The Consistency Thread
This is inspired by the consistency threads at some language learning forums I follow*. We have here, on MFP, the "number of days logged" counter which supports that - this thread tracks beyond that, something that also holds for any type of goals. Consistency is also important in fitness and weight management, so set a…

Slow metabolism maybe related to PCOS or Insulin Resistance
I just came across an article touching on the subject of Metabolism and PCOS. Apparently, the measured BMR was significantly lower in a group of women with PCOS (and further impacted by Insulin Resistance). full article not available for free - here is my abstract summary: Based on this, as a suggestion, I would recommend…

Hi
Well, looks like this is quite a small group. Just got over my first flare up. Not major - a few days on the big toe. I'm 47 and gout runs in my family - thought I had gotten away without it. Doing some minor diet adjustments and we'll see what I can do to repair what has clearly been building up for years. Good luck.

Article Review: Evidence-based Nutrition and Supplements
The abstract has been posted a few times on MFP but I thought it would be useful to look at the recommendations and the overall review article. While it is not original research Helms et al. published a good review of a set of limits and recommendations that should be of interest for someone losing weight and attempting a…

Guys: Are you a cucumber, a nacho, or a brick
We too can reduce ourselves to a fruit or something. Get it on guys! Me, I'm a Nacho that ate an Orange working on Yeti. (Oh, and that comes from the Daily Fail)

Cleanse - why you are lucky they don't work
Keeping it simple but I can reference or go into the details of any of these points: 1) Arsenic is the most common heavy metal poison which we can consume or breath. 2) Arsenic is metabolized in the liver by a process called methylation - the resulting metabolite is then cleared by the kidney and excreted in urine. 3) That…

Yogurt snobs unite! What your favorite?
Ok, I'm in America (ie the USA, let's not start that again) for the moment and have been eating Chobani day in day out. It's ok. But I pine for my rich, unctuous, super creamy European yogurts and fromage blanc. So off to the store to get everything in sight and do a taste test over the next days. First up, noosa. ("All…

Vegan Cleanse? Really MFP, disappointed.
Why is MFP promoting vegan detox smoothies in it's blog? This is disappointing. At least the link to import the recipe doesn't work.

Attractiveness and Weight - research & BMI
The image below shows research on "attractiveness" vs bmi for two different groups - self identified "fat admirers" and a control group. Research here: http://www.staff.ncl.ac.uk/m.j.tovee/Swami+Tovee-2009.pdf Whatever BMI you have, or intent to have as a goal weight, attractiveness isn't some absolute measure based on the…

+ 800 cals/day, almost no fat gain - CICO broken?
Looking at a recent study, from a review by Brad Schoenfeld - a study this year showed weight trained individuals that ate an excess of 800 cals per day in protein over 8 weeks gained little weight - and most of that gain was muscle. His blog post and review of the article is here:…

Warning - The TDEE or BMR calc you use might be wrong
A lot of online calculators use the Wikipedia page for Basal Metabolic Rate as a reference. The entry for the Katch McArdle equation was incorrect and previously proposed an equation and stated this was for BMR. Actually, the equation is for Resting Daily Energy Expenditure (RDEE) and not BMR. This can be correctly seen…

Low vs High Carb, Mindful Eating and Hawthorne Effect
A recent post over at Precision Nutrition covers the voyage of a low carber back to high carbs. I found it worth sharing because of it's non-dogmatic nature and who the author is... http://www.precisionnutrition.com/low-carb-convert In summary, a Dr Spencer, the director of examine.com (if you don't know that site, you…

Daily demotivation!
Easter is upon us, eat the chocolate eggs, there are more being made and its not like 100 cals is going to kill you. Well, at least not today. The couch is extra comfy today. Likely tomorrow, too.

The Truth About Rice Cakes
There is nothing wrong with them, in moderation. At 35 cals a pop, I can snack on two or three without the slightest issues and they do not affect my weight loss, health or nutrition in any way. 140 cals of carbs? Big deal, fuel for my run. The slight amount of sodium they have? Not an issue. Kidneys and homeostasis work…

My exercise "trap" and weight loss - a graph
I've been working on the last 10 lbs for a while and actually no longer care much as to when I will lose them - I am focusing more on composition, health and performance goals. But along the way, I moved away from being sedentary to being much more active - on a good week, I'm running, climbing or going to the gym 5 or 6…

Wasting food: daughter wants a spud gun.
I used to play with these as a kid and I was telling my daughter about a spud gun. I had one like this. Now my daughter wants one. I'm not too sure. I think that the idea of actively wasting food might not be the best. Thoughts?

Drinking soda and osteoporosis - all the acid!
TL;DR - Don't worry about the random cola, get your overall nutrition in. --- I'll post the studies mentioned at the bottom. Success is a Mindset
I had an interesting presentation by someone today and thought I'd share some of the thoughts that were expressed because they resonate particularly with me and this place. He proposed a list of ten points that he had found on the internet of characteristics of successful people – now, if you are like me, you dislike these…

dieter's edema, squishy fat, wooshes and what nots
Question concering what is commonly called, dieter's edema, adipose tissue edema, or the fluidity of adipose tissue. I've seen Lyle McDonald and Brad Pillon talking about this. But even Lyle recgonized that after many years of researching about in the literature, he's pretty uncertain that it exists.…

How moderation works
Are you aware that the primary reason that moderation appears inconsistent is that the moderators only look at posts that are reported? Not every post is screened. So what might appear as a violation won't get dealt with until someone complains or is so egregious that the mods act directly. It's the community that is the…

Any non-specific success stories?
I'm looking for success stories that aren't specific to a social group, gender, race, species, age, nationality, language group, parental status or quantum state. Truly, are there any threads out there that gave a success story of someone that will create an all inclusive common ground for every man, woman, chinchilla and…

Does your culture or background affect your health?
The genetic overlap with cultural identifiers, social structures and your family history probably impact significantly some of the baseline elements of health. This isn't to say you are not master of your destiny but, yes, Virginia, the place you come from, the food you eat are often tied to cultural and social roots.…
