One-month daily exercise challenge
A fancy new gym has opened just a 1-min walk away from where I live. They have an introductory offer for £30 for 30 days membership. So I signed up, and am determined to have a one-month blitz to get my money's worth! Previously, I was running for 40 mins, twice a week. But I've shelved that while I take advantage of all…

I think I missed the Clean Eating memo...
I watched a few various healthy-eating/fit-lifestyle videos recently, presented by fitness/nutrition experts, and was genuinely surprised that my own healthy options are a no-go for these people. The advice on weight loss was stuff like 'steer clear of spaghetti bolognese, because it piles on the weight. Swap it for kale…

Ration Book Diet
I'm starting a challenge/diet next week for one week to see how I get on - the Ration Book diet. It isn't a commercial thing - just following what people could eat during the war, in the same quantities and weight loss/saving money should be a benefit. The quantities of food are really small compared with what I normally…

Psychology of Running
I love running. I enjoy it when I'm doing it, I feel smugly smug afterwards and for the rest of the day, it clears my head, I get fresh air, it's good for me and keeps me fit. So how come I have to mentally pep-talk myself into it every time, until I force myself out the door? Makes no sense.

Dry January
I'm trying an alcohol-free January this year for the first time, with the aim of losing weight and saving cash. So far so good, but I'm worried about Friday and Saturday nights....

What are your self-inspiration secrets?
I love this site for inspiration and hearing about other people's successes and pitfalls, but when I'm not online, I've got wee Jiminy-Cricket-style tricks to spur myself on. When I go into the supermarket, and there's a stand of family-size bags of Revels reduced to £1, in my head I always go 'More like 1lb' (fnar). Or…

Eating Back Exercise Calories
I'm never sure if this is a good idea. I do it.... but I'm unclear if I should. I don't tend to exercise and then eat more for the hell of it though. My routine is to build in extra runs to cover extra calories. So if I know I'll be having company in the evening involving beer or pizza etc, I get a run nailed before work…

Crisp-Free May!
Crisps are my most massive downfall. I can eat any amount, and they never come close to filling me up. It's like eating air. If there's a bag open, they get demolished, and I have no threshold for stopping - just when they're gone. I've come to the conclusion that if I can't have them in moderation, I just can't have them,…

Midnight Run -vs- Dawn Run
I'm trying to get back into running, and because I live in town, I always run at 6am so that a) nobody sees me and b) I'm not constantly stopping at traffic lights, over-taking shoppers etc. I'm thinking a midnight jog (or, you know, 10pm) would be good, but somehow running at night seems more dangerous than running first…
