Open diary but private feed?
I've been using mfp for a while but am only just starting to get into the community. I see boards for adding friends and open diaries...but then when I go to a profile it says the feed is private. Am I doing something wrong? (I've sent a few friend requests too, but I've no idea if I did them correctly.) Thanks!

Doesn't feel like exercise?
I work partially from home as a writer, so I'm at my desk for hours at a time. I have a mini-elliptical that I use underneath my desk (this one here), just pedaling away while I work. I don't have an increased heart rate when I pedal, even for long periods; it's very light effort and not at all strenuous, but I am still…

ICK: protein bar fail
I usually buy the pure protein brand whenever I make it over to costo. This time I noticed that Kirkland also had a bar brand. Compared ingrediants and found them pretty promising (cashews, I love cashews). BIG mistake. Gluey, chalky awful mess. Couldn't even finish the one I started eating. Now I'm stuck with a bunch if…

Strength training-- how do you determine exercise calories?
I've seen a lot of posts about how strength teaching doesn't burn very much. I've also seen a lot of posts from people who do intensive bodyweight/lifting programs who are eating upwards of 2000+ calories a day to maintain. I'm still learning, and it can get confusing. I've done a mix of strength/cardio for some time. I've…

Sports bras WITHOUT padding!
I've been on the lookout for some good (and hopefully reasonably priced) sports bras. I used to be able to buy what I wanted at Target (the Champion brand, I think), but all the ones they sell now have padding in them. I'm small chested and don't want or need padding, especially for working out (not to mention it's a pain…

Bodyweight exercises work too!
Hello. This is my first time posting pictures, but wanted to share where I'm at. I know a lot of people stress the importance of lifting heavy, and that is a totally valid point of view, but I have a very hard going somewhere with the equipment I could use to lift heavy, and I live in quite a small space (studio…

Prone-to-bingeing buddies
I have a history of binge-eating, and have recently really been struggling with it. I was hoping to make some friends here that also have been having trouble staying on track lately. Hold each other accountable, keep each other in check? Thanks!

Making progress, don't want to lose it! But huge appetite increase?
I'm a 27 years old, 5'6" female. I fluctuate between 140-145, and want that to be more around 135-140, though my main focus is reducing body fat. Since I have so little to lose, I understand that there isn't a lot of wiggle room. I set MFP to go down by .5 lbs and was assigned 1,490 a day at a sedentary level of activity…

Waking up early to exercise
I work at a swim school, and new policy lets staff members swim in the facility before we open for lessons. So I'm planning to get up at 6:15am tomorrow to swim. I know for some people this would be easy, but while I do want to swim, I don't sleep well, so I'm dreading the early rising a bit. But I've set my alarm, I'm…

So I figured out my BMR...
...but now I'm not so sure what to do with it. Different calculators gave me an average of 1400cal bmr. Setting MFP to lose .5lb a week put me at 1490cal. So 90cal above my BMR. Is this reasonable? 5'6", female, range of 140-145 lbs, trying to get to a range of 135-140 lbs.

Low-fat/fat-free recipes. Please help!
I'm actually not asking for me. My mother is recovering from pancreatitis, and was given a medical diet of low-to-no fat for basically the rest of her life. She's pretty depressed about it, since she uses chicken fat in a lot of her cooking, snacks on nuts, loves to bake, etc. I figured asking around here for delicious…

Swim instructor?
I recently got a job teaching children (mostly babies) to swim. Because my students are so little (we do parent-tot classes) I'm not doing a lot of swimming per say, but I am in the water for 3.5 hours at a time, walking/swimming from child to child, or across the pool to get toys, etc. Normally I wouldn't bother logging…

Aerial! And other less common activities.
I had my usual hour and a half class on Saturday and my arms are still noodles (though it probably doesn't help that Sunday I went to an adventure park and spent two and a half hours climbing trees and doing obstacle courses). With only four students and two teachers, I was on an apparatus or doing conditioning training…

Weights v body-weight-only: help a rookie out?
Are exercises that use your own body weight for the resistance; push-ups, tricep dips, chin-ups, pull-ups, etc considered strength training too? I workout at home and make an effort to weight train with the dumbbells I own, but I also do intensity workouts with these body-weight exercises (sorry if there's a proper term…

Arm injuries are making exercise a problem
Most of my arm-workout is pretty basic. Push-ups, tricep dips, pull-ups, chin-ups, working with free weights, etc. Lately I've been getting this burning pain in my forearms. I take a break from arm work, it gets sort of better for a little while, and then the problem comes back again. Normal push-ups I don't have a problem…
