were talking about the surrounding trails and she mentioned that she was just getting back into biking and how difficult it was to get back into shape.…

Less weight to lose?
Is there anyone else out there who has a goal to lose 10 pounds or less? I'd love to do this journey with you! Incidentally, my husband and some of my in-laws are starting a weight loss challenge today. Although I joined them in the challenge, my husband warned me to lay low since my goal is to lose 7 pounds. Huh? Losing 7…

Anyone else wonder how did this happen?
I was cleaning out the closet and tried on some pants that fit just a few years ago. Very dismayed to find those same pants were no where close to fitting now! We moved across country two years ago, moving from one of the fittest states in the country to one of the most unfit. No doubt that was a big part of it but mainly,…

Plantar Fasciitis
Has anyone else dealt with Plantar Fasciitis? I've had bouts of it before but can't seem to get it to go away this time. Has anyone had any success with doing stretches for it? If so, what type of stretches worked for you? I've been putting ice on my foot several times a day but it's not getting better. I'm afraid I may…

MapMyFitness vs. Polar HRM calories
Which would be more accurate? When I ride outside, I wear my Polar HRM to see my heart rate but also use the MapMyFitness app to calculate mileage. I've noticed that my HRM can show I've burned around 100-200 calories more than the app. I do a lot of hills when I ride and I'm not sure the MapMyFitness app takes the…

You're getting too thin comments?
I wondering if anyone else has dealt with the issue of people saying you are too thin. I'm right smack in the middle of my BMI and have a few people tell me I have lost too much weight. Mind you, I know my arms look puny but the rest of me is fine!

Love this quote!
Our spin instructor told us today, "challenge brings change." Love this idea because if I'm just puttering around on the spin bike, I'll never see a change!

airlines charging by the pound?
I read yesterday that Samoa Airlines is planning to charge their passengers by weight rather than per seat to fly. Rates would be $1.25 per pound for domestic flights and and $2.27 for international flights. Really, I'm not making this up! Here's a link to the story…

Question for the ladies-thin forearms, anyone?
I've settled into a weight I am very comfortable with. I'm 5'3" and my weight varies from 127-130. Pretty much the middle of the BMI scale for me. Here's my issue-my wrists and forearms look a little too thin. Granted, this has always been the smallest part of my body but now I look more out of proportion. Anyone else have…

Just ONE taco?
Does anyone else get questions like this when they order? Two of the workers at Qdoba asked me if I was sure I wanted just one taco. I wanted to reply, Yes, I'm sure! I'm a petite 50 year old woman-my metabolism isn't so great any more! I don't NEED three tacos! There, I feel better now!

Leg exercise ideas? No squats or lunges allowed
I had arthoscopic surgery to remove a torn meniscus and also "clean up" some loose cartilidge due to arthritis. My doctor told me not to do squats, lunges, or leg extensions-ever again! :ohwell: Any ideas on other things to do to strengthen my legs and knees? I can do biking/spinning which will help but other ideas are…

I pulled out my yoga mat this evening and learned an important lesson. Do NOT put hand lotion on before practicing yoga! The yoga mat felt a lot like a Slip N Slide!:embarassed:

Out of balance body?
My upper body has always been thinner than my lower body. Now that I'm at a healthy goal weight, my arms look kind of skinny. My legs, however, do not! My hubby says my arms are too thin now and wants me to gain weight. Here's my question-would weight training add more bulk to my arms-especially forearms? I had…

Anyone tried to gain back a little after reaching goal?
I'm curious if anyone out there has reached goal and then decided they were a little too thin. Several people have told me not to lose any more (I wasn't planning on it) and my hubby thinks I'm a little too thin. He is overweight so maybe his perspective is different. It's hard to see yourself accurately! Anyone gain a…

How do people do it?
How in the world do people just sit around all day? I'm normally a fairly active person. Yesterday, I hurt my knee and have spent several hours today on the couch, icing it to reduce the swelling. I know some people spend hours each day watching tv. Not sure how they do it! I'm off to find a good book to read.

Odd question
This might seem strange but has anyone noticed their bones feel more noticeable now? When I do Pilates or yoga, my sitz bones and tailbone feels like it's right on the floor now! :ohwell: I know, weird question but I just had to ask!

spin class manners
I'm wondering if anyone has had this experience in a spin class. I got to the gym early, put a towel on my bike and then went to warm up on the elliptical. I came back into the room 15 min. before class was to begin and some guy was riding my bike. He had moved my towel and earplugs to another bike! And no, I don't think…

Anyone else have hypothyroidism?
I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism during the summer. When my doctor first put me on medication, I dropped a few pounds fairly easily. Guess what? Now it's not easy at all. In fact, I've gained a couple even though I'm working out. Has anyone else with hypothyroidism had success in losing weight? I'm guessing someone out…
