Started resistance exercising, now gaining weight..?? Help!
I am a 49 yr old male, and I have lost quite a bit of weight, mainly through diet and cardio (and MFP) over the past 6 or 7 months. However, as I approach my goal BMI of 25, my weight loss has slowed, and finally it stopped, about 6 weeks ago. About 3 weeks ago I added resistance exercising every other day -mostly body…

Running on a treadmill vs. open running - which is easier to
Hi. I'm not really a runner - but I did my first 5k this morning - albeit on a treadmill. I'm now wondering if this qualifies me for doing the same in "real life".... So, you runners out there, is the treadmill harder or easier then running in the real world? -Maury

HRM and calories... how can it be accurate?
I have heard often that an HRM is the best estimator of calorie burn. How can this be so? Aren't calories a measure of energy spent? If you (lift, run, whatever) a certain amount, you will have expended a certain amount of energy, therefore a certain amount of calories (some activities must take into account your body…

Protein after aerobic exercise - meaningful or not?
I know that one's supposed to consume protein directly after resistance exercise, to help repair muscle. What about aerobic exercise? Should one consume excess protein after running, or elliptical? Does it matter, as there's less muscle breakdown in aerobic exercise? Thanks for your input! -Maury

what is an "appropriate" amount of running (treadmill) per d
Hi, all. Yesterday, to my surprise, I did a 5k (on the treadmill). I had to push, but not to the point of exhaustion (still able to do 15 mins of elliptical and easy r-ball afterward). I guess I'm in better shape than I thought I was. My question is: What is a reasonable amount of running per day? If I could, should I do…

Exercise apps to compliment MFP - any recommendations?
Hi. I just started with "Multi Rep" (android, under $2), which is a simple app that implements the "200 sit-ups" approach to several exercises. Basically, prompts you to perform increasingly greater sets of a body-weight exercise, 3 days per week. A simple app, but exactly what I was looking for. Still needs some minor…

Are "Bodyweight" exercises considered "weight training"?
Wondering - are bodyweight exercises (push ups, pull ups, dips, squats etc) considered "weight training"? I ask because I have read that when weight training, you should only work out every other day, but cardio can be done every day. I am wondering which rule applies to bodyweight exercises. Any insight would be…

Subjectively, which seems harder to you?
I've been noticing that between elliptical, treadmill and rowing machine - perceptually speaking - the treadmill seems hardest, followed by the rowing machine, followed by the elliptical (and for me, easiest is racquetball) - for the same number of calories burned (and roughly the same durations) I find that different…

Timing of meals/snacks relative to exercise... does it make
Hiya. I'm wondering - is it really simply net calories, or does the timing of your food intake - relative to exercise - make a meaningful difference? (Or is that just a claim that supplement manufacturers make - eg "muscle milk" after working out?) I usually eat a high protein / low carb breakfast, then work out (mostly…

DOUBLE NSV!
I apologize in advance for my unabashed self congratulation, but... Two nice surprises for me, both are direct results from losing weight: 1: I won the YMCA racquetball tournament - BUT it was only the "C Class" (which the lowest category). I'm officially the best of the worst, certified mediocre. But now, I'll no longer…

No, really, I'm not a stickler about spelling. Really. But.
I'm not the best when it comes to spelling - but it drives me a little nuts when, on a sight about losing weight, people spell it "loosing" weight, or I have weight to "loose". There. I feel better now.

I just broke out of a 5 week plateau! Here's how!
Hi all. I'm posting this on the "Motivation" board, because I was starting to lose my motivation when I hit this hard plateau, less than 10 lbs from my goal weight. I hope that this might help some others who become discouraged when they hit a plateau. Since I started my weight loss regimen in November 2010 it had been…
